  • Patent number: 6379740
Abstract: A prosthesis having an apertured structure is located in a chamber (11) which is taken to sub-atmospheric pressure. Once sub-atmospheric pressure has been reached, a liquid, optionally containing pharmacological agents, is introduced into the chamber. Drawn by the sub-atmospheric pressure, the liquid saturates the apertured structure of the prosthesis. In this way, the invention eliminates the risk of air being trapped in the apertured structure that could give rise to the formation of blood clots after implantation of the prosthesis. The liquid can contain drugs that penetrate the prosthesis, performing their therapeutic action locally and over time after implantation.

  • Patent number: 6228437
Abstract: The present invention is a process for modifying the properties of a porous freeform fabricated part by increasing its density and reducing its porosity. The porosity and density of a freeform fabricated part are altered by packing the pores in a freeform part with an infiltrant, such as a preceramic polymer. The process includes drawing a vacuum on or pressurizing the freeform part while it is in an infiltrant bath, thereby forcing the infiltrant into the pores of the freeform part. After removing the densified freeform part from the infiltrant bath, the freeform part is subjected to a treating process, such that the infiltrant within the pores transforms to a ceramic or ceramic-containing phase to thereby increasing the density of the freeform part.

Abstract: A thermal barrier coating for superalloy turbine engine vanes and blades that are exposed to high temperature gas is disclosed. The coating includes a ceramic layer applied to an aluminide or MCrAlY bond coat by electron beam physical vapor deposition. The ceramic layer has a first portion having unstabilized porosity, a second portion, overlying the first portion, with stabilized porosity, and an outer portion wherein the pores are coated with a noble metal. The stabilized porosity portion along with the noble metal coating reduce the thermal conductivity of the ceramic layer. Stabilizing the porosity renders it more resistant to sintering densification at high temperatures.

  • Patent number: 5506017
Abstract: This patent teaches a new method of roughening the surface of a magnetic recording medium in order to reduce the stiction and friction between a recording head and the medium to thereby improve mechanical reliability. During this method, the medium substrate is heated to form second phase precipitates which result in roughening of the medium surface. The medium roughness can be controlled by proper selection of the heating temperature and time and the substrate alloy. This results in improved contact-start-stop (CSS) performance of the medium. The method of the present invention allows for lower costs and potentially higher throughput than conventional texturing processes.
