Abstract: An isothermal, low pressure-based process of depositing material within a substrate has been developed and results in creating an extremely narrow reaction zone within which a more uniform and efficient deposition will occur. Sets of isothermal plasma operating conditions have been found that create a narrow deposition zone, assuring that the deposited material is clear glass rather than soot particles. The chemical delivery system, in one arrangement, utilizes rods of solid phase source material (which may otherwise be difficult to obtain in gaseous form). The operating conditions are selected such that the hot plasma does not transfer a substantial amount of heat to the substrate tube, where the presence of such heat has been found to result in vaporizing the reactant material (creating soot) and developing hot spots.

Abstract: A photo-reactive composition layer is formed on a support with transparency while the support is moved in one direction. Then the support is reversed in a first irradiating chamber as to be moved in a direction opposite to the one direction to generate a serpentine transport path. The support prior to reverse and the support subsequent to reverse face to each other serpentinely, and the support is irradiated with light from lamps for ultraviolet-ray emission. The entire photo-reactive composition layer on the serpentine support is photo-polymerized while the light transmits through the support and the photo-reactive composition layer formed on the support. Then photo-polymerization reaction of the photo-reactive composition layer is facilitated in a second irradiating chamber, adjacent to the first irradiating chamber, using lamps for ultraviolet-ray emission different from those used in the first irradiating chamber in property.

Abstract: Aspects relate to patterned nanostructures having a feature size not including film thickness of below 5 microns. The patterned nanostructures are made up of nanoparticles having an average particle size of less than 100 nm. A nanoparticle composition, which, in some cases, includes a binder material, is applied to a substrate. A patterned mold used in concert with electromagnetic radiation function to manipulate the nanoparticle composition in forming the patterned nanostructure. In some embodiments, the patterned mold nanoimprints a suitable pattern on to the nanoparticle composition and the composition is cured through UV or thermal energy. Three-dimensional patterned nanostructures may be formed. A number of patterned nanostructure layers may be prepared and suitably joined together. In some cases, a patterned nanostructure may be formed as a layer that is releasable from the substrate upon which it is initially formed.

Abstract: An antioxidant combined with UHMWPE prior to subjecting the UHMWPE to crosslinking irradiation. In one exemplary embodiment, the antioxidant is tocopherol. After the antioxidant is combined with the UHMWPE, the resulting blend may be formed into slabs, bar stock, and/or incorporated into a substrate, such as a metal, for example. The resulting product may then be subjected to crosslinking irradiation. In one exemplary embodiment, the UHMWPE blend is preheated prior to subjecting the same to crosslinking irradiation. Once irradiated, the UHMWPE blended product may be machined, packaged, and sterilized in accordance with conventional techniques.

Abstract: Methods of making titania coatings having self cleaning properties, and associated articles are provided. In certain example instances, a substrate supports a layer comprising titanium dioxide. The substrate may support multiple layers. In certain examples, the titanium dioxide layer is made using a process involving a titania precursor and a photomonomer. The titanium dioxide coating may be applied as a liquid directly or indirectly on a substrate, then permitted to cure. After curing using ultraviolet radiation and/or electron beams, the resulting coating may inhibit fouling, be antireflective, be highly durable, self cleaning and/or hydrophilic in certain instances.
