Abstract: Nanostructured materials, devices having nanostructured materials, and methods for preparing nanostructured materials are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the method includes infiltrating a soft template with a chemical precursor and subsequently heat treating the infiltrated template to produce a nanostructured material. The soft template can be a patterned soft template, where the pattern is created in a soft template precursor and defined by the user to place structural features at specified locations. In some embodiments, nanostructured materials can be ferroic nanostructures, including ferroelectric and ferromagnetic nanomaterials, having a user defined pattern and favorable structural characteristics, including defined aspect ratios, wall thicknesses, and other dimensions.

Abstract: Break away panels, devices and methods of using the breakaway panels with grid scored patterns for fire extinguisher cabinets which can be made for small, mid-size and large size fire extinguisher cabinets, and easily resized when needed. Three novel panels each having novel vertical and horizontal scored lines running throughout the panels and be located on the inside surface of the installed panels. An installer can easily break off upper and/or lower and/or side edges of the panels in order to resize the panel to fit almost any size fire extinguisher cabinet. The scoring lines can be accomplished by a router. Alternatively, the entire panel and the scored lines can be formed from injection molding.

Abstract: A fluid dynamic structure includes a surface and a microstructure mounted on the surface. The microstructure is defined by a plurality of peaks and valleys (i.e., riblets) and includes a transition region in which each peak and valley changes from a first profile to a second profile along a chord length of the structure. The peaks and/or valleys may have a variable dimension along the length of the microstructure. The peaks and valleys can be non-linear along the chord length and have a smooth transition from the first profile to the second profile. The different profiles of the microstructure are optimized to reduce noise generated by turbulent fluid flow across the structure.

Abstract: A process for continuous production of profile components of fiber composite material by a forming chain system, an associated profile component and the chain system for its continuous production. The method draws on the forming chain system having at least one forming chain. Here, preform batch of fiber strands, impregnated with matrix material and/or woven fiber webs, knit webs or nonwoven webs, are brought to the system at the working run of the at least one forming chain and are guided through the forming chain system, forming a continuous profile containing the profile component with a variable cross section over the profile length and/or with a profile longitudinal axis with virtually any desired extent. Abstract: A shaped photosensitive glass composition comprising silica, K2O, Na2O, Ag2O, B2O3, Al2O3, Li2O, and CeO2 with a high anisotropic-etch ratio formed by a novel construction method. Furthermore, such shaped glass structures can be used to form a negative mold for casting the shape in other materials. Structures of the photosensitive glass composition may include micro-channels, micro-optics, microposts, or arrays of hollow micro-needles.
Abstract: The invention relates to a preformed sheet comprising at least two mono-layers, each mono-layer containing a fibrous network with fibers having a tensile strength of at least about 1.2 GPa and a tensile modulus of at least 40 GPa and a binder, and a separating film on at least one of its outer surfaces, characterized in that the separating film has an areal density of between 1 and 5 g/m2. With this preformed sheet assemblies and articles offering a substantially higher ballistic protection level at a certain weight can be obtained. The invention further relates to an assembly of at least two such sheets and to a flexible ballistic-resistant article comprising said assembly.

Abstract: A transparent laminate film which has visible light transmittance, sunlight blocking properties, radio wave transmittance and good appearance is provided. A transparent laminate film includes a laminate structure formed on at least one side of a transparent polymer film, in which a metal oxide layer and a metal layer are laminated, the metal oxide layer containing an organic component, wherein grooves having a width of 30 ?m or less are formed in the laminate structure, and an overall surface resistance is 150 ?/? or more. Preferably, the grooves are numerous cracks, or are formed by laser processing. Further, preferably, the transparent polymer film has an easy adhesion layer formed on at least one side thereof, and the laminate structure is formed on top of the easy adhesion layer. Furthermore, preferably, the metal oxide layer containing the organic component is formed by a sol-gel method using optical energy during sol-gel curing.

An illustrative embodiment of the metal/composite joint includes a metallic component, a composite component provided in engagement with the metallic component, an engagement region defining contact between the metallic component and the composite component and a plurality of attachment projections joining the metallic component and the composite component. The attachment projections may be non-uniformly distributed along the engagement region. A method of joining a metallic component and a composite component is also included.
Abstract: New routes involving multi-step reversible photo-chemical reactions using two-step techniques to provide non-linear resist for lithography are described in this disclosure. They may provide exposure quadratically dependant on the intensity of the light. Several specific examples, including but not limited to using nanocrystals, are also described. Combined with double patterning, these approaches may create sub-diffraction limit feature density.

Abstract: This invention relates generally to articles, devices, and methods for controlling the impingement behavior of molten metal/ceramic droplets on surfaces in industrial processes. The texture of a substrate surface is engineered such that impinging molten metal droplets actually bounce off the surface. Likewise, the texture of a substrate surface can be engineered such that impinging molten metal droplets stick to the surface.
Abstract: A method of forming thermoforming sheets includes providing a molten polymer source. The method further includes providing a first and second roller, the second roller having a first and second section, the first section having a first diameter and the second section having a second diameter. The method further includes feeding molten polymer from the molten polymer source into a nip between the first and second roller. Abstract: In a plate-shaped fluorescent member configured to convert the wavelength of the light emitted by a semiconductor light emitting element, the fluorescent member is formed of an inorganic material having a refractive index of 1.5 or more and a light transmittance at the emission peak wavelength of the semiconductor light emitting element of less than 20%. A concave portion is formed, of the surfaces of the fluorescent member, on the surface on the side where the light in the semiconductor light emitting element is mainly emitted. In the fluorescent member, the light transmittance of the light having a wavelength of 380 nm to 500 nm may be less than 20%. The concave portion may be a groove. The concave portion may be a plurality of holes that are scattered.
Abstract: The manual nailing process can injure the person's hand gripping the nail when the nail head is missed. The underlying surface of the work (the object being nailed, made of wood or other relevant materials) can be damaged when the hammer hits the work surface instead of the nail or from the hammer claws when the nail is extracted. The nailing aid described in this application holds the nail when it is being started, away from the person's hand. This aid also provides protection for a broad area of the underlying work surface around the nail, when the nail is being struck or extracted. The striking surface of the aid is sloped to prevent it from being trapped by a bent nail or a nail head. The handle of this aid also serves as a holder for an optional nail set or pencil.

Abstract: A glass substrate is held by a glass substrate holding member in the vertical direction, and a nozzle is used to eject an infrared cutoff liquid onto the upper portion of the glass substrate. The infrared cutoff liquid flows vertically downward so as to be applied onto the glass substrate. The film thickness of the lower portion of an infrared cutoff film is greater than that of the upper portion. The glass substrate is dried for approximately five minutes at room temperature. Then, the glass substrate onto which the infrared cutoff liquid has been applied is placed in an oven preheated to 200° C., heated for ten minutes, and then cooled. The glass substrate having the infrared cutoff film thereon is installed in a railroad vehicle such that the lower portion of the glass substrate is located on the lower side with respect to the railroad vehicle.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a patterned layer of compressive stress on a glass substrate includes forming a mask having predetermined pattern on a surface of the glass substrate. The pattern includes a plurality of hollow area and a shelter area The glass substrate is tempered by a chemical tempering process to form a layer retaining compressive stress on the uncovered area of the glass substrate surface so that the patterned layer of compressive stress is formed on the surface of the glass substrate. The patterned layer is formed to at least one surface of the glass substrate. The patterned layer has a plurality of area retaining different surface compressive stress. The patterned layer includes high stress areas separated by a low stress area. Abstract: A packaging film with a main film made of a stretchable polymer film material and having a multiplicity of holes. Abstract: A stack of a hard mask layer, a soft mask layer, and a photoresist is formed on a substrate. The photoresist is patterned to include at least one opening. The pattern is transferred into the soft mask layer by an anisotropic etch, which forms a carbon-rich polymer that includes more carbon than fluorine. The carbon-rich polymer can be formed by employing a fluorohydrocarbon-containing plasma generated with fluorohydrocarbon molecules including more hydrogen than fluorine. The carbon-rich polymer coats the sidewalls of the soft mask layer, and prevents widening of the pattern transferred into the soft mask. The photoresist is subsequently removed, and the pattern in the soft mask layer is transferred into the hard mask layer. Sidewalls of the hard mask layer are coated with the carbon-rich polymer to prevent widening of the pattern transferred into the hard mask.

Abstract: A welded assembly characterized by improved structural integrity includes a first component disposed along a first plane. Abstract: A mold for molding an injection molded article comprises a mold cavity with a non-symmetrical portion. At least one flow leader in the non-symmetrical portion of the cavity may produce a symmetrical flow boundary in a multilayer flow downstream of the non-symmetrical portion of the mold cavity. The at least one flow leader may be a variable thickness flow leader. The multilayer flow comprising an inner layer, an outer layer, and an interior layer. Co-injection molding apparatus and methods that may use the foregoing mold are disclosed. Similarly, co-injection molded articles and containers that may result from the foregoing mold, apparatus, and methods are disclosed.
Abstract: An electronic grade glass substrate is provided with a recess, channel or step in one surface, and a first chamfer between the side surface of the recess, channel or step and the one surface. The side and bottom surfaces of the recess, channel or step are mirror finished, and the first chamfer is mirror finished.
Abstract: Provided are methods of preparing a plurality of extrusions, comprising (a) shrinking a transparent first thermoplastic material comprising a plurality of non-transparent marks, (b) lithographically transferring the pattern of the shrunk non-transparent marks to a layer of photoresist deposited on a second thermoplastic material, and (c) shrinking the second thermoplastic material, thereby generating a plurality of extrusions on the shrunk second thermoplastic material.
