  • Patent number: 10544610
Abstract: A hinged component includes first and second portions of material coupled together by a composite live hinge. The live hinge includes a layer of tensile fabric and a layer of elastomer interposed between the tensile fabric and the material of one or both of the coupled first and second portions. The composite live hinge is capable of joining structural composite materials without the need for scoring, and thereby weakening, the structural composite material along the desired hinge line. The live hinge can be embedded in the materials it joins in a method that is compatible with traditional structural composite layup processes and in a manner which prevents resin from the structural composite materials from infiltrating the tensile fabric and compromising its flexibility.

Abstract: The invention is directed to a patterned aerogel-based layer that serves as a mold for at least part of a microelectromechanical feature. The density of an aerogel is less than that of typical materials used in MEMS fabrication, such as poly-silicon, silicon oxide, single-crystal silicon, metals, metal alloys, and the like. Therefore, one may form structural features in an aerogel-based layer at rates significantly higher than the rates at which structural features can be formed in denser materials. The panel includes a first outer layer having a first outer surface, a second outer layer having a second outer surface and a core positioned between the outer layers and having a large number of cavities. The outer layers are bonded to the core by press molding. Crushed portions of the panel having a reduced thickness form the pattern of depressions at the second outer surface of the second outer layer. The stiffening supports are bonded or joined to the second outer layer within the pattern of depressions. The stiffening supports are sized, shaped and arranged within the pattern of depressions to provide the panel with strength to resist deflection from a load at various positions and orientations at the first outer surface.

Abstract: A unitary structural assembly including a first component having a plateau-receiving aperture and a compression-molded, composite second component having a sandwich structure is provided. The second component includes a first outer layer, a second outer layer, and a core positioned between the outer layers and having a large number of cavities. The outer layers are bonded to the core by a press molding. A portion of the second component including the first layer and the core defines a raised plateau having upper and side surfaces. The plateau has a size and shape corresponding to the size and shape of the plateau-receiving aperture. A height of the plateau corresponds to the depth of the plateau-receiving aperture. The plateau is inserted into the plateau-receiving aperture so that corresponding surfaces of the plateau and the plateau-receiving aperture are in abutting engagement to unitarily connect the components and form the assembly.

Abstract: A layered insulation system comprising one or more layers. A variety of types of layers can be used in conjunction with one another to deliver a range of desired Low-E and/or Low-U insulation properties and/or venting choices. Some types of layers can be foam layers with foam that inhibits heat conjunction interspersed with microparticles and/or nanoparticles that reflect, scatter, abate, and/or negate infrared radiation (IR) wavelengths, including dampening “Ideal Model Matrix” vibrations to inhibit heat flux through an IR opaque system. Other layers can be Low-E layers, Low-U layers, primarily empty layers, and/or other types of layers.

Abstract: A process for producing airfoil components containing ceramic-based materials and having a tip cap. The process entails forming an airfoil portion of the component from an airfoil portion material that contains a precursor of a ceramic-based material. The airfoil portion material defines concave and convex walls of the airfoil portion, and the concave and convex walls define a tip region of the airfoil portion and at least one cavity within the airfoil portion. At least a first ply is formed that contains a precursor of a ceramic-based material, and the first ply at least partially closes the cavity at the tip region of the airfoil portion. The airfoil portion material and the first ply are then cured so that the first ply forms a tip cap that closes the cavity and the precursors of the airfoil portion material and first ply are converted to the ceramic-based materials thereof.
