Abstract: Structures and methods for hindering molded part deformation during densification are discussed. Such devices and techniques can help alleviate stresses that tend to result in part deformation during firing, sintering, or other densification processes, and thus reduce the need for secondary straightening operations post-densification. In some instances, a support structure is utilized to orient a molded greenbody in a preferred direction to reduce deformation during firing (e.g., orienting a thin tail section is a plane parallel to the direction of gravity). The support structure can also be part of, or the entirety of, a thermal mass to help alleviate stresses that lead to part deformation. Though such structures and methods can be used for any molded piece, it can be particularly used to create a portion, or an entirety of, a medical device such as a jaw of an surgical instrument.

Abstract: An improved electrical connector for use with a glazing is disclosed. The glazing preferably comprises a ply of glazing material having a first electrically conductive component mounted thereon, and a second electrically conductive component, joined to the first by a lead-free solder. The second component has a thickness t and comprises first and second connector feet linked by a bridge portion, the bridge portion being at a height h above each of the connector feet. T and/or h are chosen to minimise the occurrence of stress faults in the glass in the region of the solder. Preferably, the glazing is an automotive glazing.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a morphing cellular structure. The morphing cellular structure comprises a group of unit cells with each unit cell configured to have a cellular geometry. The group unit cells are formed of an active material, where the active material has both a first state and a second state. The active material is responsive to an actuation signal such that when the actuation signal is actuated, the active material is deformed from the first state to the second state, thereby changing the volume of each unit cell affected by the actuation of the actuation signal and morphing the cellular structure. Furthermore, both a passive material and at least one additional active material can be attached with the active material, allowing a user to selectively change the shape of the cellular structure.

Abstract: A method for gluing and brazing a honeycomb structure includes at least one partially structured foil with a pitch and a wave height. The method includes the steps of choosing a mean brazing material diameter of a powder brazing material, said diameter being 15% smaller than the height of the wave; determining a minimum thickness of the glue strip according to equation; gluing at least partially structured foil within the width of the glue strip on at least part of the wave crests formed by the undulation; brazing the honeycomb structure. The invention also relates to a corresponding honeycomb structure that ensures satisfactory joint connections even when said structure is used in the exhaust systems of automobiles.

Abstract: In a method of making a hybrid structure, at least one support body is fixed in a tube component which is then placed in an injection molding tool. An injection-molded part is injection-molded to an outer surface of the tube component in an area of the support body. As a result, the tube component is inwardly deformed, when regions adjacent to the support body are exposed to an injection pressure, and forms indentations for engagement of the injection-molded part.

  • Patent number: 7473475
Abstract: A welded joint between two metal members in which the weld must support a structural load. The abutting faces of the welded members have step portions formed therein, in which the step portions extend beyond the surface of the adjoining welded members. The outer step portion of one member extends beyond an inner step portion of the adjacent member, and a weld is applied on abutting faces of the members and the step portions. The welded joint of this invention is intended to be used for two adjacent rotor discs in a gas turbine engine. But, the weld arrangement of this invention can be used for welding two pipes together, or two adjacent plate members. The weld arrangement of this invention provides for reduced stress distribution along the weld line that acts to increase part life.

Abstract: A surface treatment process for a substrate is provided. There are a plurality of first conductive patterns on a top surface of the substrate and a plurality of second conductive patterns on a bottom surface of the substrate and a plurality of inner circuits electrically connected with the first conductive patterns and the second conductive patterns. The process includes the following steps. First, a conductive layer is formed on the second conductive patterns. Next, an insulating layer is formed on the conductive layer. After the insulating layer is formed, an anti-oxidizing layer is electroplated on the first conductive patterns using the conductive layer. Next, the insulating layer and the conductive layer are removed in sequence. The surface treatment process of the present invention has the advantage of low fabrication cost and does not need a plating bar to perform the electroplating process or a photolithographic process.

These active cellular metals (or other materials) are composites consisting of conventional metal/alloy truss structures (or other material structures) in combination with shape memory metal/alloy components (or other material components) and offer high specific strength and stiffness, but which are also deployable energy absorbers or self-healing smart structures.

Abstract: Various structures or components can include plated surfaces or other parts. For example, an article can include a base and a plated part with a limit artifact that results from plating adjacent a non-plateable surface; the limit artifact can be disposed away from the base. Exemplary limit artifacts include lack of protrusions, smooth upper surfaces, and curved surfaces, where a curved surface can transition between a smooth upper surface and an irregular side surface. Exemplary plated structures can be tube-shaped or cup-shaped, with an opening at a top end and, around the opening, a lip with a limit artifact. Wall-like structures can similarly have limit artifacts at their top end. If plating on a mold's side surface, the non-plateable surface can be the lower surface of an overhanging polymer disk or structure positioned on the mold. Plated tubes and wall-like structures can be employed in microfluidic structures.
