    Abstract: A circular power connector that can accommodate plugs of varying diameters includes a plurality of electrical terminals that include a contact beam extending from and monolithic with base, where the contact beam includes a contact portion, and a mounting portion that extends from and monolithic with a base for mounting the terminal to a substrate. The terminals are cylindrically arranged to receive a plug. Alternatively, each electrical terminal includes a frame portion, a first contact beam extending from the frame in a first direction, and a second contact beam extending from the frame in a second direction. Multiple electrical terminals are oriented so that the first and second contact beams for one terminal extend at an angle, preferably perpendicular, to the first and second contact beams of another electrical terminal, in a still further embodiment, an electrical terminal having two halves is provided.

The beams are aligned on the plane defining the strip in parallel with ends extending away from the strip edges in opposing directions. Means are provided for deforming the strip within the housing prior to effecting desired interconnections whereby the beams are pre-buckled. Upon urging contacts into proximity with the beam ends, the buckling force is released causing each beam's ends to be urged away from the strip into engagement with respective contacts, thereby effecting desired interconnection between contacts and through one or more beams.

Each housing half includes a plurality of parallel spaced apart contact guides defining contact receptacles therebetween. Each housing half further includes a longitudinally extending contact retaining wall adjacent the top of the housing half and defining a portion of each contact receptacle. Each terminal includes a central mounting portion, a solder tail at one end and a contact beam at the other end. The contact beam is of a double bent configuration to provide anti-overstress protection to the terminals in use. The terminals are heat staked into the respective receptacles such that the end of the each contact beam is biased against the contact retaining wall. The substantially identical housing halves with the terminals heat staked therein are hermaphroditically mated and are heat staked together.
