  • Patent number: 7622184
Abstract: A stack of 50 layers of a first pitch-base carbon fiber sheet is formed, two sets of stack each having two second pitch-base carbon fiber sheets stacked therein are fabricated. At this time, the second carbon fiber sheets have a thermal expansion coefficient larger than that of the first carbon fiber sheet. Next, the stack of the first carbon fiber sheet is then held between two sets of stack of the second carbon fiber sheets. The stack of the first and second carbon fiber sheets are then impregnated with an epoxy-base resin composition and the resin is solidified. As a result a prepreg composed of the first and second carbon fiber sheets and the resin component composed of the epoxy-base resin composition is obtained. Thereafter, interconnections and the like are then formed on the prepreg, to thereby complete a multilevel interconnection board.

  • Publication number: 20040219855
Abstract: Materials and methods are provided for producing preform materials for impact-resistant composite materials suitable for liquid molding. An interlayer comprising a spunbonded, spunlaced, or mesh fabric is introduced between non-crimped layers of unidirectional reinforcing fibers to produce a preform for use in liquid-molding processes to produce composite materials. Interlayer material remains as a separate phase from matrix resin after infusion, and curing of the preform provides increased impact resistance by increasing the amount of energy required to propagate localized fractures due to impact. Constructions having the interlayer materials melt-bonded to the reinforcing fibers demonstrate improved mechanical preformance through improved fiber alignment compared to other fabrication and preforming methods.

  • Patent number: 6759352
Abstract: A composite carbon fiber material is formed of one or more layers of carbon fiber material in which the carbon fibers are aligned all in the same direction and a mat of nonwoven, woven, or off-axis unidirectional carbon fibers are laminated together. Layers may be used individually or as a hybrid. The layers can be preimpregnated or impregnated during processing using thermoplastic or thermosetting resins. A layer of thermoplastic resin is applied either over the surface or within the composite structure, and the resin permeates the material so as to provide a more stable mechanical structure once the resin is processed. The material combines good mechanical strength with improved electrical current carrying properties when compared with the aligned carbon fiber layer alone. The layering sequence, layer type, and resin type can be specified to tailor electrical properties, mechanical properties, durability, and wear resistance.
