Abstract: A machining installation for workpieces comprises a workpiece positioning device comprising a workpiece holder pivot unit as well as a tool positioning device comprising a tool holder pivot unit. The workpiece holder pivot unit is designed such that a workpiece holder is pivotable about at least three and no more than four workpiece holder pivot axes. Moreover, the tool holder pivot unit is designed such that a tool holder is pivotable about no more than two tool holder pivot axes. The machining installation has a simple design and ensures flexible and accurate machining of workpieces.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention comprise a machine adapted for polishing work pieces such as large silicon wafers. A wafer polishing machine in accord with the invention comprises a rotatable platen in a table base, above which is mounted a lid having a head moving assembly with four synchronously rotatable head assemblies. A motor and linkage connected to the head moving assembly imparts reciprocating linear motion to the head assemblies in a selected direction in a plane parallel to an upper surface of the platen. Embodiments of the invention produce a complex relative motion between a surface of a wafer to be polished and the platen. The complex relative motion, resulting from a combination of motions including rotation of the platen, rotation of the head assemblies, and translation of the head moving assembly, improves a uniformity of polish and a rate of polishing compared to wafer polishing machines known in the art.

Abstract: A centering device (13) is arranged to surround a loading table (11) on which a lens blank (1) is to be set, to set the geometric center of the lens blank (1) to coincide with the center of the loading table (11). The centering device (13) includes three clamp pins (31) which press the peripheral surface of the lens blank (1). When centering is ended, the loading table (11) on which the lens blank (1) is set is pushed up by a moving device (12) from a centering position (H1) to a block position (H2), and a peripheral portion of the lens blank (1) on a concave surface side is urged against the lower surfaces of locking portions (31A) of clamp pins (31). After a predetermined amount of wax (4) is dripped onto the lens blank (1), a lens holding unit (2) is moved downward by a predetermined amount and urged against the wax on the lens blank (1) to spread the wax thin and let the wax to solidify. Thus, the lens blank (1) and lens holding unit (2) are bonded to each other.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for grinding a cutting tool, especially a knife. The aim of the invention is to provide a method which allows configuration of individual leaf or blade geometries at comparatively low costs. For this purpose, the cutting tool is contacted with the effective surface of a grinding device, and the cutting tool and the grinding device can be displaced in relation to each other by at least three degrees of freedom.
Abstract: An attitude control device and a precision machining apparatus capable of accurately controlling the attitude of an object mounted on the attitude control device according to grinding stages. The attitude control device is constituted by a first flat-plate member 21 and a second flat-plate member 22 disposed in parallel with the first flat-plate while being spaced apart from the same by a distance L. A spherical member 3 is interposed between the first and second flat-plate members 21, 22 while fitting its portions in recesses 21a, 22a respectively formed in the first and second flat-plate members 21, 22. A first actuator 4a expandable in a Z-axis direction perpendicular to a plane defined by an X-axis and a Y-axis is interposed between the flat-plate members. Second actuators 4b, 4b expandable in a suitable direction in the plane defined by the X-axis and the Y-axis are connected to the second flat-plate member 22.
Abstract: A reciprocal blade lapping machine (20) is taught that is used for sharpening cutting and shearing blades. The lapping machine consists a convex lap plate (32) mounted on an enclosure (22) rotated by an electric motor (34) connected to a speed reducer (36). A lapping compound distribution system is positioned directly above the lap plate and disperses lapping compound (64) onto the convex upper surface (48) of the lap plate providing an abrasive media for removing parent material from a set of blades placed on the lap plate. A conditioning ring (66), including dead weigh within, is rotatably disposed on the lap plate impacting directly upon the rotating lap plate maintaining the convex contour. A pair of reciprocating work piece holders (74) slideably rest on the lap plate, and alternately slide work pieces (76) backward and forward in a straight line on the rotating lap plate upper surface.

Abstract: An apparatus for lapping a workpiece including a plurality of magnetic heads supported by a tool is disclosed. The lapping apparatus comprises a rotary-lapping table having an abrasive surface, and a lapping device assembly provided so as to be movable with respect to the abrasive surface of the lapping table. The lapping device assembly includes a device provided at a lower portion of the lapping device assembly for supporting the tool and a device for respectively applying predetermined loads to a plurality of load applying portions of the tool. The load applying portions of the tool is disposed along the longitudinal direction of the tool. The load-applying device applies the loads from a plurality of different directions to at least one of the load applying portions of the tool so that the tool is deformed into a predetermined shape.
Abstract: A concave optical fiber ferrule holding plate for polishing an end face of an optical fiber is disclosed. The holding plate may be used alone for hand polishing or be provided as a component of an optical fiber polishing machine. The circular holding plate comprises a concave interior with one or more concentric wear rings disposed radially inwardly on said interior from the outer periphery of the holding plate to a point surrounding the optical fiber ferrule located in the center. The holding plate contacts a polishing material only at the peripheral wear ring thereby reducing contamination from the material of the holding plate which reduces contamination of the end face of the fiber during polishing. The degree of deterioration of the wear rings can be easily observed to determine when the ferrule holding plate must be replaced.

Abstract: A grinding guide assembly for grinding or sharpening the carbide surface of a snowmobile wear bar. The grinding guide assembly features a pair of angle adjusters and a support guide that slide together back and forth across a pair of substantially parallel rods. The angle at which the wear bar contacts the grinding surface may be selected while the wear bar is securely clamped to the support guide. The length of the rods may be any desired length to allow the grinding guide assembly the capability to grind or sharpen an object of any length.
Abstract: An improved chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) device for chemically and mechanically planarizing the surface of a semiconductor wafer includes a flat wafer stage for loading and affixation of the semiconductor wafer so that the surface of a material to be polished, i.e. the surface of the wafer, faces up, and a cylindrical polishing pad formed above the exposed surface of the wafer to be polished which is rotatable at high speed so that the contact point of the wafer and the pad moves linearly. The stage is constructed to support a wafer by a vacuum suction through vacuum holes. The cylindrical polishing pad has a rotating axis for transmitting rotation at the center, thereof, and a double layer polishing pad having different hardness on a peripheral surface of the rotating axis.

Abstract: A holding fixture for a wheel and tire assembly enabling a single person to perform an operation on the tire such as grooving or the like. The fixture comprises a first U-shaped bracket having a base for mounting on a wall or other vertical surface and legs extending perpendicularly from the vertical surface. A second similar U-shaped bracket has a vertical base and horizontal legs adjustably bolted to the legs of the first bracket. The vertical base of the second bracket supports a horizontally extending support tube. A rotatable tube segment has a wheel mounting plate for a wheel and tire assembly affixed to one of its ends and a slotted positioning ring affixed to its other end. The tube segment and its slotted ring and mounting plate are captively and rotatively mounted on the support tube so that a tire and wheel assembly affixed to the mounting plate is rotatable about the support tube. A lock assembly is affixed to the support tube and the base of the second bracket.
Abstract: A hand-held ice skate blade sharpener tool is provided which includes a configuration for honing, concurrently, the hollow groove and the side walls of an ice skate blade, to dress the edges of the blade in situ, at any convenient time. The tool has a guide to accept the blade's hollow surface and its edges, and to align same with the honing surfaces of the tool. An extruded housing of plastic or like material surrounds the honing surfaces and is of a shape to provide a grasping surface while protecting the hand from the sharp edges of the skate blade. The entire assembly is relatively light weight and relatively small, thereby rendering the device reasonably inexpensive to manufacture. The tool is intended to be disposable.
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for polishing the end face of an optical fiber encapsulated within a ferrule portion of a fiber optic connector device which terminates the optical fiber. The end of the optical fiber projects from the ferrule portion. A mounting plate has a forward surface and a receptacle for mounting the connector device, with the end of the optical fiber projecting from the forward surface, to permit the end face to be polished by moving the mounting plate over an appropriate polishing surface. A polishing plate forms a substrate having a recess in a forward surface thereof. A polishing film is adhered to the substrate, spanning the recess, to define an air space beneath the film in the recess.
