Abstract: The present invention provides a human-machine interface where control is achieved without the use of buttons. By providing multiple knobs, the audio system maximizes functionality while minimizing cost and space requirements. Each knob is capable of two selection modes: a first selection mode provided by rotating the knob and a second selection mode provided by depressing the knob. The two selection modes correspond to ergonomic selection pairs for controlling the audio system. The reduced area required for controls allows for a larger display area; which provides the user with a more attractive display that can convey more information. When a change in a status, through knob manipulation is sensed by the audio system, the display automatically provides a menu that corresponds to the ergonomic pair assigned to that knob. The automated switching of menus minimizes navigation between screens, while providing full manipulation of that audio system function using a single knob control.

  • Patent number: 6567978
Abstract: A display interface device and method for determining a currently tuned-to channel of a set-top converter box having an electronic display that indicates the currently tuned-to channel via seven-segment display elements in response to drive signals provided thereto by the set-top converter device. The display interface device includes an electrical connection to the electronic display and a controller. The controller receives the drive signals over the electrical connection and generates information representative of the currently tuned-to tuned channel for use by downstream components. The information representative of the tuned channel may be output as an ASCII value representative of the currently tuned-to channel. The display interface may be part of a viewership metering system when used in conjunction with a viewership collection meter to determine viewer habits.

Abstract: A method according to the present invention provides a wireless system service reseller (22) with the capability of connecting a subscriber station (14) to a service provider system (16, 24) that offers the most advantageous service to the subscriber station (14) out of all service provider system choices. Initially, the service reseller (22) receives a service request from the subscriber station (14). It then evaluates available service provider systems (16, 24) to determine a most advantageous service provider system for the subscriber station (14) based on the received service request. After it evaluates the available service provider systems (16, 24), it instructs the subscriber station (14) to initiate communication using the most advantageous service provider system as determined based on its evaluation of available service provider systems (16, 24).

  • Patent number: 6539210
Abstract: Broadcast signals are detected and matched with signal information, such as call letters, genre and geographical location for corresponding signal sources, based on the geographical location of the receiver and the frequency at which the signals are broadcast. The signal information is stored with signal and medium selection data, so that signal sources provided via different communication media, such as broadcast radio and Internet streaming audio, can be accessed, sorted, selected and displayed together. Thus, a user can group for display information about signal sources transmitting a type of music that the user enjoys, via any communication medium that the receiver supports. Also, a currently selected signal source and communication medium can be matched with a different communication medium for the same source, so that if the received signal deteriorates, the receiver can switch to the different communication medium for receipt of the same signal.

Abstract: A received signal is subjected to an orthogonal demodulation in orthogonal demodulating section 102, the signal undergone orthogonal demodulation is converted into digital signal in A/D converting sections 103a and 103b, that digital signal is then despread in despreading sections 104a and 104b, the frequency error which is used as an output is calculated by adding the frequency error of the despread signal in frequency error calculating section 105 for a set number-of-times, the frequency control value is updated in frequency control value updating section based on the calculated frequency error, the reference frequency signal corresponding to the updated frequency control value is outputted by voltage control oscillator 107.

Abstract: The present invention is a computer-based radio scanner internet system, with home base user computers with radio scanner hardware and software, a host server computer, a plurality of remotely located antenna computers connected to antennas, and an internet system. The user computer also has conventional operating hardware and software, a sound system, a monitor, a keyboard or mouse, as well as disc drive, CD Rom drive. The radio scanner hardware contained within the user computer includes a radio receiver and frequency changer with a scanner range having at least some frequencies in the range of 25 MHz to 1,300 MHz. The antenna computers are available via the internet connection for connecting to user computers to offer remote scanning of even an intercontinental nature, e.g., a user in Boston can, through this system, use his computer-based scanner to scan frequencies in, for example, Los Angeles. Local scanning is also available using the foregoing user computers with their own antennas.

Abstract: A method and a system for a radio listener or a television viewer to retrieve a stored broadcast segment, such a song title or a sound recording, upon receiving a transmitted broadcast segment. In one embodiment, a computer-implemented method and system facilitates retrieving a stored broadcast segment associated with a transmitted broadcast segment in response to a user inquiry, wherein the user inquiry references a time and a date of a broadcast and a station identifier of the transmitted broadcast segment. The user initiates the inquiry upon receiving the transmitted broadcast segment that interests the user. The method includes configuring a broadcast segment database with a plurality of stored broadcast segments associated with respective broadcast times, broadcast dates, station identifiers and identification information.

Abstract: An Enhanced Radio Data System for commercial radio broadcasters comprises a subcarrier modulated for transmitting data impressed on the broadcaster's main carrier frequency. The subcarrier data protocol constitutes an enhancement over existing protocols constructed for this purpose by providing the capability for broadcasters to identify themselves both by their program format as well as by the announcements they carry, and by providing the capability for broadcasters to convey more detailed information in a process with greater inherent intelligence. Such intelligence enables: data typing without separately transmitting the definition of the data types; data compression specific to each type of data; and data formatting and presentation based on the specific characteristics of the data types without the need to separately transmit data formatting and presentation instructions.
