  • Patent number: 8942327
Abstract: The present invention employs hierarchical modulation to simultaneously transmit information on different modulation layers using a carrier RF signal. Initially, first data to be transmitted is assigned to a first modulation layer and second data is assigned to a second modulation layer. In one embodiment of the present invention, the first and second data are assigned based on reliability criteria. The first and second modulation layers are hierarchical modulation layers of the carrier RF signal. Once assigned, the first data is transmitted using the first modulation layer of the carrier RF signal and the second data is transmitted using the second modulation layer of the carrier RF signal. In one embodiment of the present invention, information may be transmitted to one end user using one modulation layer, and information may be transmitted to a different end user using a different modulation layer.

Abstract: In a mobile communications network, drifts in timing of user equipment in soft handover may be accounted for by measuring the offset between the current timing of the user equipment and the first significant path of downlink frames from cells of the active set at first and second instances. Differences in the respective offsets from the first and second instances may be calculated to determine if the drift is unidirectional in time for all cells of the active set. A unidirectional drift in the offsets is indicative of a drift in timing of the user equipment, allowing the current timing to be momentarily unfrozen and updated.

Abstract: Method for optimizing the delay spread performance of a radio receiver (200) includes evaluating (306) a delay spread environment to determine if a desired RF signal is being received under conditions of low delay spread or high delay spread. If a low delay spread condition, the baseband digital data signal is filtered using a narrow filter (310). Otherwise, the signal is filtered using a wide bandwidth filter (312) having a bandwidth wider than the narrow filter. The center frequency of the wide bandwidth filter is selectively shifted (316, 320) in accordance with a predetermined frequency offset if a second received power level of an interfering signal in an adjacent channel exceeds the first received power level by a predetermined threshold amount. This frequency shift of the filter allows for improved delay spread performance while minimizing any performance degradation when an interfering signal is present on an adjacent channel.

Abstract: Synchronized broadcast transmits a same broadcast content using a same waveform from multiple transmitters. Transmitters each apply a same spreading code for broadcast transmissions. In a spread-spectrum communication system having a time division multiplexed forward link, a synchronized broadcast transmission is inserted into a broadcast slot. One embodiment employs an Orthogonal Frequency Divisional Multiplex (OFDM) waveform for the synchronized broadcast. An OFDM receiver is then used to process the received synchronized broadcast transmission. An alternate embodiment implements a broadcast Pseudo-random Noise (PN) code for use by multiple transmitters. An equalizer is then employed to estimate the synchronized broadcast transmission.

  • Patent number: 8543174
Abstract: A mobile device sends to a message a wireless network. The message indicates a plurality of different protocol types of broadcast messages to be processed as broadcast-to-unicast messages during a low power mode of operation of the mobile device. The protocol type of a given broadcast message is identifiable in a protocol identifier field of the broadcast message. The mobile device maintains its wireless receiver in a powered down state during the low power mode of operation while broadcast messages are broadcasted from the wireless network. For each broadcast message of each said indicated protocol type provided in the message sent to the wireless network, the mobile device monitors to receive via the wireless receiver a unicast message from the wireless network. The mobile device identifies broadcast message information of the broadcast message within the unicast message.

  • Patent number: 8526985
Abstract: An application server in a communication network receives a plurality of data streams from a plurality of mobile stations that include a client for the application server. The data streams may be video, audio or a combination thereof and include an indicator of originating location of the data stream. A subset of the plurality of data streams that originates from an area are determined. The first set may also be determined based on a tag that is included in each of the data streams of the first set, the tag indicating a sharing status for a respective data stream and/or a subject of the respective data stream. A first data stream of the first subset transmitted to a service subscriber having an interest preference corresponding to the tag of first set data streams. The transmitted first data stream may include overlay content associated with the service provider.
