  • Patent number: 7065376
Abstract: An invention is disclosed whereby a wireless network node, equipped with two or more radio transceivers statically tuned to non-interfering frequency channels, can make decisions regarding which channel to use when communicating with a neighboring wireless node. A multi-radio unification protocol implemented in a wireless node coordinates the use of multiple wireless network interface cards and provides a virtual layer that hides the multiple physical network interfaces from higher layers of a node's network protocol stack. The invention is applicable to wireless networks generally, including those in which some nodes do not have multiple radios or do not recognize the multi-radio unification protocol. The invention makes possible simultaneous transmissions using available channels, thereby reducing interference and delay while increasing the overall capacity of the network.

  • Patent number: 6970712
Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for buffering and replaying a segment of a voice or data transmission. A connection is established between two end nodes in the network. At an intermediate node in the network between the end nodes, a predetermined segment of the data is maintained in a memory as a buffer. Upon receiving a request from one of the end nodes to replay the segment, that segment is replayed and transmitted to the requesting node. The request may be made by a user at one of the end nodes, or may be made automatically after detecting corrupt data. Because the buffering module is in the network, it need not be incorporated in premises or mobile equipment. Because the buffering module is remote from the requesting end node, the replayed data does not contain errors introduced in the original data between the buffering module and the requesting end node.

Abstract: A sleep control system and method are provided that permit a reference clock and the direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) modem in a mobile station receiver to be turned off and turned back on at arbitrary points in time while still maintaining accurate base station system time. Accurate timing is made possible through a number of techniques including precise initial calibration using a rising edge/falling edge averaging system, determining the sleep clock and reference clock frequencies, and the determination of the frequency drift of the sleep clock that occurred during the previous sleep interval.

  • Patent number: 6529738
Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintaining a record of radio signal strength for a plurality of channels in a wireless communication system is provided. A detector detects radio signal strength on each channel, and a memory stores information relating to the detected signal strengths. The information is stored in the form of a value for each channel. Each value is stored in an array and values are stored in the array such that each position in the array is assigned to a particular channel. The use of an array allows stored values to be associated with respective channels by the position that the value is held in.

Abstract: A communications terminal, such as a wireless mobile terminal, is supplied with an indication of group call characteristics for incoming group calls so as to distinguish such calls from other types of incoming calls. A Group Call Server in charge of the group call may selectively augment the calling party number field of the paging message with one or more indicator “flag characters,” indicating one or more characteristics of the group call, such as call type, call subtype, or priority level. The communications terminal receives the group call paging message and selects the appropriate response to the paging message based on the flag characters. The communications terminal preferably examines the calling party field of the paging message and notes the presence of the flag characters. When the flag characters are present, the communications terminal parses out the flag characters and calling party ID.

Abstract: A system and method capture data from an SS7 network and pair each invoke message with its corresponding response message. Each message is stored in a daily file as well as in a table dedicated for that particular message type. A separate file is also maintained on each MIN and holds the most current registration information for each MIN. The system and method support four different types of queries: a MIN/ESN query, an active roamer query, a switch-to-switch query, and a transaction statistics query. The MIN/ESN query provides roaming activity on a specific MIN or ESN while the active roamer query provides information on all roamers in a serving market. The switch-to-switch query reveals messaging at one switch or between two switches. The statistics query provides data to a provider on all of its subscribers roaming in foreign networks or on all phones within its own network. The system has a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for displaying information on each message in an easy and convenient manner.

Abstract: Apparatus and a method for establishing a cellular mobile call. If no radio traffic (voice or data) channels are available for a calling Mobile Station (MS), then a test is made to determine the expected wait time before a channel becomes available. If the expected wait time is less than a first threshold, then the call request is queued. If a channel does not become available before a second time threshold, then the caller is notified that the call has been queued and is expected to be established in a short time. A control message is sent to the MS to trigger an indication of the queued status to the user. The indication may be one or more tones, a data display, or the playing of a pre-recorded announcement. If the expected wait time is more than the first threshold, the caller is given the opportunity to be called back when a radio channel becomes available. Advantageously, the number of failed calls because of unavailable traffic channels is reduced, and the caller's annoyance level is reduced.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing a wireless telephone connection when a call cannot be made immediately. The caller and the wireless system negotiate for a later time when another attempt will be made to establish the call. Shortly before that time arrives, the wireless system reserves a radio channel and retains that channel for the deferred call. Then, the system calls the customer back, or waits for the customer to attempt the call. A reserved channel is then used for the call if the system has been successful in reserving such a channel. Advantageously, there is a high probability that the deferred call will have a radio channel available.

Abstract: A method for re-selecting control channels in a mobile station reduces the use of resources by limiting an evaluation of candidate control channels to those channels which satisfy certain criteria and are deemed to be eligible control channels. As a consequence, resources are not spent on attempting to re-select a control channel that is not compatible with the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6484037
Abstract: A method of establishing a group call in a wireless communications system includes a group call server supplying mobile terminals of a certain type with an indication of call type, and optionally other information, for group calls so as to distinguish such calls from other types of calls. The group call server in charge of the group call may selectively augment the calling party number field of the outgoing paging message with one or more indicator flags when the targeted mobile terminal is adapted to receive and act upon such information. The indicator flags indicate one or more characteristics of the group call, such as call type, call subtype, or priority level. One flag may indicate priority level and another may indicate the call subtype of the group call. The mobile terminals receiving the augmented paging message base their response, such as to auto-answer or not, on the group call characteristics indicated in the paging message.

Abstract: A wireless communication network uses multiple timers to selectively free communication resources dedicated to supporting a packet data connection with a wireless access terminal. If the connection remains inactive for longer than a first time-out period, the network releases a portion of the RF resources dedicated to the connection, thereby making these resources available for supporting other connections. If the connection remains inactive for longer than a second time-out period, the network releases the remaining RF resources, as well as releasing other communication resources in the network dedicated to supporting the connection. By avoiding call tear down until expiration of the second time-out period, the network maximizes availability of its RF resources, without significantly increasing call signaling overhead as would happen with repeated premature tear down of the connection.

Abstract: A data processing system comprising a plurality of processors each storing an instance of replicated data, the system comprising a master processor having a master memory. The master processor maintains a stored data instance in the master memory, updating the stored data instance in response to receive request messages, requesting said master processor to transmit a broadcast message to other processors. The request message contains an update of a data item updated at one of a plurality of local processors. On receipt of the request message, the master processor updates the corresponding data item in the master memory, and broadcasts the updated data item over a communications medium, eg a common bus linking all the processors, so that each local processor may update its own instance of stored data stored on the corresponding respective local memory.

  • Patent number: 6405036
Abstract: A method of compiling transmitter-to-receiver relationships in a radio system is disclosed. The radio system includes at least two receivers (B48, B42) and at least one transmitter (MS1) located in at least one radio coverage area (C42) of the receivers (B42). The method for a single transmitter (MS1) includes the steps of: first, sending a signal (ARM) having known power (Put) on a transmission channel allocated to the transmitter (MS1). Next, in at least one of the receivers (B48, B42), the power received (S48, S42) from the transmitted signal (2, ACCESS) is measured. The transmitted signal is guaranteed to be a solitary signal upon reception. The amplification (g{circumflex over ( )}48, g{circumflex over ( )}42) of the signal (ARM) received in the receiver is then calculated. Finally, the calculated amplification (g{circumflex over ( )}48, g{circumflex over ( )}42) is stored in a storage location in the radio system.
