    Abstract: Adhesive, preferably pressure sensitive adhesive, is applied to an article f manufacture, such as the closure flap of an envelope or paper bag in such a way that the adhesive is protected against activation prior to closing the article. For this purpose, the adhesive is first applied to a continuous web or tape of a carrier material that either has an inherent anti-stick characteristic or is provided with an anti-stick surface coating relative to the adhesive to be applied. Preferably, the adhesive does not cover the entire surface of the carrier strip, but rather covers only areas in the form of stripes extending at least partly across the width of the carrier web. The adhesive stripes are spaced from one another and preferably also from at least one edge of the carrier web or tape. The carrier web is then severed into strips, each provided with one adhesive stripe and these strips with the adhesive stripes thereon are then secured between two rollers to the surface area to be provided with the adhesive.

    Abstract: An envelope construction for high speed printing includes a front panel having a flap with a sealing adhesive strip on its back side, and a rear panel secured to the front panel at its marginal edges to form a pocket. The thickness of the adhesive strip is substantially the same as the thickness of the rear panel so that when the flap is opened, the overall configuration of the envelope is flat to facilitate stacking and feeding. The combination of the strip and the rear panel are both secured to the back side of the front panel, and the combination adds a layer of a uniform thickness to provide the desired flat aspect. Like such envelope constructions are arranged in a stack within a paper tray. The topmost one of the envelope constructions is separated from the stack seriatim at high speeds to feed them individually to the printer for printing thereon.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing an improved bag for the cultivation of mushroom spawn is provided. The bags have continuous gas permeable sealing strips sealed to the inside walls of the bags which cover openings in the bag, so as to allow the bag to be vented without loss of moisture. The openings and sealing strips are positioned close to the top and bottom of the bag so as to maximize air flow through the mushroom spawn without creating dry spots, thereby improving spawn yield. The apparatus includes rollers for dispensing plastic film and at least one continuous hydrophobic strip of material. A series of apertures are punched by cutting dies in the film, and a vacuum system removes the cut out portions. The strip of material is positioned over the apertures and sealed by sealing dies over them, so as to enclose the apertures. A cutting dies cuts off the film and strips. A conventional bag making machine then forms the bags.

A buckle or insert folder can be used to fold the forms, and they are then fed to a first pressure sealing module. A 90.degree. transfer conveyor conveys the forms from the first pressure sealing module to a second module, and from the second module they are removed by a discharge conveyor.

When an envelope enters the seal folder flap trap, a photocell detects and triggers one counter of a dual counter system. A first counter increments each time an envelope enters the trap, until a count termed "preset 1" is reached. When "preset 1" is reached by the first counter, the glue applicator is deactivated. A second counter is then incremented.
