  • Patent number: 7425191
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for forming a score line with a reverse kiss cut in a deformable material are provided. A method can include providing two plates, such as a die plate with a scoring rule thereon and a counter plate with an aligned corresponding recess with a knife edge positioned therein and protruding toward the scoring rule. When the die plate is advanced toward the counter plate, the deformable material is forced into the recess of the counter plate to form the score line and the knife simultaneously forms a cut or slit in the bottom surface of the deformable material to form a reverse kiss cut.

  • Publication number: 20080105396
Abstract: An arcuate die board formed as a multi-layered paperboard structure. The die board is initially produced as a full cylindrical paperboard tube, which is subsequently cut lengthwise to form two or more part-cylindrical portions each of which is used to fabricate a die board. The die board is then cut to form the slots in its outer surface for mounting die tools. The multi-layered paperboard tube can be spirally wound, convolutely wound, or formed by a linear draw process. The part-cylindrical wall is formed predominantly, substantially entirely, or entirely of paperboard plies adhesively laminated together.

  • Patent number: 7361131
Abstract: A system includes a first scoring station, an optional second scoring station, and a cutting station. The first scoring station includes a stationary platen for supporting a substrate, a movable platen juxtaposed a spaced distance therefrom, and one or more scoring rules operatively associated with the platen and movable between a substrate non-contact position and a substrate contact position by the platen. The scoring rules may be independently movable in a selective manner for creating score lines at selective locations along the substrate when the platen moves the scoring rules into the substrate contact position. The scoring rules may be configured with scoring blades having selectively adjustable lengths and locations. The scoring rules may be constructed of a plurality of scoring segments that form the scoring blade. Each scoring segment is selectively movable between a scoring position and a non-scoring position for creating customizable score line lengths and locations.

Abstract: A method of forming a box-like acoustical substrate is provided. Portions of an acoustical substrate having a decorative surface are compressed to form a flange, a first compressed region, a second compressed region, and a third compressed region. First, second, central, and third uncompressed regions are positioned respectively adjacent to the compressed regions. A left first surface and a right first surface of the acoustical substrate may be folded toward the back surface of the substrate until the second compressed region and the third compressed regions are flush with the central uncompressed region. An outer portion of the left surface may then be folded towards the back surface until the flange is flush with the right edge. The acoustical product may be used as an acoustical trap or duct. • Patent number: 7156287
Abstract: The present invention provides a container with an integrated spout and a method for forming the container. The container includes an inner panel that defines a spout and an outer panel that defines an orifice. The width of the spout exceeds the width of the orifice. The outer panel may include a first tab adjacent to the orifice to provide access to the spout. The outer panel may also include a second tab that temporarily occludes the orifice. The orifice may be exposed when the spout on the inner panel is accessed and the second tab is at least partially detached by extracting the spout. An integrated spout on the inner panel, the width of which exceeds the width of the orifice on the outer panel, reduces the cycle time and cost of manufacturing containers with a spout and prevents the container contents from bypassing the spout upon pouring.

  • Publication number: 20040214704
Abstract: Bliss-type boxes made by combining containerboard body blanks with end panel or box liner blanks. The invention is a Bliss box former in direct association with a slitter/scorer. The slitter/scorer is supplied with containerboard sheets having a width which is equal to the length of the box liner blanks. The sheets have a length which is equal to a whole number multiple of the width of the box liner blanks. No waste is created. Box liners are severed and scored for delivery as needed by the Bliss box former. By combining the slitter/scorer with the Bliss former the need for maintaining multiple sizes of box liner blanks in inventory is reduced and setup when boxes are being made that differ only in width is greatly simplified.

Abstract: A method box for making a sturdy and light-tight box and a box thereof in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention includes providing a sheet of material with a first pair of opposing edges and a second pair of opposing edges. The sheet of material is grooved to form first and second pairs of grooves. Each of the first pair of grooves is spaced from one of the first pair of edges to form a first pair of sides and each of the second pair of grooves is spaced from one of the second pair of edges to form a second pair of sides. Next, the first and second pairs of sides are folded up along the first and second pair of grooves and then are secured together to form the box.

  • Patent number: 5941809
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of producing a protective device that is adapted for use with a container in order to inhibit ingress of unwanted materials through a handhold opening in a wall of the container. The method includes a first step of advancing a first strip of material in a longitudinal direction from an upstream location to a downstream location. As this first strip of material is advanced, it is longitudinally scored after which a second strip of material is secured to the first strip of material such that the second strip is sealed around a discrete consecutive portion of the scoring. Thereafter, an adhesive material is applied to a side surface of the first strip opposite the second strip. The joined first and second strips are then cut into individual units with portions of the first and second strips in each unit being sealed completely around the periphery thereof.

  • Patent number: 5904643
Abstract: A process and apparatus for forming three-dimensional containers from a continuous flat web of paper, coated paper, paper board, or laminated paper board ("paper") in which the paper is first scored to define the shape of the container and, thereafter, the scored stock is simultaneously cut and formed into a container. Containers so produced have improved uniformity. The apparatus is less expensive and easier to operate than conventional equipment, and it is easier to change from one style of tray to another. The apparatus also makes possible tray styles which could not be made with machines which cut and transfer paper blanks to a separate forming station.

  • Patent number: 5855543
Abstract: A kit for making boxes from paper card stock. The kit has a flat plate with a guide rail with a vertical edge projecting above the surface of the plate parallel to one edge of the plate. A scoring groove traverses the plate parallel to the vertical edge of the guide rail. One or more spacing strips, each having a vertical edge, may be placed between the vertical edge of the guide rail and the scoring groove to vary the depth of the box. The overall size or "footprint" of a box made in accordance with the invention is determined by the distance of the scoring groove from the nearest vertical edge and the size of the blank card stock employed. Two identical sized card stocks are used for each box. A slightly wider spacing strip is used to form the top than the spacing strip used to form the bottom of the box. This also makes the depth of the box bottom slightly greater than the box top.

  • Patent number: 5599267
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for making display boxes having windows made of substantially rigid plastic material. The boxes comprise substantially rigid opaque material, such as paperboard, in combination with substantially rigid plastic material. The substantially rigid plastic material includes at least one fold line or groove which cooperates with a fold line in the opaque material when the box is set up. The present invention provides a method and apparatus for making such boxes from a supply of sheets of the opaque material and a supply of sheets of the plastic material. The method comprises the steps of supplying a sheet of opaque material with an opening, positioning a supplied sheet of plastic material into juxtaposition with the sheet of opaque material to cover the opening, adhering the plastic material to the opaque material, and forming groove lines in the plastic and opaque sheets to permit folding of the sheets along aligned groove lines.

The flap is opened by depressing a disengaging tab formed in another panel of the carton. Fifty-percent cuts through the carton panels are used to separate the flaps from the panels.
