A catalyst for the stereospecific polymerization of propylene and other .alpha.-olefins is composed of: (A) the solid component of catalyst; (B) an aluminium trialkyl or aluminium alkyl halide; and (C) an electron donor compound, capable of forming a complex compound with component (B).

The solid catalyst component, Component (A), comprises Component (i) which is a solid catalyst component for a Ziegler-type catalyst comprising Ti, Mg and a halogen; Component (ii) which is a silicon compound represented by a formulaR.sup.1 R.sup.2.sub.3-n Si(OR.sup.3).sub.nwherein R.sup.1 indicates a branched hydrocarbyl group, R.sup.2 which may be the same as or different from R.sup.1 indicates a hydrocarbyl group, R.sup.3 which may be the same as or different from R.sup.1 and/or R.sup.2 indicates a hydrocarbyl group, and n is a number satisfying an equation 1.ltoreq.n.ltoreq.3;Component (iii) a halogen compound of S or P; and Component (iv) an organometal compound of a metal of Groups I to IV of the Periodic Table.

The catalyst is prepared by (i) treating the preactivated support with at least one electron donor compound containing labile hydrogen, (ii) treating the resulting activated support with at least one ester of an aromatic acid, (iii) impregnating the treated support with titanium tetrachloride and (iv) after washing the impregnated catalyst activating it with titanium tetrachloride.
