Abstract: A method of extracting residual pesticides from livestock meat fat and a kit to be used therefor. Namely, a method of extracting residual pesticides comprising; (1) a step of homogenizing livestock meat fat, which is a solidified state, in the presence of water and then separating the fat, (2) a step of treating the thus treated fat with a dehydrating agent, and (3) a step of dissolving the dehydrated fat in a solvent in which fat is soluble, re-dissolving the pesticides in a hydrophilic solvent and then concentrating the solution of the hydrophilic solvent to give a liquid sample for measuring the residual pesticides. A kit to be used in the above-described method. Use of the above method and kit makes it possible to simplify the procedure while achieving an effect of reducing the amount of impurities (an organic acid, etc) extracted.

Abstract: Using zeolites as the active adsorbent, adsorbent laminates have been fabricated with various sheet supports. These adsorbent laminates have been successfully operated for oxygen enrichment at high PSA cycle frequencies, such as upwards of at least 150 cycles per minute. Methods for making suitable adsorbent laminates are described. The methods generally involve forming a slurry comprising a liquid suspending agent, an adsorbent and a binder. Laminates are made by applying the slurry to support material or admixing support material with the slurry. The slurry can be applied to support material using a variety of techniques, including roll coaters, split roll coaters, electrophoretic deposition, etc. One method for making laminates by mixing support material with the adsorbent slurry comprises depositing the slurry onto a foraminous wire, draining the slurry material, and pressing the material to form a ceramic adsorbent paper. Spacers can be formed on adsorbent laminates to space one laminate from another.

Abstract: An insert for sports gear and footwear has a compliant casing formed of fabric sheeting that incorporates regions of fused or otherwise integral regions of activated carbon. A desiccant such as silica gel in the form of spheroidal beads or other granules is loosely enclosed inside of the casing. The activated carbon has an affinity for odor-causing constituents such as organic compounds, and extracts airborne odor-causing constituents as air enters the casing. Inside the casing, the desiccant extracts airborne water vapor. The two-stage removal of odor-causing constituents and water vapor rapidly and effectively extracts moisture and odors. The silica gel and activated carbon are porous and have high surface areas available for adsorption, whereby the insert is adapted to maintain moisture and odors at low levels during long-term storage.

A new method is provided for making these sorbents that involves treating substrates with an amine and/or an ether so that the amine and/or ether comprise at least 50 wt. percent of the sorbent. The sorbent acts by capturing compounds contained in gaseous fluids via chemisorption and/or physisorption between the unit layers of the substrate's lattice where the polar amine liquids and solids and/or polar ether liquids and solids are located. The method eliminates the need for high surface area supports and polymeric materials for the preparation of CO2 capture systems, and provides sorbents with absorption capabilities that are independent of the sorbents' surface areas. Abstract: Solid materials have been developed to remove contaminating metals and organic compounds from aqueous media. The contaminants are removed by passing the aqueous phase through the solid materials which can be in molded, granular, or powder form. The solid materials adsorb the metals and the organics leaving a purified aqueous stream. The materials are sol-gel and or sol-gel and granulated activated carbon (GAC) mixtures. The species-specific adsorption occurs through specific chemical modifications of the solids tailored towards the contaminant(s). The contaminated solid materials can then be disposed of or the contaminant can be removed and the solids recycled.

  • Patent number: 6528441
Abstract: A hydrogen storage composition based on a metal hydride dispersed in an aerogel prepared by a sol-gel process. The starting material for the aerogel is an organometallic compound, including the alkoxysilanes, organometals of the form M(OR)x and MOxRy, where R is an alkyl group of the form CnH2n+1, M is an oxide-forming metal, n, x, and y are integers, and y is two less than the valence of M. A sol is prepared by combining the starting material, alcohol, water, and an acid. The sol is conditioned to the proper viscosity and a hydride in the form of a fine powder is added. The mixture is polymerized and dried under supercritical conditions. The final product is a composition having a hydride uniformly dispersed throughout an inert, stable and highly porous matrix. It is capable of absorbing up to 30 moles of hydrogen per kilogram at room temperature and pressure, rapidly and reversibly. Hydrogen absorbed by the composition can be readily be recovered by heat or evacuation.

Abstract: A novel compound which can be used in the field of separation and purification of gases is disclosed. The compound can be incorporated into a silica gel incorporating polyazacycloalkane structural units for separating a predetermined gas from a mixture of gases. The mixture of gases is brought into contact with a metallated hybrid gel under conditions which make possible the absorption of the gas to be separated, followed by a phase of desorption of the attached gas, and the recovery of the gas.

Abstract: Methods for the sol-gel preparation of porous inorganic solids having highly uniform metal or metal oxide clusters embedded therein are provided. The porous solids are prepared by incorporating a metal ion-dendrimer complex into a gel and thermally decomposing the dendrimer to produce the solid. The invention further provides for novel inorganic solids exhibiting highly uniform porosity with metal or metal oxide clusters embedded therein.
