Patent number: 5291717Abstract: A method and resulting wood frame that can be used to construct a wall. To create a curved wall, lines are scribed onto the floor to define the wall radius. The wood frame is constructed by first arranging a plurality of studs in a spaced apart arrangement. The studs have first and second surfaces along the longitudinal axis, which terminate at first and second ends that have bottom and top surfaces respectively. A flexible flat member is then attached to the first end of the studs. The flexible member has a base portion which is nailed to the first surface of the studs and a plurality of spaced apart tabs. Some of the tabs are immediately adjacent the bottom of the studs, while other tabs are located between the spaced apart studs. The attached studs are then lifted into place and the flexible member is bent until the curved member follows the scribed outline. The frame is then nailed to the floor through the tabs that are located between the studs.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1991Date of Patent: March 8, 1994Inventor: Arthur R. Turner

Patent number: 5085027Abstract: This relates to a panel of the type which includes a core covered by veneer and generally relates to a furniture panel. Such panels have a front edge which is contoured and is generally rounded. The panel in question has a generally rounded edge which terminates at the bottom thereof in a low radius portion, i.e., on the order of 2 mm. Because of this very low radius it is virtually impossible to take a single sheet of veneer and wrap it around such a radius. The problem is solved by using two separate veneers, an upper and a lower, and where the low radius edge portion is, machining a channel in the plug core and filling the channel with a projecting plug which then has the projecting portion thereof machines to provide a smooth continuous surface. Additionally, in order that there may be no demarcation of materials, the plug is formed of the same material as the veneers.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1990Date of Patent: February 4, 1992Assignee: Herman Miller, Inc.Inventors: Duane G. Patent number: 4543229Abstract: A molded insulating insert of expanded polystyrene has a central section and hingedly connected side sections which are bendable toward each other to bring the insert to a U-shaped configuration for insertion in a building block cavity. The hinges are formed to provide resistance to full ninety degree bending of the side sections so that the insert side sections are inclined slightly outwardly in a free condition. On flexing inwardly and insertion in a block cavity the side sections tend to spring outwardly and frictionally grip the walls of the cavity. Lug-notch connection means frictionally retain the inserts in the U-shaped configuration and prevent dislodgement of sections in the event of hinge rupture. In molding the inserts, a transfer process is employed with the hinges partially formed in a hot mold and thereafter fully formed in a cold mold. The polystyrene is compressed in the hinge area to a higher density for hinge integrity. Density in the hinge area is approximately doubled.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1983Date of Patent: September 24, 1985Inventor: David L. Nickerson
