When in the first position, a wind turbine or blade assembly can be hoisted to the top of the tower. The wind turbine or blade assembly is then moved into position for mounting to the tower as the frame or truss is pivoted to a second position. When the turbine and blade assembly are secured to the tower, the frame or truss is disconnected from the tower and lowered to the ground.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2007Date of Patent: February 1, 2011Assignee: Wind Tower Systems, LLCInventors: Tracy Livingston, Terry Schrader, James Goldhardt, James Lott

Publication number: 20100313495Abstract: A mast assembly having a base, and a mast pivotally connected to the base for movement between a horizontal and an upright position. A linear actuator is connected between the base and the mast and is extensible to move mast about the pivot. A strut is selectively positioned between the mast and the base to inhibit pivotal movement toward the horizontal position during lifting of the mast. A plurality of abutments on the base permits selective connection between the actuator and the base. The strut position supports the mast while said actuator is moved between the abutments.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 14, 2010Publication date: December 16, 2010Inventor: Christopher Bernard Grant

Publication number: 20100313497Abstract: The invention relates to a wind turbine tower comprising at least two adjacent metal tower plates. The wind turbine tower is characterized in that, the tower plates are connected by one or more fish joints. The invention further relates to a wind turbine and a method for assembling a wind turbine tower.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 19, 2008Publication date: December 16, 2010Inventor: Jesper Kofoed Jensen

Patent number: 7849659Abstract: A method and apparatus for creating a reinforced vertical multi-sided monopole tower for supporting equipment including a multi-sided monopole, a plurality of holes on three equally spaced sides of the multi-sided monopole tower and tower reinforcement apparatus mounted to the holes. The tower reinforcement apparatus includes bolts supporting a first flat bar and a second flat bar on each side of the tower. The upper end of the first flat bar abuts a lower end of the second bar and a plate is bolted over adjacent ends connecting the first and second flat bar such that the first and second flat bars are sandwiched between the plate and a side of the perimeter of the monopole.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2005Date of Patent: December 14, 2010Inventor: Michael J. Publication number: 20100307097Abstract: A structural flange connection system and method that utilizes structural flanges having a standard bolted connection and a mechanical bond to effectively manage and assist the retention of bolt preloads and substantially eliminate movement between the flange faces due to a reduction in the need for friction load being generated by the bolt clamping force in the flange connection. The structural flanges of the structural flange connection system and method each include an outer rim and a flange lip having a face and a shoulder. The structural flange connection system and method may be utilized in the manufacture and installation of a wind turbine tower, which may be made up of one or more tower sections, and each tower section may terminate in structural flanges of the structural flange connection system and method. When properly aligned, the structural flanges may be bolted together. When each tower section is properly aligned and bolted, the mechanical bond of the structural flanges is also joined together.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 20, 2010Publication date: December 9, 2010Inventors: Thomas Nott Word, III, Cecil Leon Hartman, JR.

Publication number: 20100300034Abstract: Top and bottom packing brackets for supporting respective smaller top and larger bottom ends of a tapered architectural column during shipment and storage. Each of the packing brackets includes a ring portion and a surrounding frame portion joined together by webbing extending therebetween. The ring portion of the respective top and bottom packing brackets are sized to closely receive the smaller top and larger bottom ends of the columns.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 21, 2010Publication date: December 2, 2010Inventors: Nicholas N. Patent number: 7836661Abstract: A method of camouflaging a structure against a background having a generally uniform composition of hue, saturation and brightness. In one embodiment, spaced regions on the exterior of a structure are colored with differing colors and regions between the spaced regions are colored with a gradient of the differing colors so as to create a gradual color transition between the spaced regions. In another embodiment, at least one reflector and, optionally at least one color filter, are located on a structure to reflect light in the foreground to a vantage point, and optionally filter such light, so as to effect a blending of at least a portion of the structure into the background when viewed from the vantage point.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2007Date of Patent: November 23, 2010Inventor: John J. Publication number: 20100281818Abstract: A method for erecting a tower includes the steps of providing a first pre-cast section of concrete and positioning it atop a foundation. A radially-inwardly extending ledge is attached to an interior wall of the first pre-cast section and a plurality of jacks is positioned below the ledge in circumferentially spaced apart relation to one another. The ledge and the first pre-cast section are raised to a first height by operating jacks in an ascending mode. A second pre-cast section is positioned beneath the first pre-cast section after the first pre-cast section has been lifted to the first height. The first pre-cast section is lowered onto the second pre-cast section by operating the jacks in a descending mode or the second pre-cast section is lifted by operating the jacks in ascending mode. An assembly building that surrounds a base of the tower protects workers from inclement weather.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 7, 2009Publication date: November 11, 2010Inventor: George L. Southworth

Publication number: 20100281819Abstract: A wind turbine is formed of a concrete tower which is erected by slip forming. A primary lifting device is erected onto the tower by being lifted together with the slip form and being subsequently transferred onto the tower from the slip form after the tower has been formed. The nacelle, generator, and rotor of the turbine are then lifted onto the tower using the primary lifting device. A secondary lifting device supported on the tower is used to lower the primary lifting device to the ground after the nacelle, generator and rotor are assembled. The height of the tower is therefore not limited by the availability of suitable cranes so that a greater height of tower can be erected to take advantage of winds at greater elevation.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 1, 2010Publication date: November 11, 2010Inventor: Bradley D.
