The monomer mixture is polymerized in a solvent/precipitant through exposure to ionizing radiation in the absence any chemical mediators. If an exposure mask is employed to block out certain regions of the radiation cross section, then a patterned microstructure is formed. The polymerization mechanism is based on the so-called free-radical retrograde-precipitation polymerization process, in which polymerization occurs while the system is phase separating above the lower critical solution temperature. This method was extended to produce a crosslinked line grid-pattern of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide), which has been known to have thermoreversible properties.

More particularly, the present invention relates to a combination of inorganic filler having a 50th percentile particle diameter of from about 3 to about 9 micrometers comprised of aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, ceramic spheres or mixtures thereof, and particles having a 50th percentile particle diameter of from about 10 to about 150 micrometers. The liquid coatings have a viscosity before curing of from about 100 cps (mPa-s) to about 70,000 cps (mPa-s) at a shear rate of 0.15 s?1. The use of inorganic filler materials of the defined type and particle size are combined with the curable organic coating to improve the scratch resistance of the coating without a negative impact on the physical and performance properties or application parameters of the original coating material.

A bonding composition applied to a dental substrate and irradiated with radiant energy is more polymerized in a region adjacent to the dental substrate, while a less polymerized inhibition layer forms in the region of the surface. Packing an uncured amalgam into the dental preparation mechanically disrupts the inhibition layer so as to form peaks, troughs and other irregularities.
