Abstract: Two stage film-forming polymers having a soft first and a hard second stage are prepared by emulsion polymerizing the first stage and then, in the presence of a coalescent, the second stage. The polymers combine low MFT with superior early block resistance and high temperature hardness.

Abstract: Stable suspension of a water-soluble polymer comprising solid particles of this water-soluble polymer in a liquid hydrocarbon medium which also comprises a thickening agent selected from the alkali or alkaline-earth metal salts of fatty acids having 6-33 carbon atoms. The resultant suspensions are stable and dissolve easily when dispersed in water; they can be used in enhanced oil recovery. They may also contain minor proportions of water and/or of C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 monoalcohols or C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 diols.

Abstract: A process is provided for preparing coating compositions suitable for a primerless application to plastic substrates, which includes catalyzed prehydrolysis of a silylated UV screen component. Preferred embodiments employ catalyzing agents which can be removed from the prehydrolysis solution. Coating compositions made by the process are also disclosed.
Abstract: Alkoxylation products in form of solutions in organic solvents or, preferably, in form of aqueous emulsions, stable against hydrolytic influences are used in a process for finishing textile materials to impart to these an excellent soft, superficially smooth fell connected with the improvement of tearing strength, abrasion resistance and sewability.The alkoxylation products are obtained by alkoxylation of hydrogen organopolysiloxanes, in particular of methyl hydrogen polysiloxanes with monovalent saturated and/or unsaturated alcohols having 4 to 22 C atoms.
Abstract: Composition for effectively sealing the surface of a substrate from penetration by solvents commonly used in automotive primer, paint and paint thinners. The coating composition is particularly useful for providing a sealed surface for priming and topcoating reaction injected molded urethane, reinforced reaction injection molded urethane, and other substrates which are sensitive to the organic solvents normally present in automotive primer and paint. The composition for sealing the surface of the substrate comprises a urethane polymer, water, and a monohydric alcohol having less than seven carbon atoms.

Abstract: A solid composition of coated water-soluble polymer is made from 80 to 250 parts b.w. of solid particles of at least one water-soluble polymer coated with 100 parts b.w. of at least one paraffinic product solid at room temperature and whose melting point is preferably from 40.degree. to 90.degree. C. The solid composition is made by dispersing particles of the water-soluble polymer in the molten paraffinic product and then cooling down to room temperature.

More particularly, this invention relates to a process for the preparation of solution polymerizates of acrylic or methacrylic acid esters of alcohols wherein acrylic or methacrylic monomers are polymerized in a solvent of high-boiling alcohols of from 8 to 40 carbon atoms and 1 to 6 hydroxyl groups, the total batch to be polymerized containing from about 15 to 85 percent by weight of polymerizable substance, based on the weight of the total batch. This invention also relates to a method of using said solution polymerizates to improve the flow properties of lacquers.

Abstract: Pharmaceutical coatings in the form of aqueous dispersion of a water insoluble polymer prepared by dissolving the polymer in a water immiscible organic solvent, emulsifying the organic solution in water, optionally with the aid of additives, and stripping the organic solvent from the system to provide a colloidal, or near colloidal, aqueous dispersion or latex of small, even sized polymeric particles which are applied to pharmaceutical dosages from highly loaded latices. The latexes, which display resistance to bacterial and mold growth and, when combined with selected additives, provides convenient, attractive coating compositions which afford excellent protection and varied release properties to pharmaceutical dosages.
Abstract: A melt-adhesive traffic paint composition having improved low temperature stability is disclosed which comprises 20-35% by weight of a dimer acid-modified polyamide resin, 1-5% by weight of a plasticizer, 30-45% by weight of an inorganic filler, and balance a coloring pigment and a reflective agent. The composition may further comprise a thermoplastic resin such as hydrogenated rosin or a rosin-modified maleic acid resin. The resultant paint has improved low temperature stability and improved abrasion resistance and is thus highly resistant to the action of spike tires or tire chains.
Abstract: The object of this invention is to provide a composition of thermoplastic rubber which can be extruded into fibers and films with exceptional strength and good elasticity. Current formulations of some thermoplastic rubbers cannot be extruded into fibers or films with the accompanying strength and elasticity.Compositions of the current invention comprise 20 to 50% by weight of one of a group of fatty acids or fatty alcohols containing from about 12 to about 24 carbon atoms and 80 to 50% by weight of a member selected from the group consisting of A-B-A block copolymers, where B is poly(ethylenebutylene) and A is a thermoplastic polymer which is phase incompatible with B.This composition of matter results in a thermoplastic rubber composition that is easily extrudable into fibers or films. Extruded fibers of the current composition can be made into elastic fabrics, elastic bands for clothing or made into nonwoven structures for use in elastic bandages or wrapping.
Abstract: Novel branched-chain monoalcohols and derivatives thereof are disclosed. Such derivatives are selected from the group consisting of(a) esters of aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic acids having at least 2 carbon atoms and 1, 2 or 3 carboxyl groups;(b) urethanes of aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic isocyanates;(c) monoethers of polyalkylene oxide glycols having 2 to 50 alkylene oxide units each containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms and the alkylpolyoxyalkylene sulfates derived therefrom;(d) sulfates.The branched-chain monoalcohols are obtained by reduction of branched-chain monocarboxylic acids or esters thereof. Said acids are telomeric acids obtained by the free radical addition of 1 mole of acetic anhydride to at least three moles of hexene and/or higher olefins containing up to 30 or more carbon atoms (C.sub.30+) in the presence of a trivalent manganese compound. The products of this invention are suitable for use in engine lubricating oils, lubricant compositions for polymers and wax compositions.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for forming a polymeric solution or gel having a viscosity of less than about 50,000 cps which includes the steps of forming a solvent system of an organic liquid and a polar cosolvent, the polar cosolvent being less than about 15 wt. % of the solvent system, a viscosity of the solvent system being less than about 1,000 cps: dissolving a neutralized sulfonated polymer in the solvent system to form a solution, a concentration of the neutralized sulfonated polymer in the solution being about 0.5 to about 20 wt. %, a viscosity of the solution being about 5 to about 5,000 cps; and adding about 1 to about 500 vol. % water to the solution having a viscosity less than about 5,000 cps, the water being immiscible with the solution and the polar cosolvent transferring from the solution phase to the water phase thereby causing the viscosity of said solution to increase by a factor of at least 2 to less than 50,000 cps.
