Patent number: 7464516Abstract: A system and method for placing an overwrap material on a bobbin of material is disclosed. The bobbin of material may be, for instance, a bobbin of paper, such as cigarette paper. The system automatically attaches the overwrap material to a leading edge of the bobbin, wraps the bobbin in the overwrap material, cuts the overwrap material, and secures the overwrap material to the bobbin. The overwrap material is used to protect the bobbin during shipping and storage. The overwrap material can also be used to assist in feeding of the bobbin of material into a process.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2006Date of Patent: December 16, 2008Assignee: Schweitzer-Manduit International, Inc.Inventor: David Allen Johnson

Patent number: 7331153Abstract: A product packaging apparatus that includes a notch former and a tab setter for creating an integrated tab on a product package. The notch former and tab setter are capable of forming a tab or an exposed area at any location of the product package, including creating a tab or an exposed area adjacent a longitudinal edge of the package. The notch former and the tab setter allow a tab to be created that has a length that extends beyond the longitudinal edge of the package. As a result, the present invention is capable of generating simple, easy to open packages that may also be re-used for re-mailing purposes.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2006Date of Patent: February 19, 2008Assignee: Sealed Air Corporation (US)Inventors: Laurence Sperry, Mario V. Patent number: 6889483Abstract: An easy-opening feature in a flexible package is provided by forming a tear feature in the package material by slitting, perforating, or otherwise forming a stress riser in the material, and affixing a label to the package material so that the label adheres to the tear feature. The formation of the tear feature and affixing of the label are performed prior to wrapping a product in the package material and sealing the material, and preferably are performed while the package material is moving along a path in a packaging apparatus. The label in one embodiment includes a detachable middle portion that tears free of the rest of the label upon pulling the detachable portion, such that remaining portions of the label remain on the package adjacent the opening created by the tear feature.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2002Date of Patent: May 10, 2005Assignee: Cryovac, Inc.Inventors: Stephen F. Patent number: 6513305Abstract: Chocolates are wrapped individually by a method that involves feeding single wrapping sheets along a first path in a first direction spaced at a selected pitch, in such a way that the trailing edge of one wrapping sheet and the leading edge of the next are distanced one from another, and at the same time feeding a continuous ribbon in a second direction along a second path that merges with the first path at an assembling station where the ribbon is stably united with the sheets; ribbon and sheet then advance together in a third direction, along which the ribbon is divided into discrete slivers by repeated cuts, each made between the trailing edge of one sheet and the leading edge of the next and at a distance such that each sliver will present a portion projecting from the trailing edge of the wrapping sheet to which it is attached.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2001Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Hershey Foods CorporationInventor: Mario Spatafora

Patent number: 6241646Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of using a laser to manufacture a container that has a tear-away spout. First, a flat card is formed by providing an outer substrate layer and then securing an inner aseptic layer to the outer substrate layer. After the flat card is formed, a cut of predetermined depth is made with a laser along a predetermined path in the outer substrate layer so that the cut does not puncture the inner aseptic layer. After the cut is made in the outer substrate layer, the flat card is folded to form a container that has a flap. The cut extends around the flap, and the flap has a tip. In order to form a spout, the tip is torn off at the cut.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1998Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: SIG Combibloc Inc.Inventor: Michael G. Tokarski

Patent number: 6174274Abstract: A method and apparatus for formation of a preformed bonded pull tab over a reseal liner is disclosed. The pull tab seal layer of material is bonded together with a reseal liner layer of material for insertion into a closure. The pull tab on the pull tab liner seal is formed prior to combination of the two layers and is folded backwards between the two layers of material. Thus, after combining the two layers, punching out the closure liner and insertion into the closure, the reseal liner is separated from the pull tab seal and the pull tab seal is adhered to the rim of the container. Only one punch press step is required for forming the closure and container seals and insertion of the members into the closure. By forming the pull tab prior to combining the two layers, an assembly of the pull tab and reseal liner is made more efficient and less time consuming.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1997Date of Patent: January 16, 2001Assignee: Rexam Plastics, Inc.Inventors: Ronnie Lee Hawkins, William R.
