  • Patent number: 6854246
Abstract: A flexible bag is positioned in a rigid container, such as a fifty-five gallon drum, and the bag is filled through its spout with flowable product, such as tomato paste. The bag is then expanded in the container to be substantially rigid and thereby reduce film movement and resultant flex cracking. A lid is sealed onto the container and a vacuum drawn from between the bag and the container, to, in turn, expand the bag. Gas volume needs to be present in the bag before the vacuum is applied so that the gas in the bag can expand from the vacuum on its outside. Once expanded, the container can be shipped.

Abstract: An automatic packaging apparatus has an arraying and supplying station, a sorting station and a packaging station. The arraying and supplying station forcibly arrays and supplies encased products to orient their caps in one direction. The sorting station selectively sorts the arrayed encased products to a first feed path for feeding the encased products to package the encased products in a abreast-arrayed attitude and a second feed path for feeding the encased products to package the encased products in a tandem-arrayed attitude. The packaging station automatically packages the encased products by a shrink sheet in the abreast-arrayed attitude or the tandem-arrayed attitude.

Abstract: A semiautomatic packaging machine utilizes a single servo motor to rotate a belt around single track, providing linear motion to two opposing loaders attached to the belt. As one loader approaches a retrieval area, an operator manually positions an article or group of articles with a unit of packaging material onto an infeed conveyor. Upon sensing the presence of the material to be packaged, a sensor sends a signal to a processor. The processor controls the servo motor and an elevating component to adjust the horizontal and vertical position of the loader to synchronize the positions of the loader and the article(s). The loader removes the article(s) from the infeed conveyor, and transports them through a closer or other packaging element. The packaged articles are released into a discharge area as a second loader simultaneously approaches the retrieval area to repeat the process.

The wrapping machine has a film dispensing unit (1), which comprises first supporting elements (2) for rotatably supporting a first wrapping film reel (3) on the film dispensing unit; first deflecting elements (51 . . . 510), over which the first wrapping film can be passed to the object to be wrapped; second supporting elements (6) for rotatably supporting a second wrapping film reel (7) on the film dispensing unit; a second deflecting element (9), over which the second wrapping film (8) can be passed. The second deflecting element (9) is mounted on the film dispensing unit (1) so as to be movable between a first position (I) and a second position (II). In position (I), the end of the second wrapping film (8) is in contact with the first wrapping film (4) to cause the first and second wrapping films to adhere to each other during the wrapping process in order to bring them one over the other onto the object to be wrapped.

Abstract: A self-closing package formed from a unitary two-ply or three-ply laminate sheeting having an inner surface which is entirely coated with cohesive material, which has the property of sticking only to itself, and having a first portion and second portion. An article may be placed on the first portion of the laminate sheeting before folding and forming he laminate sheeting into a self-closing package. To form the package, the second portion of the laminate sheeting is pulled upward around the article and folded over both the article and the first portion of the laminate sheeting so that the inner surface of both the first portion and second portion are opposed to each other. The package is closed and sealed by the cohesive coated inner surfaces of the first and second portions coming into contact with each other and thereby sticking to each other.

Abstract: A packaging machine is described. A plurality of working stations is arranged between the input side and output side of the machine. A conveyor moves packages carrying a product along a path from the input side to the output side through the working stations. A device feeds a cover film onto the packages. The cover film has two layers bonded together with a limited bonding strength. A first layer has a portion protruding beyond said second layer. Another device separates the first layer from the second layer in a defined region extending across the cover film transversely to the conveyor path. The separator seals the defined region of the cover film and supplies a pressurized fluid to said defined region. The defined region includes at least part of the protruding portion of the first layer. A method of using the packaging machine to package product also is described along with the package that is made.

Abstract: A method and a system of transporting a commodity includes the step of placing the commodity in a flexible hermetic container. The commodity is stored in the flexible hermetic container for at least a specific time period. The commodity is then moved from the flexible hermetic container to a shipping container having an insect barrier liner. The commodity is transported in the shipping container. The specific time period is a sufficient time period to kill substantially all of the insects that have infested the commodity prior to placement in the flexible hermetic container. In one embodiment, a vacuum is drawn on the flexible hermetic container to reduce the specific time period and an optional small amount of pesticide can be injected into the flexible hermetic container to which a vacuum has been applied to further reduce the specific time period. An inert gas is used to reduce the specific time period.
