  • Patent number: 5788114
Abstract: A system for packaging manufactured articles into respective cases along a feed line having an apparatus with stations for performing various functions, a unit for automatically stacking and feeding CD cases to be packaged in these stations and a unit for dispensing brochures or leaflets to be packaged in the CD at one of the stations. The automatic case feeding unit transfers a new stack, manually arranged, before a feed magazine into the feed magazine when it is sensed that the current stack is below a predetermined level. A pusher member is actuated to move the new stack into position in the feed magazine. The brochure feeding unit draws a bottom brochure via a conveyor belt from a stack of brochures, while the remaining brochures are retained by a partition element. The withdrawn brochure is stopped at a locating member, wherein the height of its back edge is reduced by pusher element so the brochure passes under the locating member and is passed to the corresponding packaging station.

  • Patent number: 5699653
Abstract: A pouch machine forms a series of pouches in a continuous web of pouch material by folding the web and then forming spaced side seals to define a pouch closed on three sides with an initially unsealed mouth on top. The pouch is opened to its maximum volume prior to filling by pressurizing the pouch. Pressurization is achieved by introducing a curtain of compressed air under a plate and passing the mouths of the pouches adjacent the plate and thus through the air curtain. The air curtain is preferably at least as wide as the mouth so the entire mouth is subjected to the air pressure, thereby causing the pouch to inflate to its maximum volume. Continuous web height control is provided to assure alignment of the web with the plate. A lip at the mouth may be formed by folding one edge of the pouch over prior to creation of the side seals. After filling the lip is folded back up prior to top sealing to make a balanced pouch.

Abstract: A new method of refilling ink into an empty ink-jet printer cartridge is intended to minimize leakage and waste during the refilling process. A fill hole of the printer cartridge is opened and a predetermined quantity of ink is introduced therethrough with, for example, a first syringe. Air is then introduced into inflatable bladders provided in the printer cartridge with a second tool, preferably a second syringe. The amount of air is carefully measured to correspond with the predetermined ink quantity so that no overflow occurs. The fill hole remains open to atmosphere during the air introduction step. While the syringe is still in place, the fill opening is then closed with a new plug and thereafter the second syringe removed from the equalize opening. This exerts a slight negative pressure which acts to provide a suction force and urge any ink in open ports inwardly into the housing, thus minimizing overall leakage and waste during the refill process.

  • Patent number: 5442898
Abstract: An automated bagging system with a device that performs the dual functions of opening a bag and then supporting the bag as the bag is filled with a product. A supply of air is guided into a wicketed bag by a pivotable plate in a first position. After the plate guides the air into the bag, thus fully opening the bag, the plate moves into a second position. In this second position, the plate clamps a side of the bag opposite the wicket between the plate and a stop plate. The plate and the stop plate, in combination with a clamp on the wicket side of the bag, effectively keep the bag open after the initial supply of air ends to allow the bag to receive a dispensed product. Additionally, the plate, stop plate and clamp support the bag. This support prevents the bag from being torn away from the wicket from the force of the product on the sides and bottom of the bag as the product falls into the bag.
