  • Patent number: 4247664
Abstract: Novel compounds formed by alkylating a polyvinyl aromatic resin with a substituted 1,2-dihydroquinoline (hereafter "TMDQ" for brevity), are found to be powerful stabilizers for organic materials subject to oxygen and heat degradation. As antioxidants these compounds are essentially non-bleeding and non-staining in rubber and polyolefins. Compositions comprising from about 0.1 to about 10.0 parts by weight of the novel compounds per 100 parts organic material, are found to be essentially stable for extended periods of time under normal conditions of use.A process for alkylating a polyvinyl aromatic resin with TMDQ necessarily utilizes at least a stoichiometric quantity, with respect to TMDQ, of an anhydrous Friedel-Crafts type acid-acting metal halide catalyst in a solvent for the resin. The reaction is carried out at an elevated temperature preferably at about the boiling point of the solvent.
