    Abstract: A method for preparing a spiral wound filtration module is provided. The module has a central permeate carrier tube. The method includes winding at least one filtration leaf about the permeate carrier tube. The filtration leaf includes a first membrane sheet, a permeate carrier sheet, and a second membrane sheet. The winding step creates an end face extending radially outwardly from the permeate tube on each end thereof. After winding, the filtration module is maintained in a wound state. An adhesive is then supplied to each end face and a vacuum is applied through each of the permeate tube. While the vacuum is applied, the permeate tube and filtration leaf assembly are spun in a centrifuge until the adhesive has solidified. After spinning, each end face of the module is severed at a distance between the level of adhesive along the feed spacer screen and the level of adhesive along the permeate carrier sheet.

The element is then disposed in a cylindrical casing, and immobilized therein by packing solid particles into the spaces between the layers of the spiral channels, and the spaces between external surfaces of the element and inner surfaces of the casing. A fluid stream introduced into a first of the channels will be directed to flow through the solid particle layers via the porous side walls of the distribution channels, and exit from the second channel. The module packed with adsorbent particles provides a thin-bed adsorber, and can use very small adsorbent particles for efficient adsorption without giving rise to high pressure drop.

An even number of flat filters made from a non-woven fabric of heat-resistant metallic fiber are laminated alternately with the same number of corrugated sheets made of a heat-resistant metal. The laminate thus formed are rolled into a columnar shape. Each space between the adjacent flat filters in which every other corrugated sheet is inserted is closed at one end of the filter element by a closure member. The other spaces between the adjacent flat filters are closed at the other end of the filter element.

With the pipe rotating, a strip of metal wool, preferably stainless steel wool, is wrapped around the pipe in repeated, overlapping helical layers each aligned at an acute angle X to the pipe axis, with adjacent layers angularly displaced by an angle 2X. The completed filter may have a tubular wire mesh around the pipe, between the pipe and the innermost layer of steel wool, and a multi-perforate sheath over the outermost layer of wool.

The outer filter media is also a depth type of filter media and has uniform density and is wound with adjacent windings abutting one another such that a continuous groove or channel is provided along the length of the cartridge. The groove or channel provides a greater effective surface area on the outer surface of the filter cartridge. The outer strip of filter media preferably comprises a lengthwise-extending body panel with a pair of leaves extending along either edge of the body panel. The leaves are folded against the lower surface of the outer filter media to provide a multi-layer outer filter media structure.

    Abstract: A catalytic air cleaner purifies air in enclosed spaces, such as in an aircraft or spacecraft. The air cleaner includes a pair of metal strips, wound into a double spiral. The strips have projections, affixed to the strips, to maintain the spacing between turns of the spiral. The spiral defines a core which accommodates an electrically heated catalytic converter. The strips themselves have no catalyst coating. A pair of ports at the periphery of the spiral allows air to enter and leave the spiral through inlet and outlet channels. Air entering the spiral through the inlet channel receives heat, by heat exchange, from air leaving the spiral, and then enters the core, where the electrically heated catalytic converter burns off various impurities. The air then leaves the spiral through the outlet channel, and becomes cooled by transferring its heat to the incoming air.
