Abstract: A process for the enantioselective reduction of prochiral ketones to chiral alcohols by (a) the reaction of a prochiral ketone with a silane agent, which is present in a stoichiometric quantity, in the presence of a catalyst derived from a Zn, Co or Cd precursor compound and from a chiral amine, imine, alcohol or amino alcohol ligand; (b) the hydrolysis of the siloxane obtained using an appropriate agent; and (c) the separation and purification of the optically active alcohol formed. Polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) is a preferred silane agent, zinc is a preferred metal, and the precursor compound is produced by reacting a salt or complex of the respective metal with the reducing agent. In another embodiment, an appropriate salt of the chosen metal is used directly in the reaction with the chiral ligand to produce the catalytic form after reaction with the ligand. The process enables high enantiomeric excesses (ee) to be obtained in chiral alcohols.

Abstract: A method for the reduction in iodine content in a mixture, particularly in a mixture of carboxylic acids and/or carboxylic anhydrides with alkyl iodides and/or hydriodic acid, comprises contacting the organic medium in the vapor phase at elevated temperature with a metal salt dispersed on activated charcoal. The metal salt may be a carboxylate salt, a carbonate, an oxide, a hydroxide and any other salt, which may react with the organic medium to give a metal carboxylate salt. The metal may be a main group element, a lanthanide, an actinide, zinc and copper. This process converts alkyl iodide compounds converted to their corresponding carboxylate esters, while the iodine is bound in the purification mass as inorganic iodide.

The complexes are of the formula[Lys].sub.m-n (M) .sub.y X.sub.zwherein: [Lys] is the amino acid lysine; M is a metal ion of either iron, copper, zinc, manganese, or cobalt; m is the valency of the selected metal ion; n is a positive integer less than m; y and z are integers selected to electrostatically balance the cationic and anionic charges of the metal lysine complex; and X is an anion selected from the group including hydroxides, halides, sulfates, phosphates, carbonates, and acetates. The metal lysine hydrochloride complexes are prepared by dissolving in water an oxide or salt of the metal. To the aqueous solution, a quantity of lysine monohydrochloride in a molar ratio to the metal ion of between 0.5 and 4.0 is added and the solution is heated to between 20.degree. C. and 100.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4758682
Abstract: A complex of a tetradentate tetraanionic ligand L of the formula: ##STR1## and a metal, preferably a transition metal, is described where Z is an anionic oxidation reistant metal complexing group, Ch is an oxidation resistant chelate group containing 1 to 4 chain atoms and Y is hydrogen. The chelate and ring Z-Ch-M-Z functional groups Z, such as N or O, are resistant to oxidation and the ring contains 4 to 7 preferably 5 to 6 chain atoms. An osmium complex containing two pyridine ligands is an oxidation catalyst. Further activation by anodic oxidation and heating to a temperature exceeding 30.degree. C. greatly increases catalytic activity.
