Abstract: Preparation of ethylene copolymers from ethylene and polar and/or non-polar comonomers in the presence of selected nickel-containing catalysts.
Abstract: Water soluble polymers are useful in combination with cobalt(III) redox reagents. When incorporated with the polymers, the cobalt(III) reagents exhibit improved sensitivity compared to fresh solutions of the reagents. In preferred embodiments, the cobalt(III) reagents are coated on a support using the water soluble polymer as a binder. Small areas of the coated support are then cut out and placed in a buffer solution to provide a working reagent solution. The solution is particularly useful in the testing of urine for significant bacteriuria.
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing a solution of a non-ferrous metal sulphonate by reacting a non-ferrous metal with a sulphonic acid, the non-ferrous metal being brought into contact with a sulphonic acid at a temperature of from 20.degree. to 120.degree. C. in the presence of oxygen or oxygen-containing gases.
Abstract: The present invention provides a complex compound having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.1, are the same or different and each is an alkyl group, a phenyl group or a substituted derivative of a phenyl group;wherein R.sub.2 and R.sub.2, are the same or different and each is hydrogen, an unbranched alkyl group, a halide or a group having the structure ##STR2## wherein R is hydrogen, an alkoxide group, an alkyl group, or OH; wherein R.sub.3 and R.sub.3, are the same or different and each is hydrogen or an alkyl group;wherein X and X' are the same or different and each is a water soluble group having weak to intermediate ligand field strength; andQ is a soluble, pharmaceutically acceptable negative ion.The invention also provides a method of treating a subject having a condition associated with the presence of free radicals in quantities sufficient to cause undesirable symptoms.
Abstract: Reagents and methods for the determination of analytes are disclosed, using water soluble cobalt(III) complexes and metallizable dyes to form cobalt(III) complexes of the metallizable dyes. Analytes which can be determined include enzymes, cells and biological reductants, such as NADH, NADPH and ascorbate. Amplification is provided since one equivalent of the analyte provides more than one equivalent of the detectable species.
Abstract: Linear 1-olefins are prepared from internal olefins by (i) reacting them in the presence of an isomerization catalyst and a tri-lower alkyl aluminum so as to cause the internal olefin to isomerize to 1-olefins which displace the lower alkyl groups to form a trialkyl aluminum compound in which at least one of the alkyl groups is a linear alkyl derived from the 1-olefin, and, thereafter, (ii) reacting the trialkyl aluminum compound with a 1-olefin so as to displace the linear alkyl from the trialkyl aluminum compound, thereby forming a linear 1-olefin product which is substantially free of internal olefins.

Abstract: A method for chemically modifying an anionic metal complex, by obtaining from an anionic metal complex, insoluble in a non-aqueous solvent and a clathrate compound a clathrate complex thereof with a counter cation of said metal complex, which is soluble in a non-aqueous solvent, and then reacting functional groups of the metal complex, which are not concerned with the coordination of said metal complex, with an organic reagent in the presence of a reaction assistant.
Abstract: There is disclosed a process for the preparation of analytically pure chelate complexes which can be used in diagnostic medicine, for example as contrast media or radiopharmaceuticals. The process comprises transcomplexing a complex of a .beta.-dicarbonyl compound and a metal ion, for example a metal acetylacetonate, which is readily soluble in an organic solvent that is not miscible in all proportions with water, with a stoichiometric amount or with a less than equivalent amount of a chelating agent whose binding affinity for the metal ion is greater than that of the .beta.-dicarbonyl compound.

Abstract: A method is provided for stabilizing alkylenebisdithiocarbamates, such as 1,2-ethylenebisdithiocarbamates, (EBDC) by mixing the EBDC with formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasing agents (donor) and a co-polymerization agent which forces the polymerization reaction of formaldehyde and ethylenethioureas toward completion to reduce and stabilize the content of and inhibit the formation of ethylenethiourea (ETU) in the EBDC. Paraformaldehyde as donor is preferably added in an amount of about 0.1 to 2 weight percent based upon the EBDC, together with a co-polymerization agent such as melamine or hydroquinone. The stabilized EBDC product contains aldehyde, co-polymerization agent, mono- and /or dimethylolethylenethioureas and polymerization products thereof, and less than about 0.015 weight percent ETU per se.

Abstract: Homologs of Diester-DTPA-Paramagnetic compounds (such as dimethyl acetyl diethylene triamine triacetic acid) provide excellent contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The magnetic dipole generated by the unpaired electron within the paramagnetic (PM) atom, causes a local reduction in the bulk magnetic field of the MRI system. The resulting shorting of the T1 (spin lattice) relaxation time in the local hydrogen protons within the area of interest, causes an intense "free induction signal" and a corresponding modulation in the collected scanning data. The tissue or organ of interest appears on the MRI display highlighted in white. Background tissue is displayed as darker or lower intensity greys. The ester homologs replace two carboxylic acids to form functional ester groups on the DTPA chelator. The homologs cause the Diester-DTPA-PM contrast agents to go into solution readily, and promotes organ selectivity.
Abstract: Dithiolene complexes of the formula ##STR1## where Me is nickel, palladium or platinum, and <A is ##STR2## are readily soluble in organic solvents and have a high absorption in the range from 750 to 850 nm and are therefore very useful for optical recording media. The complexes may furthermore be used as antioxidants, stabilizers, corrosion inhibitors or catalysts, or as protective layers for colored photographic layers.

Abstract: The Ferrioxamine (FOM) family of chelates and amide homologs thereof provide excellent contrast agents for magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The magnetic dipole generated by unpaired electrons within the paramagnetic Fe(III) atoms, cause a local reduction in the bulk magnetic field Bz of the MR system. The resulting shorting of the T1 (spin lattice) relaxation time in the local hydrogen protons within the area of interest, causes an intense "free induction signal" and a corresponding modulation in the collected scanning data. The contrast agent within the tissue or organ of interest causes the tissue to appear on the MR display as a high intensity or white area. Background tissue is displayed as darker or lower intensity greys.FOM does not penetrate the blood-brain-barrier under normal circumstances; and is therefore useful in detecting the extravasation of arterial blood in the extravascular space during cerebral hemorrhaging and in the endema fluid surrounding tumors.
