Publication number: 20110178327Abstract: The invention provides a method of continuously producing high quality quaternized N,N-dialkylaminoethyl (meth)acrylates (DMAEA.MCQ) that has a long shelf life and which is stable in water. The method involves placing starting materials into a continuously stirred tank reactor in the presence of less than 6% water. This low amount of water causes two liquid phases to form and prevents unwanted side reactions. The denser liquid phase contains DMAEA.MCQ and the lighter phase contains the starting materials. Liquid from the denser phase is removed from a position where little of the lighter phase has been mixed in. The removed liquid then has any last traces of the starting materials reacted into DMAEA.MCQ and strips away any starting materials with a gas flow. The resulting liquid is high purity DMAEA.MCQ. Water can then safely be added to ease in the transport and use of the produced DMAEA.MCQ.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 21, 2010Publication date: July 21, 2011Inventors: Barbara E. Fair, Peter E. Patent number: 7829738Abstract: A method and apparatus for preparing a N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate in a continuous transesterification reaction. The reaction involves adding alkyl acrylates such as methacrylate or ethacrylate to a reboiler mechanism and efficiently removing alcohol co-products. Because the reaction is continuous, the alkyl acrylates can be added as needed to increase output, decrease output, or fine-tune the reaction dynamics. An entrainer is used to form a volatile azeotrope which contains both alcohol and entrainer and which is easily removed from the reboiler mechanism. This method reduces the amount of entrainer needed per unit of alkyl acrylate used and eliminates any need to purify the end product from entrainer contamination of the resulting N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate product.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2009Date of Patent: November 9, 2010Assignee: Nalco CompanyInventors: Larry E. Publication number: 20040019224Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there are provided thermosetting resin compositions with a reduced propensity to shrink in volume upon cure and methods of use therefor. The compositions of the present invention include compounds having aromatic, rigid-rod like spacer groups between the crosslinkable moieties. As such, these compounds impart a degree of liquid crystal-like character to the thermosetting resin composition which results in lower shrinkage upon cure. This effect follows from the well-known expansion that occurs when liquid crystal-like materials pass from a nematic liquid crystal-like state to an isotropic state. Further provided by the present invention are low shrinkage die attach pastes and methods of use therefor.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 14, 2003Publication date: January 29, 2004Applicant: Henkel Loctite CorporationInventors: Stephen M. Publication number: 20030036574Abstract: The invention provides ion exchange and electrochemical methods and devices employing anion exchange polymers produced by substantially simultaneous quaternization and polymerization reactions. Anion selective polymers are produced in accordance with the invention by combining, an ethylenic tertiary amine monomer, an alkylating agent having a boiling point temperature of at least about 100° C., and a cross-linking agent in the presence of a polymerizing agent for a time and at a temperature sufficient to form the polymer. The alkylating agent and the cross-linking agent may be the same compound, a cross-linking alkylating agent. The polymers may be produced in the presence of solvents and/or in the presence of diluting monomers which are incorporated into the polymers.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 24, 2002Publication date: February 20, 2003Inventors: Russell J.
