  • Patent number: 6960693
Abstract: The present invention relates to an oxidation reaction catalyzed by a reaction controlled phase-transfer catalyst having the general formula of [R1R2R3R4N]xHy[A] or QmMO3(L). The catalysts themselves are not soluble in the reaction medium, but can form an active species that is soluble in the reaction medium under the action of one of the reactants. The active species can in turn react selectively with another reactant. When one of the reactants is completely consumed, the catalyst will separated out from the reacting system and can be recovered by means of simple separation method. The recovered catalyst can be recycled with comparable efficiency as that of the original catalyst. The separation of said catalyst is similar to that of heterogeneous catalyst while said catalyst will completely exhibit the characteristics of homogeneous catalyst during the reaction.

  • Patent number: 5430192
Abstract: The moisture vapor transmission rates of sealants containing liquid polysulfides made from mixtures of a hexylene dihalide and a chloroethyl formal wherein the molar ratio is from about 1.5:1 to about 2.3:1 are extremely low. A preferred ratio is 0.64:0.36. The new liquid polysulfide is useful in conventional sealant formulations for insulated glass window units.

  • Patent number: 5349091
Abstract: Solid waste materials comprising oxidatively-cured, solid polysulfide sealants containing spent oxidant, fillers, plasticizers, and other formulating aids are reverted to a liquid sealant comprising mercaptan-terminated polysulfides by reducing them with a liquid mercaptan-terminated polysulfide at temperatures ranging from about 50.degree. to about 110.degree. C. Upon the addition of fresh curing agent and recuring, the reclaimed sealant has satisfactory tensile strength and elongation properties.

  • Patent number: 5208382
Abstract: The copper corrosiveness of organic sulfides is reduced by treating them with an alkali metal-containing or alkaline earth metal-containing substance capable of dissolving elemental sulfur (e.g., sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, etc.). The process is conducted in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst in an aqueous liquid reaction medium. Experiments have shown that it is possible by use of this process to reduce the copper corrosiveness to a level below that exhibited by a product formed by treating the same initial organic sulfide in the same way but in the absence of a phase transfer catalyst.
