Abstract: Novel benzyl ethers of cyclic 1,1-diols, of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is phenyl or substituted phenyl,R.sup.2 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, haloalkyl or --CHX--R.sup.1,X is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, haloalkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl,Y and Y' are individually selected from hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl and substituted phenyl andA is saturated or unsaturated alkylene or substituted alkylene;have been found outstandingly effective as herbicides, particularly as selective herbicides.

Abstract: The sulfur-containing polyoxyalkylenes having the formula: ##STR1## wherein E is --SW or a halogen atom; W is hydrogen, phenyl, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkali metal or ammonium ion, or a heterocyclic radical containing from 2 to 4 hetero atoms in a 5-or 6-membered ring which may be monocyclic or may be fused to an aromatic ring; A, C and D represent lower alkylene of 2 to 4 carbon atoms; B is alkylene of 2 to 8 carbon atoms; y and z are each integers having a value of 0 to 50; x is an integer having a value of from 2 to 50; and n is an integer having a value of from 1 to 30; and intermixtures of said polyoxyalkylenes.The above compounds display a wide variety of uses; however, all are active metal working lubricants.

Abstract: Linear dimers of certain bisphenols are provided by heating together a monocapped bisphenol salt and a certain dihalogenated alkylene or alkarylene compound in the presence of an inert organic solvent. The linear bisphenol dimers are useful as anti-oxidants and intermediates for making polycarbonates, polyesters and block polymers.
Abstract: Certain sulfonium salts are herein described which are useful corrosion inhibitors in aqueous acidic cleaning solutions, even in the presence of ferric ions.
