A cap on the neck includes a slidable push button carrying a perforator to open the envelope in a central region of the envelope to allow the additional product to mix with the liquid and then to be discharged through an eccentric duct in the cap rather than having to pass through the center of the cap where the perforator is positioned.

    Abstract: An improved additive transfer device for storing and subsequently transferring a fluid material from an additive container to a rigid or semirigid solution container having an exposed closure. The improved additive transfer device is mounted on the additive container and includes a closure assembly fabricated from three components; a pierceable stopper, a slidable piercing pin and a hood member. The closure assembly is adapted to be positioned on the solution container. The two ended slidable piercing pin is disposed in a central opening in the pierceable stopper so that one end will pierce a diaphragm contained in the pierceable stopper. Resistance elements are provided between the slidable piercing pin and the central opening in the pierceable stopper to hold the slidable piercing pin away from the diaphragm in the pierceable stopper in one position and allow the slidable piercing pin to pierce the diaphragm and retain it within the central opening in a second position.

    Abstract: A mixing container and an adapter to interconnect the mixing container to a second container to permit intermixing of the contents of the containers. The mixing container has a neck with a plurality of raised circumferential ribs thereon. The adapter has a central cylindrical sleeve. A first end of the sleeve is surrounded by a cylindrical skirt. The interior surface of the first end of the sleeve has a plurality of circumferential grooves which enable the adapter to engage the ribs on the neck of the mixing container. The interior surface of the cylindrical skirt has a screw thread to enable the adapter to engage a conventional threaded container neck. The opposite, or second, end of the sleeve has a cutting sleeve therein, concentric with the sleeve. The cutting sleeve is adapted to pierce a seal on the mixing container. The second end of the sleeve frictionally engages the raised circumferential ribs on the mixing container during the mixing operation.

    Abstract: A sterile, closed drug delivery system (10) is provided comprising a flexible container (12), a capsule (22) coupled to the flexible container and a standard glass drug vial (36) positioned within the capsule. The flexible container has a liquid diluent therein. The capsule has supporting legs (32-35) which extend inwardly from the capsule to support the vial and also a highly flexible, pleated cap (28) which enables the drug vial to be manually moved relative to the supporting legs. The capsule is coupled to the flexible container by means of a hollow spike (54) located within the capsule and a frangible member (58) located within the flexible container, which frangible member allows fluid passage only when it is broken. Manual pressing of the pleated cap moves the drug vial downwardly onto the spike, piercing the stopper of the drug vial. Once the frangible member is broken, there is sterile communication between the drug vial and the liquid diluent contents of the flexible container.

    Abstract: A multi-cartridge syringe assembly includes one cartridge containing a diluent and insertable within another cartridge containing dry medication. The nose of the diluent cartridge supports a cannula and is surrounded by a lock head member. In an initial mode, the exposed cannula is surrounded by a resilient cover. A retaining element extending rearwardly from a piston in the medication cartridge includes lock elements sequentially engageable with first and second annular devices on the lock head member as the two cartridges are axially displaced towards each other. In a first position the two cartridges are locked together without any axial displacement between the cannula and its cover while in a second position the cover is forced rearwardly of the cannula as the point of the cannula pierces the cover as well as the piston in the medication cartridge.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a device to one end of which a syringe can be connected and to the other end of which the mouth or opening of a bottle containing a drug or medicine can be connected. The device comprises a closed chamber having enclosed therein a needle which is in connection with the syringe. Members are provided by means of which the mouth or opening of the bottle is steadily connected to the device and means enabling the needle to perforate a seal plug and then a small rubber plug mounted on the bottle only when the device is blocked onto the bottle so that in any case it cannot be disconnected therefrom. Such a device can be disconnected from the bottle only after the needle has been caused to reenter the closed chamber, so as to prevent any possible dripping of the liquid outside of the device.

The closed system can incorporate a drug vial of standard construction. A unique junction of the closed system permits a drug vial with a drug therein to be connected in a sterile manner with a compressible chamber having a diluent therein, after the drug and diluent have been separately sterilized. The junction encloses the end portions of access means to each of the receptacles, maintaining the end portions in sterile, spaced relation and providing for the selective establishment of a sterile pathway between the drug and diluent for mixing in a closed environment. The compressible chamber is of a unique design including gas-trapping and reservoir compartments in open communication. The compressible chamber is utilized with the junction to provide an efficient, sterile storage and mixing system.
