  • Patent number: 7680608
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of determining a spatial distribution of magnetic particles in an examination area, in which a magnetic field is generated which has a first part-region having a relatively low magnetic field strength and a second part-region having a relatively high magnetic field strength. The position of the two part-regions is changed, as a result of which the magnetization in the examination area changes, and real measured values which depend on the change in magnetization are recorded. A dependence distribution which depends on a spatial distribution of magnetic particles is then determined such that a sum which comprises as summands a) the difference of the real measured values from fictitious measured values which are determined by applying a transfer function to the dependence distribution, and b) the product of a regularization parameter and of a regularization value which is determined by applying the regularization functional to the dependence distribution, is minimized.

Abstract: A method for simulating the insertion of a data storage medium into or removal of a data storage medium from an input/output station, alternatively referred to as an import/output station. In one application of the invention, a data storage resides in an I/O station slot. A first variable corresponding to this slot is modified to indicate that the slot is actually empty. A command is issued indicating that the I/O station has been accessed, triggering a scan of the slot by an automated robotic accessor. Since the accessor will detect that the slot is, in fact, full, it will report this status to a library manager which will, in turn, update the first variable. The action of updating this variable is reported to associated devices such as a host computer, host application, or other associated device. In this manner, the operation of the library manager and devices receiving status information may be tested without requiring that a physical data storage medium actually be removed and re-inserted.

  • Patent number: 7395168
Abstract: Spectrum data of white neutrons having different spectrum shapes, and SEE counts obtained by a white neutron method using this multiple spectrum data, are stored. A computing section reads out the spectrum data, divides the data into energy groups, and calculates and stores a total flux of each energy group. Furthermore, the computing section reads out the SEE counts with respect to each of the spectrum data and the total flux of each energy group, substitutes the SEE counts and the total flux into a simultaneous equation, and calculates the SEE cross section for each of the energy groups. Subsequently, the computing section calculates parameters which determine a formula of the approximate function of the SEE cross section as a function of energy, so that computed values of error counts obtained by integration of multiple spectra and the approximate function sufficiently match the actual measured values thereof.

Abstract: A railroad signal system interlocking is automatically tested. A control point interface corresponding to a predetermined function of the interlocking has an isolated section and a control section. The isolated section is connected with the interlocking and has a normal, inactivated state during operation of the interlocking, and an activated state for testing the interlocking by detecting an electrical characteristic representing the status of the predetermined function executed by the interlocking. The control section drives the isolated section to its activated state and receiving an output from the isolated section in response to the detected electrical characteristic, and delivers a status report.

  • Patent number: 7308397
Abstract: A method for controlling and emulating the functional and logical behaviors of an array of storage devices is established by loading a software module to an array controller board. The software module is integrated into the array controller subsystem manager by providing the necessary parameters required to insert the device and can control the inbound and outbound activities (commands, data, and status packages) regardless of the type, interface, and protocol of the disk/tape device. This aspect of the method allows the user to control the drive state transition and inject errors on the inbound and outbound drive traffics. Also, the method of this invention allows the drive module to recover in case of an array controller failure and to be removed from a list of devices like a regular drive.

  • Patent number: 7292954
Abstract: Aspects of the present invention are directed to systems, methods, and computer-readable media for measuring certain actuator system parameters of an actuator, e.g., an EMA in its working environment. Stiction and backlash are examples of such parameters, and these indicate the impending failure of an actuator system than conventional approaches of measuring the elapsed time of operation. When the measured backlash and/or stiction parameters exhibit a deleterious increase over time, e.g., by exceeding a preset threshold, imminent failure or the need for service/repair of the system is indicated.

  • Patent number: 7260492
Abstract: A control system for a failure mode testing system is described. The control system employs at least one control algorithm that enables the testing system to be operated at optimal pressure and frequency levels in order to generate a desired system response, such as a desired energy level and desired slope of the fast Fourier transform of the system response. Also described are a pressure dither system and a frequency ringing system for enhancing the operation of the actuator cylinders of the failure mode testing system. All three of the systems can be incorporated, either singularly or in combination, into a computer software program that can be employed to operate and control the failure mode testing system.

  • Patent number: 7254525
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided which reduces the equipment and time requirements for hard disk drive performance testing during manufacturing. This invention executes self-contained performance testing code that resides within the drive's manufacturing firmware, rather than relying on external testers. The invention involves exercising the drive's enqueue, dequeue, and command execution firmware, as well as the physical process of reading and writing data by simulating the host interface in code. The invention enqueues commands that typify the desired workload, allows a command ordering algorithm to sort the commands for execution, and allows the drive side code to execute the commands just as if an external host interface were attached. The invention is advantageous because the performance testing can be done by only applying power to the drive. The present invention also lends itself to performance tuning that can be done in manufacturing, to reduce drive-to-drive performance variations.

  • Patent number: 7243048
Abstract: A fault detection system and method is provided that facilitates detection of faults that are manifest over a plurality of different operational phases. The fault detection system and method use multiway principal component analysis (MPCA) to detect fault from turbine engine sensor data. Specifically, the fault detection system uses a plurality of load vectors, each of the plurality of load vectors representing a principal component in the turbine engine sensor data from the multiple operational phases. The load vectors are preferably developed using sets of historical sensor data. When developed using historical data covering multiple operational phases, the load vectors can be used to detect likely faults in turbine engines. Specifically, new sensor data from the multiple operational phases is projected on to the load vectors, generating a plurality of statistical measures that can be classified to determine if a fault is manifest in the new sensor data.
