In at least some embodiments, a probability component generates a ranked list of items that are relevant to users at a particular location using probability data associated with the list of items and the particular location. Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for accurately coding documents for a legal matter. The method, if used by experienced and motivated document reviewers, has the potential to dramatically improve adjusted review consistency, reduce coding errors, and produce the best review product. The method can also result in useful case history files, which are useful to litigation attorneys in every phrase of litigation including motion argument, merit trial, appeal, and future litigation.

Abstract: A computer-implemented process that utilizes digital and/or other resources to objectively rank a subject based on publications having a plurality of authors. The system assigns individualized credit to each subject axiomatically. The system finds self-citations pertaining to each subject and removes such self-citations. The system then ranks the subject objectively, typically through automatic data mining.

Abstract: In general, one aspect described can be embodied in a method for providing input to a document ranking process for ranking a plurality of documents, the document ranking process taking as input a quality of result statistic for a query and an individual document. The method can include, for a first document identified as a search result of a query, receiving information regarding an anchor contained within the first document, where the anchor provides a link to a second document; deriving a quality of result statistic for the second document from at least a portion of first data associated with the first document and the query, the first data being indicative of user behavior relative to the first document as a search result for the query; and providing the first quality of result statistic as input to the document ranking process for the second document and the query.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for associating location data from one or more unique sources. The place and time of a unique location enabled device are associated with stored demographic information relating to the particular place and particular time. The place and time of the unique location enabled device are associated with a historical record of past locations and time of locations that the device has been. Based on the association of demographical information and historical information, the unique location enabled device is assigned to one or more groups or tribes. The location of all members of the group or tribe can be aggregated and exported for further analysis or display, thereby showing all group or tribe members at a particular time and place.

Abstract: A social activity planning method includes the following operation. A database storing multiple candidate invitees with their geographical locations and interest scores towards a topic, and a social graph including vertices representing the candidate invitees and edges connecting two vertices representing mutual acquaintance of the associated candidate invitees is accessed. A social activity request including an invitation number, information about a social activity, and a familiarity condition for the social activity request is received. At least one feasible solution including the invitation number of the candidate invitees and meeting the familiarity condition is generated. A group of selected invitees are found based on the feasible solution and the information about the social activity.

Abstract: Techniques for enhancing content are disclosed. In some embodiments, enhancing content includes automatically identifying a set of modifications to the existing content of a page that would result in the page satisfying a set of search properties and applying at least a subset of the set of modifications to the page. Furthermore, techniques for enhancing link structure are disclosed. In some embodiments, enhancing link structure includes automatically determining a constrained link structure for a set of pages that satisfies a set of one or more constraints and that is at least in part different from an existing link structure of the set of pages and making one or more modifications to the existing link structure to at least in part realize the constrained link structure for the set of pages.

Abstract: A method of selecting and presenting content based on detecting an increased level of activity associated with the content is presented. The method includes providing a set of content items with associated descriptive terms. The method includes receiving user search input for identifying desired content items and, in response to the input entered by the user, presenting a subset of content items to the user. The method further includes receiving actions from the user selecting content items from the subset and analyzing the descriptive terms associated with the selected content items to detect an increased level of activity for descriptive terms associated with the content items selected by the users. The method includes, in response to receiving subsequent user search input, selecting and ordering a collection of content items based on promoting the ranking of content items associated with descriptive terms that have an increased level of recent activity.

In general, the subject matter described in this specification can be embodied in a computer-implemented method that includes: receiving multiple features, including a first feature indicative of presentation bias that affects document result selection for search results presented in a user interface of a document search service; obtaining, based on the multiple features, information regarding document result selections for searches performed using the document search service; generating a prior model using the information, the prior model representing a background probability of document result selection given values of the multiple features; and outputting the prior model to a ranking engine for ranking of search results to reduce influence of the presentation bias.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method comprises receiving a plurality of data streams into a data stream management system, wherein each data stream is obtained from a data streaming source and a reliance level is associated with each of the data streaming sources. When a continuous query is registered that specifies a reliance level attribute, the query is executed over the plurality of data streams using only those data streams obtained from a data streaming source associated with a suitable reliance level. For example, the reliance level attribute may establish a minimum reliance level, such that data stream having a lesser reliance level are not used. CQL may be enhanced with such an extra attribute which allows end users to specify the desired reliance level when submitting a query.

Abstract: Particular embodiments of a social-networking system maintain one or more data stores storing a social graph comprising user nodes, concept nodes, and edges connecting the nodes. Particular embodiments may determine a confidence score with respect to a user node and a concept node, wherein the confidence score is based at least in part on affinity scores associated with the edges along a sequence of nodes between the user node and the concept node in the social graph. The confidence score may be based on an overall probability that a random walk starting at the user node will end at the concept node. This overall probability may be determined by calculating, for each edge in the random walk, the probability of taking that edge during the random walk, based on the affinity score associated with that edge.

Abstract: The invention provides a system and method for analyzing a collection of communication messages. The communication messages may be any one of a collection of electronic mail messages, voicemail messages, instant messaging dialogues and other forms of communications. The collections of communications, such as electronic mail messages, may be selected by a user and then subsequently processed to determine the identity of any of the user's contacts within the communications. The contacts may then be arranged in a relative priority arrangement whereby contacts which have been identified as engaging in prior reciprocal communications with the user are given higher priority. Higher priority may also be given to contacts which engage in more recent communications with the user. Specific contact relationships may be inferred from the communications depending on whether specific contacts are repeatedly mentioned within the communication messages.

Abstract: Energy-saving methods and systems for updating media information on a media equipment device are provided. An update to media information is received at the media equipment device. Data identifying a weight for the update is retrieved from the storage device. The data may be related to the user's media preferences or viewing history of content associated with the update. A weight is then assigned to the update based on the retrieved data. The assigned update weight is compared to a threshold value which is retrieved from the storage device. If the update weight exceeds the threshold value, the device will switch from a first power mode of operation (e.g., sleep mode) to a higher power mode of operation (e.g., active mode) so that the media information may be updated with the information contained in the received update.

Abstract: A system and a method for the management of addressable network resources (e.g., Web pages, electronic documents accessed via a Uniform Resource Identifier, etc.) within a network are provided. Specifically, embodiments of addressable network resource selection systems and methods are disclosed for managing the analysis and identification of optimal links between addressable network resources. A resource selection component enables pruning of undesirable pages on the basis of various usage metrics, including user depart rate. The resource selection component may then identify optimal linking strategies by determining one or more linking scores for remaining pages based on any of a number of different page usage metrics. In other embodiments, addressable network resource selection systems and methods may weight linking scores to emphasize desired outcomes, such as encouraging exploration of a network-based site or encouraging high aggregate sales figures.

Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for performing selective encryption/decryption in a data storage system. During operation, the system receives a data block from a storage medium at an input/output layer, wherein the input/output layer serves as an interface between the storage medium and a buffer cache. Next, the system determines whether the data block is an encrypted data block. If not, the system stores the data block in the buffer cache. Otherwise, if the data block is an encrypted data block, the system retrieves a storage-key, wherein the storage-key is associated with a subset of storage, which is associated with the encrypted data block. Using the storage-key, the system then decrypts the encrypted data block to produce a decrypted data block. Finally, the system stores the decrypted data block in the buffer cache, wherein the data block remains encrypted in the storage medium.

The user context identifies a search context (i.e., the information the user is seeking) relative to an identity of the user, and the information context identifies destinations accessible by the user, including data objects and communications-based actions (e.g., voice over IP telephony calls, instant messaging session transcripts, etc.). The connection context identifies relationships between chosen destinations throughout the system, and the strength of those relationships determined from artifacts of the chosen destinations: the connection context is updated based on artifact detection. The portion of the connection context that is relevant to the user context is used to order the portion of the information context that is relevant to the user context, resulting in the ordered list of destination targets.

In an embodiment, the present invention estimates performance of local descriptors by (1) receiving a local descriptor relating to an object in a first image; (2) identifying one or more nearest neighbor descriptors relating to one or more images different from the first image, the nearest neighbor descriptors comprising nearest neighbors of the local descriptor; (3) calculating a quality score for the local descriptor based on the number of nearest neighbor descriptors that relate to images showing the object; and (4) determining, on the basis of the quality score, if the local descriptor is effective in identifying the object.

The response histograms describe or define a response probability for each subject matter expert, as a function of the corresponding present attributes for each of the resource elements.

Abstract: A solution for managing data in which historical execution information for a process is used to determine a set of data requirements for the process. The set of data requirements is then used to move data for the process from a slower storage device (e.g., a magnetic tape) to a faster storage device (e.g., a hard drive) before the process requests the data object (e.g., prefetch). In this manner, the prefetched data can be provided when requested by the process without delaying its execution while the data is moved from the slower storage device to the faster storage device.
