Abstract: In this invention, when images, in image files managed according to photographing dates, which match a search condition are to be displayed, the images matching the search condition are sequentially displayed such that the positions or distribution of the image files, of all image files, which match the search condition can be checked. For this reason, when the search condition is changed by operating upper and lower keys provided on the back face of a digital camera, a search is made for images matching the condition after the change. Indicators indicating the relative positions of the images matching the search condition in the list of image files arranged in the order of photographing dates are displayed. When the left and right keys are operated, one of images matching the search condition is displayed in the image display area.

Abstract: The present invention is an automated and extensible system for the analysis and retrieval of images based on region-of-interest (ROI) analysis of one or more true objects depicted by an image. The system uses a Regions Of Interest (ROI) database that is a relational or analytical database containing searchable vectors that represent the images stored in a repository. Entries in the ROI database are created by an image locator and ROI classifier that work in tandem to locate images within the repository and extract the relevant information that will be stored in the ROI database. Unlike existing region-of-interest search systems, the ROI classifier analyzes objects in an image to arrive at the actual features of the true object, instead of merely describing the features of the image of that object. Graphical searches are performed by the collaborative workings of an image retrieval module, an image search requestor and an ROI query module.

Abstract: There are disclosed methods to provide stable pose determinations of various three dimensional shapes. Methods are also disclosed for determining multiple, unique drawing descriptors for two dimensional drawings, and for obtaining intermediate three dimensional representations of two dimensional drawings as one way to determine the descriptor. Methods are also disclosed to provide for searching of two dimensional drawings and three dimensional shapes using user-defined input, which may be a drawing or sketch. User interactivity is provided to further refine search results.

Abstract: If a user specifies a location on a map image, he or she can see an image shot at that location. An imaging apparatus (an imaging/display apparatus 1 or an imaging apparatus 30) placed on a movable body transmits shot image data to a server apparatus together with additional data that includes location information about a photographing point, so that they are stored in the server apparatus. That is, the server apparatus accumulates pieces of image data obtained by photographing in various places by a great number of imaging apparatuses together with the location information thereof. A user of the display apparatus (the imaging/display apparatus 1 or the display apparatus 40) specifies a location on the map image.

Abstract: The target content selecting unit selects a first image from the content storage unit. The relevance calculating unit calculates relevance of second images to the first image by use of the metadata. The display content selecting unit identifies a second image selected before the first image, based on the history information, and selects the identified second image and any second images that satisfy a selection condition regarding the relevance. The output information generating unit generates output information that is used for displaying first selection information from which the first image can be selected and second selection information from which second images can be selected, on the display device. Abstract: In an embodiment of the invention, an electronic document (e-document) can be searched and found by capturing an image of the printed document. Instead of typing in a file name or searching through multiple directories, the user simply takes a picture of the document with a camera and the system uses the document image to locate the e-document. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, an image of a printed document can be useful for remote document sharing. In various embodiments of the invention, sharing an image of a printed document can be used to email a high quality paper document, send a high quality fax, or open a document to a page containing an annotation. Through co-design of the feature extraction and search algorithm in the system, the image feature detection robustness and search speed are improved at the same time.

Abstract: A search system using images is provided in which when a user does not know a relevant URL or search keyword correctly while surfing the Internet, he or she can search a desired website using only an image. The search system using images according to the present invention comprises an image search server and a user terminal. The image search system comprises: an image conversion section for converting the image included in the website information and the to-be-searched image uploaded by the user into search format images; an image search section for comparing eigen values of both the to-be-searched image uploaded by the user and the search image included in the website information and detecting the website information having a matching eigen value; and a storage section for storing the detected website information, the image included in the website information, and information regarding eigen values.

Abstract: A method and system for matching an unknown facial image of an individual with an image of an unknown twin using facial recognition techniques and human perception is disclosed herein. The invention provides a internet hosted system to find, compare, contrast and identify similar characteristics among two or more individuals using a digital camera, cellular telephone camera, wireless device for the purpose of returning information regarding similar faces to the user The system features classification of unknown facial images from a variety of internet accessible sources, including mobile phones, wireless camera-enabled devices, images obtained from digital cameras or scanners that are uploaded from PCs, third-party applications and databases. The method and system uses human perception techniques to weight the feature vectors.

Abstract: A content based image retrieval system that extracts images from a database of images by constructing a query set of features and displaying images that have a minimum dissimilarity metric from images in the database. The dissimilarity metric is a weighted summation of distances between features in the query set and features of the images in the database. The method is useful for image searching such as web-based image retrieval and facial recognition.

Abstract: An Internet infrastructure that supports searching of images by correlating a search image with that of plurality of images hosted in Internet based servers in selected categories, containing an image search server, and a web browser contained in a client device that supports displaying of the images. The image search server supports delivery of search result pages to a client device based upon a search string or search image, and contains images from a plurality of Internet based web hosting servers. The image search server also delivers characteristic analysis of an image to the client device upon request. The selection of images is done within selected categories and is based upon: (i) word match, that is, by selecting images, titles of which correspond to the search string; and (ii) image correlation, that is, by selecting images, image characteristics of which correlates to that of search image. The selection of images in the search result page also occurs on the basis of popularity.

Abstract: A method for generating representations of visual characteristics of images is presented. The method includes receiving search criteria. The criteria include images to be searched, query images and expected result sets, and a retrieval metric. The method identifies objects within each image and selectively generates a representation of visual characteristics of each image using descriptors from an inventory of descriptors in accordance with the retrieval metric. The method compares the representations of the query image to representations of the images to be searched and determines a search result. The search result is compared to the expected result. If the results do not match, the generating, comparing and determining steps are re-executed with reselected descriptors based on the search result and the retrieval metric. The re-execution continues in a trial-and-error approach until acceptable search results are achieved. When achieved, the method encodes the process for generating the representations.

Abstract: An image search method and system using face detection, begins with receiving a query submitted by a user. Next a query word is searched in the query from an image resource using an image search engine to obtain an initial image collection. Any faces are detected in each image in the initial image collection which has been searched. A search for the query word in a text surrounding each image having the face in the initial image collection is performed. A determination is made whether the query word indicates at least one person's name in the surrounding text matching the query word. An image an image in the initial image collection is returned to a user in which the face is included and the query word in the surrounding text indicates the person's name.
