  • Patent number: 8689055
Abstract: A tool for detecting potential impairment in an electronic device. The tool classifies the user input into various categories and determines some measurement, typically a rate of input per user or per time, for determining average use statistics of the electronic device. The tool then determines if a calculated measurement based on user inputs deviates from the average use statistics past some threshold level of deviation. In response to surpassing the threshold level of deviation, the tool identifies the electronic device as potentially impaired.

  • Patent number: 8667084
Abstract: In one embodiment, a management device receives one or more fate-sharing reports locally generated by one or more corresponding reporting nodes in a shared-media communication network, the fate-sharing reports indicating a degree of localized fate-sharing between one or more pairs of nodes local to the corresponding reporting nodes. The management device may then determine, globally from aggregating the fate-sharing reports, one or more fate-sharing groups indicating sets of nodes having a global degree of fate-sharing within the communication network. As such, the management device may then advertise the fate-sharing groups within the communication network, wherein nodes of the communication network are configured to select a plurality of next-hops that minimizes fate-sharing between the plurality of next-hops.

  • Patent number: 8661299
Abstract: The disclosed embodiments relate to a system for detecting abnormalities in time-series performance data obtained from machines that implement an online professional network. During operation, the system receives the time-series data, including throughput measurements and/or latency measurements for requests made to back-end systems associated with the online professional network. Next, the system attempts to detect abnormalities in the time-series data. If such an abnormality is detected, the system looks up associated system metrics, which are temporally proximate to the abnormality. The system then generates a notification about the abnormality along with the associated system metrics to facilitate determining a root cause of the abnormality.

  • Patent number: 8656226
Abstract: A system, method, and computer readable medium for statistical application-agnostic fault detection of multi-process applications. The computer readable medium includes computer-executable instructions for execution by a processing system. A multi-process application runs on a host. Interceptors collect statistical events and sends said events to a statistical fault detector. The statistical fault detector creates one or more distributions and compares recent statistical event data to historical statistical event data and uses deviation from historical norm for fault detection. The present invention detects faults both within the application and within the environment wherein the application executes, if conditions within the environment cause impaired application performance. The invention also teaches consensus fault detection and elimination of cascading fault notifications based on a hierarchy of events and event groups.

Abstract: At a time of operation verification of programs associated with an update of a shared program, information about a functionality necessary to be verified on a target program of operation verification can be presented. An influence degree calculation unit 102 calculates an influence degree of an update of a shared file to be updated for a shared file referring directly or indirectly to the shared file to be updated, on the basis of the reference relationships. A verification support information generation unit 103 detects a shared file having the influence degree which is equal to or higher than a predetermined value from among shared files referred to directly or indirectly by a verification target application file, on the basis of the reference relationships and the influence degree, and outputs information about a function call included in the detected shared file as information on a functionality necessary to be verified on the verification target application file.

Abstract: A method is provided for detecting when users are being adversely impacted by poor system performance. A system health indicator is determined that is based on the amount of work that is blocked waiting for each of a set of an external events and combined with a heuristic that is based on the number of users waiting for the work to complete. The system health indicator is compared to a threshold such that an alert is generated when the system health indicator crosses the threshold. However, the system health indicator is designed so that an alert is only generated when a significant user base is or will in the near future experience a problem with the system. Furthermore, the system health indicator is designed to vary smoothly to maintain its suitability for the application of predictive technology.

Abstract: The present invention determines the type of each piece of system information including a plurality of index values indicative of abnormality levels of a monitoring target device, as follows. The system information and identification information for the system information are sequentially received from the monitoring target device configured to sequentially output the system information together with the identification information for the system information. The piece of the received system information is compared with a predetermined determination criterion and thus determined to be of a particular type based on a result of the comparison. The determined type is output in association with the identification information. Input information indicative of a true type is accepted and stored in association with the identification information. The determination criterion is updated based on the piece of the system information and the information indicative of the true type.

Abstract: There is provided a failure analysis function capable of reducing the time required to resolve a failure in a piece of equipment to be monitored. When the failure analysis function senses that the status of a piece of equipment which had been abnormal has returned to normal, it displays, of failure analysis results, one based on an equipment abnormality which has been resolved in a GUI separately from the other analysis results. If a failure analysis result is derived based on a plurality of failure events, the failure analysis function displays the failure analysis result in the GUI separately from the other failure analysis results when all of the failure events are confirmed to be resolved (see FIG. 16).

Abstract: The aim of the present invention is that of establishing a fault-tolerant global time in a fault-tolerant communication system of a distributed real-time system. For this purpose, a fault-tolerant message switching unit is provided, which is composed of four independent switching units. These four independent switching units jointly establish a fault-tolerant time. The terminal systems are connected to a fault-tolerant message switching unit via two independent fail-silent communication channels, so that the clock synchronization and network connections are preserved, even if a part of the fault-tolerant switching unit or of a communication channel fails.

Abstract: An amount of a resource, such as bandwidth, needed to successfully accomplish a target Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is estimated in a data processing environment giving two or more physical or virtual data processing machines. Time-stamped samples of a usage metric for the resource are taken over a usage period. These samples are later accessed and time aligned to determine an average usage metric at defined intervals. An expected tolerance for RPO failure allows determining a first assumed amount of the resource available to achieve a target RPO that is less than might otherwise be expected. These steps can be repeated for other expected replication failure tolerances to allow a risk versus resource available trade off analysis.

Abstract: A content provider computing device that transmits content to receivers at scheduled air times receives information regarding conditions relating to the transmissions. The computing device also receives data regarding content that a receiver will record. The computing device evaluates the information and compares it with the data to determine that there is a risk of interrupted transmission. As a result, the computing device transmits the content to the receiver prior to the scheduled air time. The conditions may include weather conditions, power outage conditions, and/or any other conditions that may affect transmission. In various implementations, the computing device may include content controls prior to transmission that prevent the content from being accessed prior to specified times. In some cases, the content control may prevent all access. In other cases, the content control may prevent some kinds of access to the instance of content prior to particular times and allow others.

Abstract: A dynamic performance circuit adjustment system and method that flexibly adjusts the performance of a logic circuit. The dynamic performance circuit adjustment system and method facilitates flexible power conservation. In one exemplary implementation, a dynamic performance adjustment control circuit controls performance adjustments to a logic circuit (e.g., a processor) and adjusts support functions for the logic circuit. The logic circuit performs operational functions (e.g., processing) or tasks that have different performance requirements. For example, some tasks performed by the logic circuit are required to be performed in a relatively short duration of time and other tasks performed by logic circuit have relatively longer time limitations.
