Abstract: A system and method for fault management in a computer-based system are disclosed herein. A system includes a plurality of field replaceable units (“FRUs”) and fault management logic. The fault management logic is configured to collect error information from a plurality of components of the system. The logic stores, for each component identified as a possible cause of a detected fault, a record assigning one of two different component failure probability indications. The logic identifies a single of the plurality of FRUs that has failed based on the stored probability indications.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a first multiple spanning tree (MST) region configuration for an MST process may be maintained at a switch in a computer network, where the first configuration has a virtual local area network (VLAN)-to-instance (VI) mapping that maps each of one or more VLANs to one of one or more MST instances in the MST region. The switch may subsequently receive a second MST region configuration that has a different VI mapping than the first configuration, and may determine one or more VLANs of the second configuration that have a different VI mapping from the first configuration (“affected VLANs”). Accordingly, in response to a trigger to apply the second configuration at the switch, the affected VLANs are blocked for a delay, and the second configuration may be applied at the switch without restarting the MST process.

Abstract: Disclosed is a computer implemented method and apparatus for establishing a redundant channel from an application to a peer data processing system. The interrupt-driven hot standby program receives, through the operation of a data processing system, a communication channel status corresponding to an application. The application has a first channel using local access across a first physical conduit to a first switch. In addition the communication channel status is, in part, an interrupt. The interrupt-driven hot standby program determines whether the redundant channel is present. The redundant channel is configured to use a second physical conduit distinct from the first physical conduit for traffic of the application. Responding to a determination that the redundant channel is present, the interrupt-driven hot standby program determines whether the redundant channel is configured to use the second physical conduit as local access to a redundant switch, wherein the redundant switch is not the first switch.

Abstract: A data processing system and method of operation has a processor coupled to a cache. Cache control circuitry is coupled to the cache and performs error detection. A user programmable error action control register stores a control value for selecting a type of error action to be taken when a cache error is detected. A first value of the control value permits handling of a cache error that is transparent to the processor, and a second value permits handling of the cache error by taking an exception that is visible to the processor. Various alternate actions to a detected error, including error correction or cache line invalidation, may be taken in response to other values of the control value.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a solution for check-stopping firmware implemented virtual communication channels without disabling all firmware functions. In the solution, a virtual input/output subsystem of firmware can be selectively isolated from other portions of the firmware. This permits the virtual input/output subsystem to be disabled when severe errors occur involving virtual communication channels, without affecting other portions and functions of the firmware. Check-stopping the virtual I/O subsystem can be performed using existing hardware mechanisms for handling permanent errors including channel report words (CRW), channel control block (CHCB), and the like. The subsystem can be reactivated in response to a firmware patch which can be an automated or manual procedure.

Abstract: A storage system comprises a first storage device having a first plurality of hard disk drives and a first controller. The first controller stores data in the first plurality of hard disk drives by stripes. Each stripe includes M data and N parity data allocated to M+N hard disk drives of the first plurality of hard disk drives. A first hard disk drive includes data or parity data of both a first stripe of the stripes and a second stripe of the stripes, while a second hard disk drive includes data or parity data of only one of the first stripe or the second stripe. During data recovery involving failure of one of the first plurality of hard disk drives, the data in the failed hard disk drive is recovered for each stripe by calculation using data and parity data in other hard disk drives for each stripe.

Abstract: A method and system for repairing high speed serial links is provided. The system includes a first electronic components, connected to at least a second electronic component via at least one link. At least one of the first or second electronic components has a link controller. The link controller is configured to repair serial links by detecting a link error and mapping out individual lanes of a link where the link error is detected. The link controller resumes operation, i.e., transmission of data and continues to monitor the lanes for errors. If and when additional link errors occur, the link controller identifies the lanes in which the link error occurs and deactivates those lanes. The deactivated lane(s) can not be used in further transmissions which, in turn, reduces the occurrence of intermittent link errors.
