    Abstract: A circular wire with a circular cross section is wound on a coil reel. When a winding-form motor rotates a winding form, the circular wire is pulled and drawn from the coil reel. Rectangular forming rollers press the circular wire, so that a rectangular wire with a rectangular cross section is formed. The rectangular wire is directly wound on the winding form to be formed into a rectangular-wire coil. Because forming rectangular wire and winding on the winding form are carried out in a sequence of contiguous processes, a separate process for removing torsion set of the rectangular wire is unnecessary. The rectangular-wire coil can be formed from inexpensive circular material wire by a simple and low-cost apparatus. It is also possible and preferable to make dimensions and a shape of the rectangular wire variable by controlling clearance widths between the forming rollers and tension acting on the rectangular wire that has passed through the rollers.

The tip portion of a hoop material is cut and raised thereby forming a checking stepped-portion. The checking stepped-portion is caught by a checking pawl, so as to wind the hoop material around a core drum. After winding the hoop material around the outer periphery of the core drum, at least once, the checking pawl is retracted from the outer periphery of the core drum, thereby separating the checking pawl from the checking stepped-portion. The spiral wound gasket produced by the present invention exhibits an excellent sealing property. Moreover, it also has an excellent durability.

    Abstract: The characteristics of the wire are calculated, the wire having a cross-sectional shape which is substantially uniform along its length and having a length long enough in comparison with a diameter being deformed. The wire is divided into a plurality of elements with predetermined spacing along the length. When the wire is deformed, the shape of the wire after the deformation is determined. In the determined shape, a tangential stiffness equation using the element as a basis is calculated, and the calculated tangential stiffness equation is translated into a tangential stiffness equation using the whole of the wire as a basis. A global stiffness equation representing the whole wire is calculated from the tangential stiffness equation obtained by the translation. A load or a displacement produced in each portion of the wire is calculated from the global stiffness equation and the determined shape of the wire.

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for substantially automating the set-up process for a wire drawing machine, including the steps of attaching the end of a wire coil to a power-driven capstan, wrapping a sufficient number of wire wraps around the capstan, releasing the end of the wire from the capstan, and feeding the wire to a downstream compensation arm and production machine. Through the use of the present invention, the initialization or set-up process is substantially automated in that the operator simply needs to present wire to the machine, and initiate the process to automatically perform the set-up function and ultimately feed the wire to the downstream production machine. Moreover, due to greatly reduced operator interaction the machine is more reliably set up, and the operator is less likely to be caught or injured by the machine.

    Abstract: For economy of operation, as much as possible of the total length of a steel strip being rolled by a Steckel mill should be maintained at an acceptably high temperature. To this end, the trailing edge of the strip is drawn into the coiler furnace to the extent possible without losing driving control of the strip. This is enabled by providing within or in close proximity with the entrance/exit port of the coiler furnace a pair of preferably heated pinch rolls that drive the trailing edge of the strip (that has just completed a pass through the Steckel mill) into the coiler furnace as far as possible, leaving only a very short protruding portion of that trailing edge outside the coiler furnace. The strip may be left idle within the coiler furnace for as long a time as is required to bring the temperature of the wound strip up to a target operating temperature. Then the same pair of pinch rolls in or near the entrance/exit port of the coiler furnace drive the strip out of the furnace toward the Steckel mill.

The pivot flap, with its free end, is pivotable into the roller way and, vice versa, is pivotable away from the roller way by closing the housing. At least one flap part is provided to extend the pivot flap in the direction opposite to its free end. The end of the flap part facing away from the pivot axis is pivotable from the region of the mandrel to the housing and vice versa.
