A plant is further provided for producing a sheet metal blank.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for manufacturing steel bar (10) with intermittent smooth surface segments (11) and patterned relief segments (12). The method includes the steps of heating the bar (10) to a semiplastic state, rolling the semiplastic metal bar between rollers (30) having segments of patterned relief (33) around their respective circumferences separated by intermittent smooth segments (34). The rollers (30) rotate in registration with each other thereby imparting a corresponding intermittent pattern to the surface of the bar (10) along its length. The metal bar is then cooled to a solid state with the intermittent pattern intact on the surface of the bar. The metal bar (10) has intermittent segments of patterned relief (12) separated by intermittent smooth segments (11), the intermittent segments of patterned relief (12) being rolled onto the surface of the bar by passing the bar in a semiplastic state between rollers (30) having corresponding patterned relief (33) around their respective circumferences.

    Abstract: Flat metal strip of indeterminate length is apertured in a punch press having a flying die set to define a lengthwise succession of identical workpiece blanks connected by strap-like portions of the strip adjacent to its longitudinal edges. That press, each time it operates, makes two apertures that define respective end edges of a blank. The strip is pulled lengthwise through that press by roller forming apparatus which imparts a predetermined transverse profile to it and propels it through a flying shear press whereby each blank is severed from the rest of the strip. On a conveyor having two stretches bridged by the severed blank and moving faster than the strip the severed blank is carried to a folding press. There a ram rises from between the conveyor stretches, lifting the blank off of the conveyor and clamping it against a folding die.

The forming station includes adjustable rollers which permit adjustment of the space between the rollers. The method of the present invention comprises continuously feeding the sheet material through the punching, shearing, and forming stations. At the punching and shearing stations, the tools for punching and shearing the sheet material move in unison with the sheet material during the time that they are performing their punching and shearing operations, respectively.
