Patent number: 4807458Abstract: A roll block for rolling wire to final gauge in a high speed wire mill with a plurality of roll units alternatingly positioned at right angles to each other and behind each other, which are driven by two roll drive shafts running on both sides of the line of rolls parallel to it, includes a dividing gear unit for driving both drive shafts by a common drive motor. The individual roll units are connected to the roll drive shafts by miter wheel, bevel and/or other gear units. The gear ratios in the dividing gear unit on setting predetermined rotational speed ratios of the roll drive shafts lead to a predetermined series of caliber reductions for which the respective roll block is designed. Other materials and/or roll products require, if the gear ratios and rotational speeds are to be maintained constant, correspondingly changed dividing gear units. Such changes are no longer required when the dividing gear unit is a mechanical or hydraulic gearshift which produces different rotational speeds.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1986Date of Patent: February 28, 1989Assignee: Fried. Patent number: 4685320Abstract: A method of rolling steel rods or wires by grooveless rolls for reducing sectional areas of the rods or wires and achieving a stable rolling operation with high efficiency by limiting to less than a predetermined value the ratio of a long side to a short side of a cross-section of a blank material (having a rectangular cross-section) which has passed through each pair of grooveless rolls or limiting the ratio of the diameter of each pair of grooveless rolls to the gap therebetween. The method of rolling steel rods or wires by grooveless rolls also achieves high elongation efficiency to make stable the rolling operation by limiting the ratio of the diameter of each pair of grooveless rolls to the gap therebetween. The method uses a grooveless roll entry guide in the grooveless rolling so as to securely hold a blank material from entry to exit in a gap between the pair of grooveless rolls to eliminate overturns at the ends of the blank material and fins extending from the material due to the overturns.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1986Date of Patent: August 11, 1987Assignee: Kawasaki Steel CorporationInventors: Tadaaki Yanazawa, Teruaki Tanaka, Akio Noda, Ryo Takeda, Masataka Inoue

Patent number: 4587823Abstract: The apparatus and method make possible the semicontinuous rolling of an extensive range of product widths from no more than three widths of slabs. The leading end of a slab is forged or upset laterally between dies tapered to reduce its width at said end gradually to a value less than the desired width at the end of the pass. The slab is then passed through grooved vertical edging rolls to reduce its width and into the rolls of a roughing stand. The edge rolling tends to move the overfilled metal into the void created by the dies. As the trailing end of the slab approaches the roughing stand the edging rolls are backed off, allowing that end of the slab to fan out laterally. As the slab leaves the roughing stand it is rolled between grooved vertical edging rolls to reduce spread and bring the fanned-out trailing end to size. That operation causes the trailing end to bulge rearwardly at its center, so compensating for fishtailing.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1985Date of Patent: May 13, 1986Assignee: Blaw-Knox CorporationInventor: Werner W. Patent number: 4570472Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for controlling lateral unstable movement and camber of a strip being rolled in which the lateral displacement and the camber magnitude of the strip being rolled are directly detected. The lateral unstable movement is controlled by changing the right and left roll gaps of the horizontal rolling mill while the camber of the strip is corrected by changing the path line through the vertical rolling mill. As a result, the lateral unstable movement of the strip can be prevented so that the rolling operation can be carried out in a stable manner. In addition, the quality of the rolled strip can be improved and the yield can be increased.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1984Date of Patent: February 18, 1986Assignee: Ishikawajima-Harima Jukogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Hiroaki Kuwano

Patent number: 4532789Abstract: To reduce the width of slabs from a reheating furnace to the width required in a finishing rolling train, thereby making it possible to feed slabs of only one width, or only a few widths, into the reheating furnace, the invention proposes rolling the slab in a width-reducing roll train in which the slab is subjected to traction such that plastic deformation occurs between the roll sets. In particular the width-reducing roll train has only one set of thickness rolls and has one or more sets of width rolls, thereby minimizing the length of the roll train and consequently reducing the lengths at the ends of the slab which are not subjected to the traction.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1983Date of Patent: August 6, 1985Assignee: Estel Hoogovens B.V.Inventors: Hans Bruinsma, Frans Hollander, Rein L. Patent number: 4095447Abstract: The invention relates to the manufacture of seamless tubes by the method of tube rolling. According to the method of the present invention a hollow blank is deformed with regard to its wall thickness, the deformation being alternated at least twice with a reduction of the diameter of the blank by means ofa mandrel with alternating groups of grooves for deformation and groups for reduction. The mandrel diameter at the portions corresponding to the groups of reduction grooves is smaller than the mandrel diameter at the preceding portions corresponding to the groups of grooves designed for deformation of the hollow blank to change the wall thickness thereof. During the continuous rolling, this enables subsequent levelling out of bulges at the tube ends in grooves on the mandrel during the deformation of the blank wall. As a result, the range of rolled tubes is considerably enlarged with an increased production of small-diameter thick-walled tubes and large-diameter thin-walled tubes without bulged ends.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1976Date of Patent: June 20, 1978Inventors: Alexandr Andreevich Shevchenko, Gennady Ivanovich Gulyaev, Igor Alexandrovich Chekmarev, Petr Alexeevich Loskutov, Vitaly Nikolaevich Cherny, Valentin Nikolaevich Danchenko, Valery Georgievich Balakin, Evgeny Stepanovich Bondarenko, Vladimir Petrovich Bednyakov, Vladimir Mikhailovich Bokov, Fedor Terentievich Vinogradov
