  • Patent number: 4907438
Abstract: A plurality of roll stands are arranged along a planned passage line of a roll material. Each of the roll stands is provided with a pair of rolls each of which is formed, on the outer circumferential surface thereof, with a groove for rolling. The bottom surface formed on each roll is a circular arc in cross section. Both side surfaces of the groove are, in cross section, circular arcs of a radius larger than that of the bottom surface or segments of line. The roll material is transferred along the planned passage line is passed between the grooves on the pair of rolls in each roll stand. Thus, the roll material is rolled. In this case, even is the thickness of the roll material deviates, it can be rolled into a finished material of a prescribed dimension.

  • Patent number: 4807458
Abstract: A roll block for rolling wire to final gauge in a high speed wire mill with a plurality of roll units alternatingly positioned at right angles to each other and behind each other, which are driven by two roll drive shafts running on both sides of the line of rolls parallel to it, includes a dividing gear unit for driving both drive shafts by a common drive motor. The individual roll units are connected to the roll drive shafts by miter wheel, bevel and/or other gear units. The gear ratios in the dividing gear unit on setting predetermined rotational speed ratios of the roll drive shafts lead to a predetermined series of caliber reductions for which the respective roll block is designed. Other materials and/or roll products require, if the gear ratios and rotational speeds are to be maintained constant, correspondingly changed dividing gear units. Such changes are no longer required when the dividing gear unit is a mechanical or hydraulic gearshift which produces different rotational speeds.

  • Patent number: 4685320
Abstract: A method of rolling steel rods or wires by grooveless rolls for reducing sectional areas of the rods or wires and achieving a stable rolling operation with high efficiency by limiting to less than a predetermined value the ratio of a long side to a short side of a cross-section of a blank material (having a rectangular cross-section) which has passed through each pair of grooveless rolls or limiting the ratio of the diameter of each pair of grooveless rolls to the gap therebetween. The method of rolling steel rods or wires by grooveless rolls also achieves high elongation efficiency to make stable the rolling operation by limiting the ratio of the diameter of each pair of grooveless rolls to the gap therebetween. The method uses a grooveless roll entry guide in the grooveless rolling so as to securely hold a blank material from entry to exit in a gap between the pair of grooveless rolls to eliminate overturns at the ends of the blank material and fins extending from the material due to the overturns.

  • Patent number: 4587823
Abstract: The apparatus and method make possible the semicontinuous rolling of an extensive range of product widths from no more than three widths of slabs. The leading end of a slab is forged or upset laterally between dies tapered to reduce its width at said end gradually to a value less than the desired width at the end of the pass. The slab is then passed through grooved vertical edging rolls to reduce its width and into the rolls of a roughing stand. The edge rolling tends to move the overfilled metal into the void created by the dies. As the trailing end of the slab approaches the roughing stand the edging rolls are backed off, allowing that end of the slab to fan out laterally. As the slab leaves the roughing stand it is rolled between grooved vertical edging rolls to reduce spread and bring the fanned-out trailing end to size. That operation causes the trailing end to bulge rearwardly at its center, so compensating for fishtailing.

  • Patent number: 4095447
Abstract: The invention relates to the manufacture of seamless tubes by the method of tube rolling. According to the method of the present invention a hollow blank is deformed with regard to its wall thickness, the deformation being alternated at least twice with a reduction of the diameter of the blank by means ofa mandrel with alternating groups of grooves for deformation and groups for reduction. The mandrel diameter at the portions corresponding to the groups of reduction grooves is smaller than the mandrel diameter at the preceding portions corresponding to the groups of grooves designed for deformation of the hollow blank to change the wall thickness thereof. During the continuous rolling, this enables subsequent levelling out of bulges at the tube ends in grooves on the mandrel during the deformation of the blank wall. As a result, the range of rolled tubes is considerably enlarged with an increased production of small-diameter thick-walled tubes and large-diameter thin-walled tubes without bulged ends.

Abstract: The disclosure is directed to improvement in stretch reducing mills utilized in the manufacture of seamless and welded tubing. The stretch reducing mill is well known in its generalities, and the disclosure is directed to improvements in the construction of such mills in the interest of increasing the efficiency of operation and performance of the mill. The disclosure is directed in part to the construction of a multi-stand stretch reducing mill with improved arrangements for removably securing the individual mill stands in position. This includes a heavy, massive structural beam from which all of the individual mill stands are suspended and which additionally serves, when the mill is ready for operation, as a means for holding the mill stands in position. In the latter capacity, the beam contributes both in terms of its great weight and in terms of distributing clamping forces to the individual mill stands from a limited number of clamps.

  • Patent number: 3996781
Abstract: A rolling mill is provided for rolling wire, light sections and tubular products having a fixed rolling axis and a plurality of roll stands arranged directly one behind the other and each of which has two driven work rolls extending parallel to one another and transversely of the rolling direction, said work rolls of each stand defining at least two sizing passes only one of which is located on the rolling axis at one time while the other sizing passes of the stand are interchangeably located away from the rolling axis and act as stand-by passes.

  • Patent number: 3952570
Abstract: A sizing mill is provided for reducing tubes having a number of roll stands arranged one behind the other and in which the sizing pass of at least the first stand is so out of round that the first sizing pass can effect tube reduction over the whole range of external diameters of tubes to be rolled in any given rolling program.

  • Patent number: 3945234
Abstract: Alternative tandem arrangements of rolling mill stands are formed by supporting a plurality of separate and independently operable rolling mill stand assemblies upon one or more pedestals extending along a given passline. In one disclosed embodiment, a single pedestal extends along the passline and includes an angularly-shaped plate extending parallel to the passline and including inclined surfaces for carrying rolling mill assemblies at spaced locations. Auxiliary adapter pedestals are disclosed to position a rolling mill stand such that the rotational axes of its rolls are inclined in a different relation to the horizontal than when the mill stand is supported directly by the angularly-shaped plate on the pedestal. In a second embodiment, a plurality of side-by-side pedestals extend along a passline. Each pedestal defines a separate rolling mill support surface with the support surfaces of adjacent pedestals lying in intersecting support planes. An improved rolling mill stand assembly is disclosed.
