Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for generation and playback of supplemented videos which include interactive features. The supplemented video includes hotspots that allow a video viewer to interact with the video when the video viewer sees an object. The hotspots can be manually defined. Information regarding the object and the hotspot can be stored in a separate XML file. Furthermore, the present invention can be a marketplace where a desired object can be found by searching the XML file. The search results can list the supplemented videos which contain hotspots corresponding to the object and also the time in the supplemented video in which the object is found. The present invention can also aggregate data about the objects based on the playback of the supplemented videos and the video viewer's interaction with the supplemented videos.

Abstract: An embodiment of the disclosure provides a communication network having a plurality of end devices protected by multilayer switches that receive data packets in different formats for transmission to the end devices, translate received data packets to a common data format for inspection to determine if they pose a security threat, and if they do not pose a threat, forward the data packets to their end device destinations.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and media for generating and presenting supplemental content based on contextual information are provided. In some implementations, a method for presenting content to a user is provided, the method comprising: identifying a program based on first media data; identifying one or more keywords associated with the program; determining a popularity score associated with each of the one or more keywords; obtaining one or more properties associated with a particular keyword of the one or more keywords based on the popularity score associated with each keyword; generating supplemental content for the program based on the one or more properties; receiving a request for supplemental content and second media data from a computing device; and upon determining that the second media data corresponds to the program, causing the generated supplemental content to be presented by the computing device.

Abstract: A system and method delivers marketing messages based on location specific check-ins. This permits highly targeted communications directed at first entities such as persons, organizations, or businesses who are patrons of second entity locations which are typically businesses. Selection of first entities is based on detection of past or potential patronage of second entities through social media or other public digital content check-ins. Check-ins are analyzed to identify any second entity referred to and associating such reference to the author of the content. Second entities, such as a merchant or brand, may be explicitly determined from meta-data of source content, or implicitly through processing such as natural language analysis or association through a third entity. Second entities use such connections to deliver targeted marketing messages through a public social media profile of the first entity. Analytics may be used to track of check-in patterns and effectiveness of marketing campaigns.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described for authorizing access to network service based upon information obtained from a set-top box (STB) or other subscriber equipment associated with the user requesting access to the network service. The network service suitably contacts a subscriber device associated with the user via the network in response to a request for access that is received from the user. Information obtained from the subscriber device is processed to thereby determine if the user is authorized to use the service. If the user is authorized, then the service is provided via the network. Access to an online video stream, for example, can be conditioned upon the requesting user having an appropriate account with a cable, direct broadcast satellite (DBS) or other service that can be verified through contact with the user's STB or other subscriber equipment.

Abstract: A computer system in which augmentation content can be provided to a client device. A receiver is provided in a server for receiving a live television signal. A matching engine can then identify a segment of television, based on fingerprinting techniques and can determine a time delay between the start time of the segment of television and its identification. A content retrieval unit can then select augmentation content based on the identified segment of television and the time delay, and this can be output to a client device. In this way the augmentation content can be selected so that it maintains synchronization with live television.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for synchronizing a media presentation on a plurality of wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs). A media session may be replicated from a first WTRU onto a second WTRU. The first WTRU may initiate a bookmark procedure to create a bookmark to obtain synchronized playout with the second WTRU. A suggested presentation offset in the bookmark may specify an offset in time from a bookmark created time to a bookmark presentation time at the first WTRU. The first WTRU may establish an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) session with a packet switch stream (PSS) server. The media session may be replicated onto the second WTRU at a wall-clock time T, and the second WTRU may present an offset equal to T?bookmarkcreatedtime+bookmark offset?suggestedPresentationOffset from the beginning of a program in order to obtain synchronized media playout with the first WTRU.

Abstract: An Internet protocol television (IPTV) system is driven by a graphical user interface (GUI) controlled by an input device attached to an Internet access device that in turn connects to the GUI over IPTV connections. The input device may be a keyboard, smart phone, iPad, mouse, personal computer, laptop, touch screen, or other generic universal serial bus (USB), IEEE 1394 (FireWire), or other connected device. Connection between the input device and the GUI may be either wired (including, but not limited to USB, IEEE 1394, and Ethernet) or wireless (including, without limitation, infrared (IR), radio frequency, or other form of electromagnetic transmission). Regardless of connection method, the input device acts to operate and command the IPTV GUI so as to navigate and control the IPTV. By appropriate GUI implementations, a single input device may be configured to operate one or more windows on one or more display via IPTV connections.

Abstract: A method for receiving a measurement report includes: transmitting, by an apparatus including a coexistence manager (CM), a measurement request message for acquiring a measurement report from at least one device that uses a channel in a TV band to a coexistence enabler (CE); and receiving, by the apparatus, a measurement response message including the result of the measurement results from the CE. The measurement request message includes a first element indicating which of a primary detection, a detection of a device that uses the TV band, and a channel load measurement is requested. The measurement request message includes at least one of a start frequency, an end frequency, a channel list, and a measurement time related to the measurement, and the measurement report includes at least one selected from among the result of primary detection, the result of the detection of the device that uses the TV band.

Abstract: A system and method for collecting signals includes an IP network, a remote facility and a local collection facility in communication with the local collection facility through the IP network. The local collection facility receives channel signals, encoding the channel signals into respective IP signals, communicating the respective IP signals through an IP network to the remote facility. The remote facility controls an antenna switch at the local collection facility to communicate a first channel signal of the channel signals to a monitoring receiver circuit module. The local collection facility generates a monitoring signal at the monitoring receiver circuit module and communicates the monitoring signal through to a remote facility through the IP network.

Abstract: Search terms are derived automatically from images captured by a camera equipped cell phone, PDA, or other image capturing device, submitted to a search engine to obtain information of interest, and at least a portion of the resulting information is transmitted back locally to, or nearby, the device that captured the image.

Abstract: A system and method suitable for collecting local television signals includes a local collection facility having a plurality of primary receiver circuit modules with a first receiver circuit module and a back-up receiver module. The local collection facility includes the first receiver circuit module receiving and demodulating the first channel signal and forming a first IP signal. The first receiver has a first multicast group. The back-up receiver circuit module receives and demodulates the first channel signal and forming a second signal. The back-up receiver has a second multicast group. A remote facility is spaced apart from the local collection facility and communicates with the local collection facility through an IP backhaul. A primary decoder within the remote facility is communication with the IP backhaul and forms a decoded signal from the first IP signal. The primary decoder belongs to the first multi-cast group.

Abstract: The techniques related to providing a live program over the Internet are described. According to one aspect of the techniques, a data stream representing a live program is preprocessed to produce a plurality of substreams, each of the substreams comprising decimated samples of the data stream. The number of substreams is relatively large so that the bandwidth requirement for delivering one of the substreams is relatively low. With a group of seeding boxes receiving the substreams, a group of boxes in services are designated to receive the substreams from the seeding boxes, each of these boxes including the seeding boxes is able to support multiple outbound streams (e.g., greater than 2) so that there are enough data suppliers to service the ordering boxes or colonize more boxes to become the data suppliers. As a result, a live program can be timely serviced by peer boxes, significantly reducing the computation and bandwidth burdens on a server(s).

Abstract: Methods, devices, and computer program products for providing instant messaging in conjunction with an audiovisual, video, or audio program are provided. The methods include providing an audiovisual, video, or audio program to a user. Viewer/listener input is received requesting activation of a program-based instant messaging function. A viewer/listener identifier corresponding to the viewer/listener is associated with a program identifier that uniquely identifies the audiovisual, video, or audio program being provided to the user to thereby generate a program viewer/listener record. The program viewer/listener record is transmitted to an electronic database. A list of other users who are viewing or listening to the program in addition to the viewer/listener is acquired from the electronic database. The list of other users is transmitted to the viewer/listener.

Abstract: Real-time access by a requestor to surveillance video is conditionally pre-authorized dependent on the existence of at least one pre-specified automatically detectable condition, and recorded in a data processing system. A requestor subsequently requests real-time access to the surveillance video (e.g., as a result of an alarm), and if the pre-specified automatically detectable condition is met, access is automatically granted, i.e., without the need for manual intervention. An automatically detectable condition could, e.g., be an alarm condition detected by a sensor at the site of the video surveillance. Alternatively, it could be a locational proximity of the requestor to the site of the video surveillance. Alternatively, it could be a previously defined time interval.

Abstract: A system and method are described that provide television content broadcast system subscribers with convenient access to aggregated web feed content. In one embodiment, a television content broadcast system (20) maintains a database (21) linking one or more particular subscribers with one or more sources of web feed content. The television content broadcast system (20) downloads web feed content for a subscriber from the one or more sources associated with the subscriber, either at the user's request or to a cache (22). The television content broadcast system (20) sends the downloaded web feed content through a web content interface (30(2)) to a television receiver (41), or through a web content interface (30(3)) to a local memory (51) in a set-top box (50). In another embodiment, the television content broadcast subscribers also have accounts on a web content aggregation system (10).

Abstract: An approach is provided for simulating a connection to a head-end system to enable execution of content and features of a set-top box. A simulation platform stores a plurality of control data signals associated with a head-end system. In response to a determined loss of connectivity to the head-end system, the platform invokes a head-end simulation process using the control data signals, including timing information, dynamic data and channel map data.

Abstract: A streaming method for a streaming system includes receiving and analyzing a first streaming signal within a first frequency range, by a streaming device of the streaming system, from a program source; transmitting the first streaming signal to a first display device of the streaming system by the streaming device; and transmitting a second streaming signal within the first frequency range to a second display device of the streaming system when the second display device generates an instruction signal.

Abstract: A system and method for creating and managing custom media channels within an Interactive Digital Program Guide (IDPG) of a device having a set-top box function associated with a cable or satellite television network. In general, a user interacts with the set-top box function to define a custom media channel. The custom media channel may be defined by a channel name and user preferences. Once the custom media channel is defined, an Internet search is performed based on the user preferences in order to identify media presentations for the custom media channel. Thereafter, when a user selects the custom media channel via the IDPG, the media presentations are played in a substantially continuous stream in either a predetermined or random sequence.

Abstract: A system for managing delivery of content from multiple platforms maintains data for various video channels. Some of the video channels are television channels, while others are over-the-top (OTT) video content sources such as video streaming websites. The system includes a package generation module by which a service provider may define a package of both traditional and OTT channels to offer to subscribers in a unified programming interface. When a user uses the interface to select a set of video channels, the system compiles the set of the video channels in a subscriber package of both television and OTT channels. The system assigns a name to the subscriber package, and it stores the defined package and name, along with other information about the package, in a data storage facility for offering to a subscriber of content from the service provider.

Abstract: Computer program products, methods, systems, apparatus, and computing entities are provided for providing an enhanced media presentation. In one embodiment, an enhanced media presentation is provided. To provide the enhanced media presentation, one or more content items associated with subject matter associated with a segment of an enhanced media presentation are identified. Each content item may be associated with at least one uniform resource identifier. Then, a content object based at least in part on at least one content item is created. The content object is an abstract representation of the content item. The content object can be associated with the segment and provided for simultaneous displayed simultaneously with at least a portion of the segment.

Abstract: A media server receives a first request to transmit the media program to the first device and streams the media program to the first device. The method monitors the streaming of the media program to the first device to generate media program streaming information and transmits the media program streaming information to a media program provider. A second request is received to resume transmission of the media program from a second device where the request includes a temporal location within the media program that was received from the media program provider. The media program provider determined the temporal location from the streaming information transmitted from the media server to the media program provider. The media server resumes transmission of the media program to the second device from the temporal location received from the media program provider.

Abstract: An intercepting proxy server processes traffic between an enterprise user and a cloud application. The intercepting proxy server provides interception of real data elements in communications from the enterprise to the cloud and replacing them with obfuscating tokens which are randomly generated. To the cloud application real data are only visible as tokens. Tokens included in results returned from the cloud, are intercepted by the intercepting proxy server, and replaced with the corresponding real data elements. The obfuscating tokens are not computationally related to the original sensitive value. Each intercepted real data element is stored in a local persistent storage layer, and indexed by the corresponding obfuscating token, allowing the real data element to be retrieved when the token is returned from the cloud, for delivery to the user.

Abstract: A process for providing a print-augmented broadcast signal for transmission to one or more convention broadcast receiver includes receiving a broadcast signal comprising (i) standard content for a particular broadcast program and (ii) a non-content portion. Supplemental content which is associated with the standard content of the particular broadcast program is additionally received. Next, the supplemental content is combined onto the non-content portion of the broadcast signal to form a print-augmented broadcast signal, the print-augmented broadcast signal comprising the standard content, which can be rendered on a conventional broadcast receiver, and the supplemental content, which is printable on-demand at a destination conventional broadcast receiver substantially concurrently with the rendering of the standard content.

Abstract: Systems and methods are presented that permit an individual to share digital video between video devices using a cable television system. A first video device streams digital video to a cable headend, which transcodes it and stitches it with other video content, such as a menuing system. The headend then transmits the digital video to a second video device, such as a set top box, for display. The data stream may be controlled using a standard set top box remote control, and the system may be used without purchasing additional hardware or software, or configuring a wireless local area network.

Abstract: A computer implemented method for organizing and delivering audio-visual online content, having: on a computing device having one or more processors and a memory storing one or more programs for execution by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for: developing a dayparting ratio of the audio-visual online content based on information extracted from an electronic programming guide, and modifying the dayparting ratio of the audio-visual online content based on information extracted from a publicly available internet-based content provider. The method may also include modifying the dayparting ratio of the audio-visual online content based on information extracted from a password-protected internet-based content provider. The method may also include delivering the audio-visual online content based on the modified dayparting ratio. Also, a computer system including one or more processors and memory to store one or more programs including the instructions.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for hybrid transmission over a broadcast network and a broadband network, comprising the steps of: providing information on the broadcast content relating to a first content during the viewing the first content of the broadband network; and, if the related broadcast content is selected, providing the related broadcast content to a user over the broadcast network. The user may receive the broadcast content corresponding to relevant specific content over the broadcast network and view the received broadcast content during the viewing of specific VOD content in the broadcast network.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided to implement a technique for providing supplemental information and interactive features for content, such as a movie. In one implementation, a content provider builds a package of information and interactive features (“interactive extras”) using a defined structure and API (application programming interface). The content provider gives the package of extras to several distributors (or provides access to some or all of the package through a network resource). Each distributor uses the package in the distributor's content distribution platform or system by conforming to the API for the package. In this way, the content provider can provide the same package of extras to multiple distributors that may have incompatible platforms without having to build custom packages for each platform. This allows the content provider to build the package once and also provides a more consistent experience across the distributor services.

Abstract: Certain aspects of an apparatus and method for Internet protocol (IP) video signal synchronization may include a server or switching center. The method for synchronized transmission of content may include receiving a plurality of content streams and a request to switch the transmission of content. The plurality of content streams may be received from a plurality of sources. The request to switch may switch the transmission of content from a first content stream to a second content stream of the received plurality of content streams. A time delay may be determined to be added to the transmission of content to compensate for a propagation delay of the received request and a processing delay to process the received request.

Abstract: A request to establish a switched digital video session with high-definition content is received from a subscriber of a video content network offering a switched digital video service. A determination is made that the subscriber only has capability of viewing standard definition content. Responsive to the request and the determination, the subscriber, in the session, is provided a signal with a standard definition version of the requested high-definition content. An exemplary switched digital video control apparatus and an exemplary system are also disclosed.

Upon receiving user input from a client device to the web browser at the service center, streaming interactive video web page is transmitted to the client device with substantially no detectable latency.

Abstract: A computer system includes a display that displays an electronic program guide to a user. A data storage unit includes keywords related to television shows currently being broadcast. A server device is configured to retrieve real-time data related to a person of interest from the internet by monitoring messages that they generate. The server device can then identify one or more matches between the retrieved data and the stored keywords, and can output a modified electronic program guide including an indication of matching keywords. This can allow an electronic program guide to include an inference of the television show that a person of interest is likely to be watching or talking about online.
