  • Patent number: 9186849
Abstract: A method and system for assisting in the manufacture of composite parts such as those used for various high-strength assemblies such as aircraft wings, vertical stabilizers, racing car shells, boat hulls, and other parts which are required to have a very high strength to weight ratio. The system uses laser technology to measure the resultant surfaces of a first manufactured composite part. A computer system analyzes and compares the as-built dimensions with the required production specifications. Supplemental composite filler plies are designed including shape and dimensions. These plies are nested together into a single composite sheet and manufactured to minimize wasted material. The plies are then cut out and applied to the first part guided by a laser projection system for locating the plies on the part. The part is then re-cured. The final assembly is then re-measured for compliance with production dimensions.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for combining pressure information from pressure sensors, motion information from dead reckoning or other motion sensors, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and geomagnetic sensors, and temperature information from temperature sensors, to separate a change in altitude from a change in environmental pressure or temperature. A change in measured pressure without any motion or change in temperature must be a weather-related barometric pressure change. If there is an associated temperature change, but no motion, and the rate of change is too fast for a normal weather change, the measured change represents a change in sensitivity of the pressure sensor with temperature, and the sensor calibration can be adjusted. A rapid change in pressure, associated with horizontal motion, but no measurable vertical motion represents a movement into a different pressure environment. Only changes in pressure that are associated with measurable vertical motion are true changes in altitude.

Abstract: A system and method for correcting surface height measurements for optical aberration is provided. Heights determined by an autofocus tool, which may depend on surface feature angles in a focus region of interest (ROI) and on the ROI location in the field of view, are corrected based on a novel error calibration. Error calibration data includes height corrections for different feature angles in images, and for multiple locations in a field of view. Height corrections are determined by weighting and combining the angle dependent error calibration data, e.g., based on a gradient (edge) angle distribution determined in the ROIs. When Z-heights are determined for multiple ROIs in a field of view, storage of image data from particular images of a global image stack may be efficiently controlled based on determining early in processing whether a particular image is a sufficiently focused “near-peak” focused image or not.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention include a calibration and measurement system designed primarily for use in the rapid evaluation and characterization of open or visible wounds in patients. The invention in a preferred embodiment comprises a set of colored concentric rings, typically constructed of paper or synthetic paper. The practitioner removes only as many rings, from the center outward, until the entire wound is visible within the open aperture at the center of the remaining rings. The area dimensions of the wound are then read out from the size of the inner remaining ring. Photography optionally records the wound appearance and size. A related system is developed for linear dimensioning of wounds. This embodiment is also designed to standardize the color scheme for accurate photography wound description. • Patent number: 7591077
Abstract: A coordinate measuring machine to determine the coordinates of a number of points on the surface of a measured object, includes a support beam, supporting a measuring head over the surface of a support table that supports the test object. The measuring machine is constructed from separately manufactured units, which include at least a support beam, a measurement trolley and a measurement head. The support beam supports the measurement trolley, which is displaceable along the support beam. The measurement trolley in turn supports the measurement head. The beam, head and trolley are individually calibrated, and the trolley includes both mechanical and electrical attachment points for the head and the beam, where the mechanical attachment points are designed such that no geometric deformation can take place when these units are joined together such that the units, which have been individually manufactured, can be simply joined to the coordinate measuring machine.

  • Patent number: 7578165
Abstract: Measurement devices and methods for measuring balloon catheters are provided. Embodiments enable measuring the outer dimensions and burst pressure of a balloon catheter. The measurement apparatus can measure a balloon catheter in ambient air or a balloon catheter submerged in a heated water bath. In ambient air, an axial drive mechanism translates the balloon catheter in an axial direction and a rotary drive mechanism rotates the balloon catheter while a measurement device is used to measure balloon catheter dimensions. In a water tank, an axial drive mechanism translates the balloon catheter in an axial direction while a measurement device is used to measure the burst pressure of the balloon catheter. The devices and methods can utilize a laser micrometer in order to provide such measurements. A control unit provides a user interface and is capable of displaying real time data during the measurement process.

  • Patent number: 7575371
Abstract: A thermometer and extensometer for cables and conductors is described. The travel time of one or more acoustic signals along a conductor is used to determine the temperature along the conductor and the length of the conductor. The acoustic frequency is selected to minimize temporal dispersion of the propagating acoustic energy. The technique can be used to measure the temperature and sag of an overhead power line, the temperature of the windings in a transformer, or the temperature of the central conductor in a coaxial power cable.

  • Patent number: 7568373
Abstract: A method of calibrating an articulating probe head comprising the steps of measuring an artefact of known dimensions with the workpiece sensing probe mounted on the articulating probe head, in which the articulating probe head is unlocked. An error functional map is generated corresponding to the difference between the measured and known dimensions of the artefact. Subsequent workpieces are measured with the articulating probe head unlocked and the corresponding correction applied. The true dimensions of the artefact may be determined by measuring it with a probe mounted on an articulating probe head in which the axes of the articulating probe head are locked. A mechanical lock is provided to lock the axes of the articulating probe head.

The method includes supporting a calibration device having a central axis and a plurality of regions which are rotationally symmetric about the axis. The method further includes scanning the device with an array of spaced planes of radiation so that the device occludes each of the planes of radiation at spaced locations along the central axis to create a corresponding array of unobstructed planar portions of the planes of radiation. Each of the unobstructed planar portions contains an amount of radiation which is representative of a respective geometric dimension of the device. The method still further includes measuring the amount of radiation present in each of the unobstructed planar portions to obtain measurement signals. The method includes processing the measurement signals to obtain calibration data for calibrating the system.
