Publication number: 20120103075Abstract: Described are a method and system for diluting a sample in a liquid chromatography system. A sample flowing at a first flow rate is combined for a predetermined time with a diluent flowing at a second flow rate to generate a volume of diluted sample. The diluted sample has a dilution ratio determined according to the two flow rates. A portion of the volume is loaded into a sample loop of an injection valve and subsequently injected into a mobile phase flowing to a chromatography column. The method eliminates the need to have a technician available to perform dilutions or to transfer the sample to a remote location for dilution. Advantageously, manufacturing or processing downtime to perform the dilution is not required and the amount of sample flowing to waste is reduced.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 17, 2010Publication date: May 3, 2012Applicant: WATERS TECHNOLOGIES CORPORATIONInventors: Sylvain Cormier, Richard W. Patent number: 8104330Abstract: In order to obtain a temperature gradient elution method which is rapid and accurate, a mobile phase (1) is supplied through two mobile-phase flow channels (2a) and (2b), mixed together, and introduced into the column (15) while the column (15) is made adiabatic. In this operation, the temperature of the mobile phase in one mobile-phase flow channel, i.e., the channel (2a), is regulated to a constant temperature higher than the upper limit of the target temperature range to be obtained in the column (15), while the temperature of the mobile phase in the other mobile-phase flow channel, i.e., the channel (2b), is regulated to a constant temperature lower than the lower limit of the target temperature range in the column (15). By controlling the flow rates in the two mobile-phase flow channels (2a) and (2b), the proportion in which these mobile-phase portions are mixed is changed with time to thereby change the temperature of the mobile phase in the column (15) with time.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2006Date of Patent: January 31, 2012Assignee: Shimadzu CorporationInventors: Morimasa Hayashi, Yoshihiro Hayakawa

Patent number: 7937990Abstract: A separation column and a liquid chromatograph using the separation column, which are capable of carrying out a high-speed analysis under high pressure and without a reduction in separation performance of the separation column. In the separation column, a sample and a mobile phase are introduced into a packing material. The chromatograph has a covering member for covering an outer surface of the packing material and a supporting member having the packing material covered with the covering member inserted therein, wherein the level of pressure generated within a gap located between the covering member and the supporting member on the outflow side of the gap, where the fluid-flows out of the gap, is lower than that of pressure generated within the gap on the inflow side of the gap, where the fluid is introduced.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2008Date of Patent: May 10, 2011Assignee: Hitachi High-Technologies CorporationInventors: Yoshihiro Nagaoka, Masahito Ito
