Publication number: 20040069086Abstract: To render a gear arrangement for a transmission as quiet as possible but nevertheless able to handle heavy loads, a first gear (1) made of a first material and a second gear (2) made of a second material sit loosely next to one another on a common shaft (4). The elasticity of the first gear (1), preferably made of plastic, is chosen to be greater than that of the second gear (2), preferably made of metal, while the strength of the second gear (2) is chosen to be greater than that of the first gear (1). Because the second gear (2) preferably exhibits a slightly smaller toothing than the first gear (1), only the first gear (1), while having the same modulus, comes into engagement with another gear in normal operation. As the load increases, the first gear (1) made of plastic yields in the elastic range so that now the second gear (2) made of metal also comes into engagement in order to accept the forces occurring and thereby protect the first gear (1) against overloading and fracture.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 25, 2003Publication date: April 15, 2004Inventor: Helmut Thoma

Under abnormal conditions such as when an abrupt stop occurs, the thermoplastic portions of the gear teeth are compressed and the higher torque forces resulting from the abnormal condition are absorbed by the metal gear teeth portions.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1997Date of Patent: December 29, 1998Assignee: Briggs & Stratton CorporationInventor: John D. Patent number: 5337626Abstract: A laminated gear and a method of forming the laminated gear are disclosed. The method comprises punching a central hole and a circular array of closely adjacent perforations in a generally planar sheet. The array defines an interior portion having the outline of the gear, and a selvedge portion disposed outboard the perforations. The central hole and the perforations are progressively stamped until they have burnished faces perpendicular to the sides of the sheet. Web portions interconnecting the interior and selvedge portions are then broken to separate the gear from the sheet. A projection and corresponding recess are then stamped on the opposite sides of the gear. A predetermined number of gears are queued and finally arranged into an assembly by frictionally nesting the projections and corresponding recesses. The central holes are thereby aligned to form a bore adapted to be press fit onto a camshaft or crankshaft. The laminated gear formed by this method is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1993Date of Patent: August 16, 1994Assignee: Ryobi Outdoor Products, Inc.Inventors: Robert G. Patent number: 4947700Abstract: This invention relates to a unique transmission system for applying torque from an engine flywheel to the drive train of an automotive vehicle including a long travel viscous damped torsional damper driven by the flywheel and coupled to a continuously variable transmission which in turn is coupled to a wet drive clutch, the output of which is connected to an output counter shaft for the automotive drive train. An important part of the unique combination is the long travel viscous damped torsional damper of the invention which includes an enclosed, effectively sealed housing contains input and output members coupled through a plurality of series parallel spring sets and immersed in a viscous medium to provide effective viscous damping matched to the effective spring rate of the mechanical damping system to accommodate both transient and steady-state vibrational torques. The damper is especially useful with the continuously variable transmission but is useful in other applications as well.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1988Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: Borg-Warner Automotive, Inc.Inventors: John M. Patent number: 4838107Abstract: A rotary drive element for damping torsional vibration comprises an outer part (1) and an inner part (2) defining an annular space therebetween, containing a plurality of interleaved plates and a viscous fluid. The plates comprise a set of first plates (3) having internal teeth (6') which engage teeth (8) on the inner part (2) of the element substantially without circumferential clearance, and outer teeth (5) which engage teeth (7) in the outer part (1) with a circumferential clearance. The second set of plates has inner teeth which engage the teeth of the inner part with a circumferential clearance, and outer teeth which engage the teeth in the outer part (1) without a circumferential clearance. Thus the inner and outer parts are able to move angularly relative to one another according to the circumferential teeth clearances, which movement is damped by the viscous fluid between the plates. The drive element may be incorporated in a gear wheel for a vehicle transmission, or a clutch driven plate.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1987Date of Patent: June 13, 1989Assignee: Uni-Cardan AktiengesellschaftInventor: Gert Herrmann
