  • Patent number: 5787766
Abstract: The invention relates to a torque-splitting gear having a driving shaft and axis-parallel driven pinion shafts running in the same sense which are coupled with each other by toothed wheels. The gear is to be designed in such a way that it can be built up in different dimensions and for different powers while maintaining a great number of its components without change. The coupling between the driving shaft and the main driving toothed wheels is realized by a herringbone gearing. For transmitting great torques the main driving toothed wheels and the pinions on the driven pinion shafts are additionally coupled with each other via intermediate pinions and hollow wheels.

  • Patent number: 5725453
Abstract: A power transfer system for a four-wheel drive vehicle is having a part-time transfer case with its input angled relative to its outputs by means of a constant velocity (CV) universal joint. More specifically, the transfer case input includes a first rotary member adapted to be rotatably driven about the rotary axis of the transmission output shaft, a second rotary member supported for rotation about a second rotary axis that is angled relative to the first rotary axis, and a CV joint interconnecting the first and second rotary members. The transfer case outputs include a pair of rotary output members supported for relative rotation about a common third rotary axis that is offset from the second rotary axis. A torque transfer arrangement is provided for transferring torque from the transfer case input to its outputs. As such, the CV joint allows the transfer case to be angulated so that reduced departure angles are achieved with respect to the prop shaft connections.

  • Patent number: 5711389
Abstract: Tandem rear axle assembly for motor vehicles, especially trucks. The tandem rear axle assembly herein does not employ an inter-axle differential. Instead, torque is transmitted from a motor drive shaft to a longitudinally extending through shaft, which may drive a differential for a rearward rear axle. A forward rear axle is selectively engaged or disengaged, as driving conditions require, by a disk-type friction clutch or clutch pack. The clutch pack may be actuated by an actuator assembly which includes sensors for determining the rotational speeds of the two rear axles, and a computer controlled unit or signal generator for generating an output signal when the difference in rotational exceeds a predetermined limit. The output signal actuates, for example, by air pressure, a piston which compresses the clutch pack so as to engage the clutch and thereby transmit torque to both the forward and rearward rear axles simultaneously. The clutch may be manually actuated if desired.

  • Patent number: 5697263
Abstract: A device, having a planetary gear and a single motor, in use for switching and transmitting a driving force of the motor to any one of station gears and for driving each station gear in both rotational directions. The operation of locking levers for preventing a planetary gear from revolving around a sun gear is controlled by a cam. The cam is actuated by a driving force of the motor. A spring frictionally connecting the cam and an output shaft of a speed reduction system is interposed therebetween, and a magnet is disposed so as to restrict the movement of the cam when the motor rotates. A sun gear is connected with the output shaft of the speed reduction system with a "play" or gap in order that the rotation of the sun gear is reversed behind time corresponding to the play when the rotation of the motor is reversed, thus making it possible to start actuating the cam earlier than the sun gear for making sure that the locking levers are shifted.

  • Patent number: 5423726
Abstract: A plural output differential drive system provides plural outputs that are differentially related to each other. Four or more output shafts are driven from a single input shaft, each output shaft being differentially linked with the other output shafts. The entire differential drive arrangement may be expanded to any number of outputs, and is contained within a single housing. The output shafts of the plural output differential will transfer power in applications wherein a predetermined distribution of torque is required at four or more outputs, irrespective of their speeds. All the outputs are coupled as a series of all epicyclic differentiating mechanisms, or a series of epicyclic and bevel differentiating mechanisms. N outputs are achieved by introducing multiple epicyclic gear mechanisms. The input shaft may be arranged to be coaxial with the output shafts, or may be at any other angle, including orthogonal thereto.

  • Patent number: 5386742
Abstract: A transaxle assembly for small-scaled, self-propelled machines of a relatively simple structure includes an axle-locking mechanism which is housed in an axle casing (19). The locking mechanism comprises left and right rotors (47L, 47R), each having teeth (47a) thereon and mounted fixedly on left and right wheel axles (20L, 20R), and left and right locking members (49L, 49R) each having at least one pawl (49a) engageable with the teeth. The locking members are mounted on a control shaft (50), which extends parallel to the wheel axles, such that these members are moved rotationally by a rotational displacement of the control shaft so as to cause locking engagement between the pawls and teeth. A torque spring (53) is preferably employed for causing lock-operating movement of the locking member by the control shaft. The transaxle and locking mechanism can be handled as a unit in a self-propelled machine so that assembling of the machine is made easier.
