  • Patent number: 4537085
Abstract: Apparatus for lifting a load through an arc includes two pivotally connected, overlapping housings which are pivoted relative to each other by a fluid operated piston disposed between the housings. The housings have overlapping sides provided with oppositely inclined cam tracks. Rollers driven by the piston and captured within the cam tracks transmit force between the sidewalls of the housings, thereby causing the housings to pivot relative to each other. One of the housings is adapted to have the load mounted thereon.

  • Patent number: 4419905
Abstract: A collar on the drive shaft of a bicycle pedal hub is mounted with means to displace the collar longitudinally along the shaft. The displacement is accomplished by a limited reverse rotation of the pedals and shaft. The direction of the displacement may be in either longitudinal direction and depends upon the position of the collar before the reverse rotation of the pedals and shaft. Displacement of the collar causes a bicycle transmission to shift gears.

  • Patent number: 4406933
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a novel apparatus for use with an electric limit switch. The apparatus is a neutral position limit switch lever head, or multiple position off-center to center movement translator, for use with an operator having first and second movable elements and a receiver having a movable member. The apparatus comprises a support cover, a linear actuator in contact with the movable member of the receiver and a tri-lobe roller follower in contact with the linear actuator and the two movable elements of the operator. The support cover retains the linear actuator in the center of the support cover and also holds the tri-lobe roller follower in position. The novel apparatus converts the off-center movement of the movable elements of the operator to a linear center movement of the linear actuator.

  • Patent number: 4385524
Abstract: A mechanism is provided for oscillating a shake table or other member at high accelerations but over short distances. The mechanism includes a group of pad devices supporting the shake table on a base, with each pad device including upper and lower curved pads respectively received in sockets of the table and base and with the pads able to slide on one another. However, the centers of curvature of the two pads are spaced from one another, so that when a driver rotates the lower pad in its socket, causing the upper pad to rotate in its corresponding socket and slide on the lower pad, the upper pad is displaced vertically by a slight amount. Thus, an actuating device that applies a moderate force to the lower pad to rotate it, therefor applies a much greater vertical force to the table, to accelerate it at a high level. The pad devices also can support a large static loading on the table as where it lies in a centrifuge.

  • Patent number: 4366722
Abstract: A connector for coupling the drive shaft of a reversible motor to a linear actuator, such as an actuator which carries a magnetic read-write head of a magnetic disk drive system. The actuator has a generally flat side plate at one side of the drive shaft of the motor. A flexible, metallic band is wrapped around the drive shaft and one end of the band is secured to one end of the side plate. The opposite end of the band extends through a slot in the band and is doubled upon itself near its opposite end to form a U-shaped recess near the opposite end of the side plate. A bore extends into the opposite end of the plate and receives a pin which is biased outwardly by a spring, and the outer end of the pin engages a cylindrical cross bar which bears against the inner surface of the band portion which forms the U-shaped recess. The opposite end of the band is secured to the side plate. The spring, pin and bar exert a tension force on the band to prevent backlash and to compensate for ambient temperature variations.

Abstract: Self steering apparatus for a boat comprising a motion transfer apparatus for converting pivotal movement of a wind vane into rotational movement of a rudder. The latter is located in a support which is pivotable about the fore and aft axis of the boat. A rotatable connection is provided between a control arm arranged for movement with the vane and a rudder arm arranged for movement with the rudder, such that, when movement of the vane is initiated, there is resultant movement of the rudder arm about the fore and aft axis with movement of the rudder about its axis, and subsequent movement by the water of the rudder support about the fore and aft axis, and movement of the control arm is effected on initial movement of the rudder about its axis but does not result from movement of the rudder support about the fore and aft axis. Lines transmit movement of the rudder support about the fore and aft axis to the main rudder or tiller of the boat.

The pump jack assembly includes a walking beam pivotally mounted for free swinging motion on a Sampson post. The walking beam includes a fixed counterweight mounted on one end and a horsehead mounted on the opposite end. The walking beam is driven in up-and-down pumping motion by a pair of balance weights which are coupled for coordinated reciprocal movement along the walking beam. The balance weights are linked together for concurrent movement and are driven by a hydraulic cylinder mounted on the counterweight end of the walking beam. The weights are so positioned that while one weight is being raised by the hydraulic cylinder, the other weight is falling due to gravity. Thus the weights help each other and greatly reduce the power requirement. The downward stroke of each end of the walking beam is limited by saddle weights which are pivotally coupled to the walking beam on opposite sides of the Sampson post.
