Patent number: 6723387Abstract: A thermal spray method for the fabrication of ceramic/metal and ceramic/ceramic hardcoating for wear applications. The method makes use of feedstock powder, composed of micron-scale aggregates of hard phase material particles that are either mixed or coated with a readily fusible nano-scale binder phase material. Thus, during thermal spraying, the nanostructured material undergoes rapid melting while the aggregated material is heated but not necessarily melted. A dense coating is formed when the molten nano-material fills the available pore spaces between the heated and softened aggregates, providing a strong and tough matrix for the consolidated material. Optimal wear properties are achieved when the volume fraction of aggregated particles is high, typically in the range of 0.5-0.9. Aggregated material may be composed of one, two or more particles of difference sizes and/or compositions, with particle size distribution that gives high packing density for the hard phase.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2002Date of Patent: April 20, 2004Assignee: Rutgers UniversityInventors: Bernard H. Publication number: 20040060390Abstract: A method of production of large Ingots of neutron attenuating composites using a vacuum-bellows system allows for large cross-sectional shapes to be extruded and rolled. This method uses a vacuum-bellows technology which allows the manufacturing of large 8-16 inch diameter ingots (50-450 lbs. each). A variety of primary metal matrix materials can be used in this technology. High specific strength and stiffness can be achieved because the technology allows for final densities of 99% and higher. The vacuum-bellows technology allows metals and ceramics to blend and mesh together at compression pressures of 800 tons with elevated temperatures. The controlled compression movement allows for any oxide layer, on the metal, to be broken up and consolidated with the chosen ceramic particulate. One application is to blend boron-rich ceramics and high purity (99.5-99.99%) aluminum particulates together and produce a large ingot using this vacuum-bellows technology.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 9, 2002Publication date: April 1, 2004Inventor: Robin A. Patent number: 6709739Abstract: A plurality of closed metal cells is provided. Each cell encapulates a fluid or a fluid-like filler with a metal skin or cell wall. The closed cells are joined into an aggregate arrangement to form a composite material in which the bonded cell walls form a continuous metal matrix. The cell walls and the encapulated cell filler fluid or fluid-like filler provide controllable stiffness and strength as well as vibration-damping and shock-absorbing characteristics to the material. The resulting closed cell metal composite finds many advantages uses including use as a prosthetic device, a casting, or an automotive component. The component material is elastically compliant or stiff, depending on the design, as well as lightweight and resistant to buckling and crushing. Patent number: 6303235Abstract: There is provided a copper-based sliding alloy excellent in wear resistance and anti-seizure property. A phase of 2 to 30 wt. % lead is dispersed in the copper alloy. This lead phase contains 0.1 to 6 vol. % hard particles such as SiC, SiO2, Si3N4, Al2O3, TiC, WC and TiN having an average particle size of 5 to 25 &mgr;m. Because hard particles are included in the lead phase, wear resistance is excellent and anti-seizure property is improved. The lead phase, which is soft, serves as a cushion and the attack on a mating member by hard particles is reduced. Further, the falling-off of lead is minimized because the lead phase also includes the hard particles.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1999Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignees: Daido Metal Company Ltd., Kayaba Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Naohisa Kawakami, Tsukimitsu Higuchi, Yoshiaki Sato, Takayuki Shibayama, Keizo Mizuno, Kenji Yamanouchi

Patent number: 6150048Abstract: Disclosed are a metallic interconnection material for solid oxide fuel cells and a preparation method thereof. The metallic interconnection material has two fine microstructural phases in which 5-25% by volume of LaCrO.sub.3 is dispersed at the grain boundaries of Cr particles. It can be prepared by mixing 75-95% by volume of a Cr powder and 5-25% by volume of an LaCrO.sub.3 powder, together with a solvent and a binder, in a mill, molding the mixture into a predetermined shape after drying, and sintering the molded shape at approximately 1,500.degree. C. for 10 hours in an Ar atmosphere with 5 vol % of hydrogen to give an LaCrO.sub.3 -dispersed Cr alloy. The LaCrO.sub.3 -dispersed Cr alloy shows high electric conductivity by virtue of the growth inhibition of Cr particles during sintering and high chemical stability by virtue of the presence of the rare earth metal, La, meeting meet the requirements for the interconnection materials for solid oxide fuel cells.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1999Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Korea Institute of Energy ResearchInventors: Rak-Hyun Song, Dong-Ryul Shin, Kwangg-Sun Jeon, Yi-Sup Han, Dokiya Masayuki

Patent number: 6090227Abstract: Structural units which come into contact with glass melts and ceramic melts are exposed to strong corrosive attack. Molybdenum is a known material for glass melt electrodes but it is not usable for the majority of highly corrosive glass and ceramic melts. The use of a special molybdenum and/or tungsten alloy as the material for the structural unit reduces corrosion even in the case of contact with highly corrosive glass and ceramic melts.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1998Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Schwarzkopf Technologies Corp.Inventors: Gerhard Leichtfried, Hans-Peter Martinz, Joachim Disam

Patent number: 6090191Abstract: The invention relates to the field of producing the means for protecting the alloys on the nickel base against the influence of corrosive media, and more particularly concerns the metal-ceramic coatings used for protecting the flow parts of the turbines of turbopump liquid-propellant rocket engines (LRE). The composition for producing the metal-ceramic coating consists of nickel and of oxides of barium, boron, aluminum, cerium and zirconium at the following percentage of components by mass: nickel--36-58, barium oxide--16-19, boron oxide--7-13, aluminum oxide--6-9, cerium oxide--14-19, zirconium oxide--1-2. The coating is produced of a slip, that is applied to the pieces by dipping, spraying or flooding. The slip layers are dried in the flow of hot air. The coating is fired in a furnace in the inert gas medium, argon for example, at a temperature of 1000-1100.degree. C. during 0.5-1 hour.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1999Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Oktrytoe Aktsionernoe Obschestvo "Nauchno-Proizvodstvennoe Obiedinenie "Energomash" Imeni Akademika V.P.
