Sliding Jaw Face Patents (Class 81/179)
  • Patent number: 4873899
Abstract: An adjustable ratchet wrench (10) for turning a shaft (12) having a key (14). The ratchet wrench (10) includes a socket element (22) received within the head (18) of the wrench. The socket element (22) has an inner diameter (24) in which a key receiving slot (27) is formed. The socket element (22) is operatively connected to the head (18) by a ratchet mechanism (28). The inner diameter (24) of the socket element (22) is effectively modified by positioning a crescent block (38) within the inner diameter (24) of the socket element (22). The crescent block may take the form of a jaw (39) or a bushing (52). The jaw may include one or two jaws which are shifted radially by an adjustment screw (45) relative to the socket element (22). The bushing (52) includes a retention mechanism (56, 57) for securing it within the inner diameter (24) of the socket element (22).

  • Patent number: 4809570
Abstract: An adjustable box wrench comprising a box body, an elastic steel beam, and adjustment fragment and a box arm. The adjustment fragment is adjustable inside a hole in the box body to form various size hexagonal holes. Teeth on opposite side of the hole and a beam with a slot permit adjustment of the position of the fragment to adjust hole size.

  • Patent number: 4787277
Abstract: The headed end of a wrench body of elongated rectangular form includes a first stationary jaw defining a first gripping surface. A slide mount foot projects from the body opposite the stationary jaw, and is spaced therefrom. It includes a flat bearing surface. A slidable jaw shoe mounts on the foot, and is slidable towards and away from the wrench body headed end. The shoe has a bite portion forming a second gripping surface which extends parallel to the stationary jaw first gripping surface and faces the same. A straight wire spring has one end fixed within a V-shaped groove which diverges from the stationary jaw within the side of the wrench body towards the foot with the straight wire spring having a free end fitting with an oblique slot within a sliding jaw shoe, permitting the slidable jaw shoe to move in opposition to the bias to ratchet the wrench about a nut or bolt head captured between the first and second gripping surfaces when rotating the wrench body in a first direction.

  • Patent number: 4706528
Abstract: An adjustable wrench having a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw which is movable to adjust the gripping distance between the fixed jaw and the adjustable jaw, a sliding jaw portion which is provided as a gripping member on either of the fixed jaw or the adjustable jaw and serves as a wedge to decrease the gripping distance between both the jaws in its sliding in one direction, and a mechanism which automatically returns the sliding jaw portion to its original retracted position.

  • Patent number: 4637284
Abstract: A ratchet-action open-end wrench having jaw portions one of which is translationally movable on a handle end along an oblique path, between nut-gripping and nut-releasing positions. Biasing means urges the movable jaw portion toward its jaw-gripping position, wherein cooperable, separable interfitting means on said handle and jaw portion tend to resist shifting of the latter to the nut-releasing position. For such condition, the movable jaw portion is set, and the wrench is thus conditioned to drive the nut when the handle is swivelled forward. The movable jaw portion in addition to its main translational movement, can initially rock slightly to disengage the interfitting means, such rocking being effected by a backward movement of the handle whereby translational shifting of the jaw portion can occur to the nut-releasing position which then permits a bypass or ratchet action of the wrench to be had for obtaining a new, advancing grip on the nut.

  • Patent number: 4440047
Abstract: A wrench, formed as an open box wrench or to completely encircle a nut comprises a drive insert for at least two opposed nut faces. Each drive insert engages its respective nut face over the full length of the latter. A guideway for each drive insert has parallel sides arranged at an angle such that upon applying torque, the drive insert will not move into the recess, while on the reverse stroke the insert will easily move into the recess. The facing surfaces of the drive insert and the nut may be provided with a cooperating projection and recess.

  • Patent number: 4437364
Abstract: A nut wrench is constructed to function like a ratchet wrench by forming one of the two jaw members as a slideway which diverges from the gripping face of the other jaw member toward the front of the jaw, mounting on the slideway a slide member which has the second gripping face, and lightly spring-biasing the slide member rearwardly to a normal position. The parts are so proportioned that, when the wrench is engaged with a nut, reverse rotation of the wrench displaces the slide member forwardly until the span across the jaw members is sufficient to override the angles of the nut, after which the spring returns the slide member to its normal position.

  • Patent number: 4255990
Abstract: This hand-operated, flat, open end wrench simulates the action of a ratchet wrench by causing the corners of a bolt head or nut to function analogously to the teeth of a ratchet. A single moving part, spring-loaded against or in close proximity to the bolt head or nut tangentially, aids in jamming or gripping the bolt head or nut and permits gripping a hexagonal head or nut either by opposite flats or by opposite vertices, whereby rotation in 1/12-turn increments is possible.

  • Patent number: 4204440
Abstract: An open end one way torque wrench has a wrench head recess in which a pair of articulated jaw members is adapted to receive and apply torque to a multifaced element by turning the wrench in one direction, and the jaw members automatically release and move into engagement with the next succeeding faces of the element by swinging the wrench in the opposite direction. The wrench head has a substantially semicircular track on which one of the jaw members rides. The other jaw member rides a tangential extension of the track. The jaw assembly is normally biased toward a torquing shoulder from which the assembly retreats during the release and re-engagement action of the jaw assembly.
