  • Patent number: 4930825
Abstract: Plant uprooting apparatus having a pair of jaws movable relatively to one another between open and closed positions in response to movements by a person of an actuating grip and linkage. The movement in one direction of the grip is limited so that the force that must be exerted by the person to maintain the jaws in their closed position is minimal.

  • Patent number: 4730524
Abstract: A long nose locking hand tool having a pair of opposing jaw members, a fixed handle, a movable handle, and lever locking means therebetween for maintaining a toggle relationship between the jaws when in a closed position; wherein each of the jaw members comprises a jaw face having a total jaw length to average jaw height ratio of from about 6.5 to about 8.5 made of an alloy spring steel with a hardness range of from about 53 to about 57 Rockwell C, having a nominal parallel opening when they are spaced apart, approximately 3/16 inch, thereby enabling said jaw members to clamp a workpiece up to 3/16 inch thick.Furthermore, said fixed handle has an adjustment screw and a strike surface with an axis passing through said strike surface defining the direction of a line of force impartable to the hand tool; said pair of jaws further defining a bisecting axis formed by the angle of said jaws when closed against a workpiece, and the angle between said axes being less than 50.degree.

  • Patent number: 4726266
Abstract: In a pair of pliers where at least one of two shanks which carry jaws is built up of two spaced side-plates, is in at least one of the shanks a tapered section arranged rearwardly of a pivot point where the shank is attached to the other one. By the rearward location, which also allows a less steep taper, the tapered section is more spaced from the pivot point, whereby the danger of rupture upon heavy loading is diminished. Also the handles may be built up of spaced side-plates between which a stem portion of a protective grip with T-shaped cross-section is inserted.

  • Patent number: 4716899
Abstract: A tool for applying an identification tag body and a tag retainer to an ear of an animal. The tool includes a main handle member on which a tag body is mounted, a swinging bracket pivotally mounted on the main handle member, a second handle member pivotally connected to the swinging bracket, a first sliding link member pivotally connected to the second handle member, and a second sliding link member pivotally connected to the second handle member. The tag retainer is mounted on the swinging bracket. As the swinging bracket swings, the tag retainer can pass through the animal's ear and enter a boss of the tag body for locking therein. Support structure on each of the sliding link members can engage support pins mounted on the main handle member so that linkage of the tool can advance in two stages as the handles are advanced toward each other. The support structure of the sliding link members can come free of the associated support pins, one at a time.

  • Patent number: 4569260
Abstract: A pliers-type hand tool has a pair of pivotally connected jaw-forming members defining jaw portions on one side of the pivot connection and elongate slotted lever portions on the other side of the pivot connection. A slide pin is received in the lever portion slots and is connected by pivot links to operating handles which are attached to the pivot connection in common with the jaw-forming members. The arrangement produces a mechanical advantage between the handles and the jaw-forming members allowing a greater jaw-closing force to be developed, related to the manual effort applied to the handles, than with conventional pliers-type tools of comparable size.

  • Patent number: 4499797
Abstract: A wrench includes an upper jaw integral with a handle and a force multiplying cam member pivotally mounted on the handle. A lower jaw has a pivot point for pivoting relative to the cam member and the upper jaw. A sliding bar is mounted inside the handle to slide with respect thereto. A free end of a first toggle linkage member is pivotally connected to an ear of the lower jaw and a free end of a second toggle linkage member is pivotally connected to the sliding bar so that the pivot point can move relative to the handle. A tension spring extends between the ear and the lower jaw to urge it away from the upper jaw. An extension integral with the first toggle member forms a second handle coextensive with the first handle and cooperates therewith to move the jaws toward each other as the handles are squeezed together. Such movement continues until the jaws contact an associated object. Continued squeezing of the handles causes the second toggle member to move the sliding bar back from the upper jaw.

  • Patent number: 4407493
Abstract: Toggle clamps, such as used for factory fixtures, typically have clamping arms which in use extend over a workpiece or workpieces; to remove the workpieces and insert new ones, the clamping arms must be opened wide, typically through an angle greater than 90.degree.. In prior fixtures this is done by utilizing a conventional four-bar linkage; the fixed geometry of such linkages provides no tolerance for clamping workpieces of different thicknesses except by screw-adjustment of a clamping foot. The present toggle clamp adjusts itself to a wide range of thicknesses. One of its members has a hollow containing a sliding locking wedge mechanism pivot-connected to the toggle link member of the mechanism; before it assumes the angle for toggle action, the wedge mechanism is held from locking by a cam on this link member. The sides of the hollow member are slotted, the pivot pin extends through the slot so that, for wide angle opening, the link can pull on the pin.

  • Patent number: 4344215
Abstract: A tool for use by pipefitters in joining a length of pipe to a fitting in which one end of the pipe is accommodated with a predetermined spacing between the end of the pipe and an internal shoulder within the fitting. The tool comprises a pair of jaws which may be clamped on the pipe when the end of the latter abuts the shoulder and includes shims movable from a position spaced from the pipe toward the latter to occupy a position between the jaws and the adjacent free end of the fitting, thereby providing for a predetermined spacing between the free end of the pipe and the shoulder of the fitting. One of the clamping jaws is capable of substantial adjustment relative to the other to enable the tool to be used on pipes and fittings of considerably different size.
