  • Patent number: 6503021
Abstract: A method and apparatus for connecting underwater conduits and more specifically, to a method and apparatus which is capable of performing the diverless connection of underwater flowlines and connection of these flowlines to underwater structures such as flowline bases, xmas trees, and templates. The connection of underwater conduits is facilitated by the use of a remotely operated vehicle and connection apparatus both being launchable and recoverable by a support vessel. The connection apparatus adapted to mount on at least one of the underwater conduits and the connection apparatus allowing for docking of the remotely controlled vehicle which then captures and draws a second conduit to form a continuous flowline. Then a connection apparatus is clamped upon the conduits. The apparatus then bolts the conduits together.

  • Patent number: 6439807
Abstract: A method and apparatus for connecting two pieces of pipe having flanges when the pipe pieces are located deep under a water surface. A movable bolt wrench is provided which has a number of wrenches mounted in a frame corresponding to the bolt holes on the flanges of the pipe pieces. Bolts located in the bolt wrenches are aligned with the bolt holes of the flanges and inserted into the bolt holes. A nut wrench is also provided containing nuts which, when aligned, are threaded onto the ends of the bolts associated with the bolt wrench. After the bolt and nut connections are made, these bolts and nuts are tightened by the operation of the bolt and nut wrenches.

  • Patent number: 6345436
Abstract: A valve adjusting and injector preload tool is provided for an internal combustion engine having a valve opening member with a male threaded member operatively and adjustably contacting the valve. The tool includes a first member engagable with the threaded member for rotating the threaded member towards or away from the valve. There is a knob for rotating the first member in a first rotational direction so the male threaded member moves towards the valve and for rotating the first member in a second rotational direction so the male threaded member moves away from the valve. There is a clutch for stopping movement of the first member, as the male threaded member moves towards the valve, when the male threaded member operatively contacts the valve and takes up play between the valve opening member and the valve.

  • Patent number: 6334376
Abstract: A power tong system is used to make up and break out threaded pipe connections. Rotary power tongs are connected to an integral backup tong through an extendable hydraulic cylinder and rod. A brake is secured to the rotary tong to selectively hold the pipe stationary relative to the rotary tong. When rotation of the pipe by the rotary tong ceases, the brake is applied, and the cylinder and rod are actuated to angularly displace the power tongs and the backup tong to apply a torque force to the pipe connection disposed between the power tongs and the backup. A resulting torque force is obtained that is greater than the maximum torque that can be exerted by the rotary tong acting alone. The system may also be deployed to apply and hold precise torque forces on the pipe connections. When used to obtain a makeup torque below the maximum rated rotary tong output, the rotary tong is regulated to limit its torque output.

  • Patent number: 6286394
Abstract: Arrangement for changing the nut (11), the latter holding a roll ring, on a cantilever-mounted roll shaft (2) having a thread (13) for the nut (11), by means of a changeover apparatus. This has a threaded sleeve (50) which is provided with a thread (12a) that matches the thread (13) of the roll shaft (2) in order to take the nut (11). It has a centring device (49) for placement in alignment against the roll shaft (2). To ensure that the nut (11) can be screwed onto the roll shaft (2) from the threaded sleeve (50) even when the position of their threads does not match exactly, the threaded sleeve is moveable and inhibited against rotation in relation to the centring device (49) and/or in relation to the roll shaft (2).

  • Patent number: 6253644
Abstract: A torque wrench interfaces with a one or more fasteners intended to be tightened or loosened and includes a main housing with two or more preset torque devices which establishes a torque range insuring that the fasteners will not be tightened neither too tight nor too loose. A drive shaft protrudes from the main housing and rotatably drives a drive gear disposed in the main housing in which when rotated, drives the geared torque devices positioned on either side of the drive gear. A helical spring connects two torque pistons and adjustably applies a regulated torque to the driven torque piston in response to movement of the drive torque piston. The torque pistons are in a torque piston casing and are connected by irregular opposing surfaces urged together by the helical spring that allow for the torque pistons to rotate in relation to each other in one rotational direction only and allows the preset torque device to be enabled only when tightening a fastener in the clockwise direction.
