Patent number: 6915725Abstract: Described is a device that is useful for allowing an engraver, or the like, to have their workpiece rotated without the need to lift their tools from the work piece, and to eliminate hesitation or stopping in the course of engraving circles, spirals, curves, or convoluted shapes. The device is a workstation, such as used by engravers, welders and the like, that comprises a workbench upon which a turntable is mounted. The preferable turntable is mounted to the top of a rotatable post, which projects through the workbench by means of an extension piece. The post is in turn attached to the underside of the workbench and also to the floor (or base plate or other suitably rigid structure such as the workbench or stand) using flanged bearings. Attached to a portion of the post near the floor is a foot operated plate. The operated plate is located in a position such that it is conveniently accessible by a foot of the engraver.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2002Date of Patent: July 12, 2005Inventor: Bryan Bridges

Patent number: 6561062Abstract: A lathe having a bed is supported on two legs. In one embodiment, the bed is hollow and has with an inner portion into which a weight enhancing material may be inserted. The bed may include two tubular members separated by spacers. The tubular members may have cross-sections that increase stiffness. In another embodiment, the bed is attached to a support assembly that includes first and second hollow legs, which may also contain weight-enhancing ballast. The first leg may be attached to a first hollow foot and the second leg may be attached to a second hollow foot. A stabilizer bar may be inserted in each foot for increased stability. Pairs of wheel assemblies may be attached to the first and second feet. In yet another embodiment, the lathe includes a headstock having a housing slidable along the bed. The housing encloses a motor that drives a shaft having two spindle ends protruding from the housing.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2001Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Delta International Machinery Corp.Inventor: David Miller

Patent number: 6170368Abstract: A cutting insert which includes a holder that contains a pocket and a hard insert that has a rake surface. The hard insert is contained within the pocket so as to present a cutting edge. The cutting insert also includes a chipbreaker which comprises a plate with a bottom surface. The chipbreaker is attached to the cutting insert (or optionally to the holder) so that the plate is spaced above the rake surface of the hard insert a first distance forming a conduit for passage of the chips away from the cutting insert. The conduit is defined at least in part by the rake surface of the cutting insert and the bottom surface of the chipbreaker plate.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1999Date of Patent: January 9, 2001Assignee: Kennametal Inc.Inventors: Edward J. Patent number: 5597023Abstract: The present invention consists of a main frame that mounts atop a table saw. An axis shaft on a rocker assembly holds a wooden workpiece which is rotated and lowered into the circular cutting blade. Either a radius or square shoulder tenon can be cut depending on the orientation of the axis shaft.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1995Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Inventor: Michael G. Heintzeman

Patent number: 5203243Abstract: A truing lathe has its components mounted on a base. A pair of stands for holding the workpiece are mounted on the base. The stands have a pair of notches where the workpiece rests and is rotatable therein. An electric motor with a pulley head is mounted on one of the stands and below the notches so that the motor drive shaft aligns with the axis of rotation of the workpiece. One loop of a stretchable endless belt is slipped over the midsection of the workpiece while the other loop is stretched to fit around the drive pulley. The cutting bit is mounted on separate longitudinally and transversely moveable blocks so that the bit can be adjusted radially and longitudinally relative to the axis of rotation of the workpiece to machine the workpiece. The mounting stand and the way the workpiece is rotated results in minimal precession of the workpiece on the lathe to allow for a closer and truer machining of the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1990Date of Patent: April 20, 1993Inventor: Mike Walker

Patent number: 5117716Abstract: A dual template assembly for permitting rough and finish cuts to be made on successive passes of a tracer lathe includes separate rough and finish templates. A pneumatic cylinder selectively causes sliding movement of the rough template relative to the finish template. The rough template is initially moved to an extended position, wherein an edge thereof is exposed over an edge of the finish template. A lathe tracing stylus is moved across the rough template edge, causing the lathe to remove material from a workpiece in accordance with the rough shaped defined thereby. A sensor generates a signal when the tracing stylus completes its movement across the rough template. In response thereto, the control circuit causes the rough template to be moved to a retracted position, wherein the finish template edge is exposed over the rough template edge.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1989Date of Patent: June 2, 1992Inventor: Robert L. Patent number: 4899795Abstract: The device includes a bed plate which can be placed on the table of a table saw and held against the rip fence and onto the table top by a block clamped to the rip fence which allows the bed to be moved fore-and-aft upon the table top parallel to the saw balde. A live center and a dead center are provided to hold a work piece therebetween parallel to the saw blade. In one aspect of the invention the work piece can be indexed and engage the saw blade to cut three or more equidistant lengthwise facets thereon. In another aspect these facets can be tapered end to end or from the center to each end by shifting the tail stock towards the blade or by first shifting the tail stock and then the head stock. In a still further aspect, the head stock includes means to rotate the work piece by a source of power so that a tapered cylindrical shape may be cut or dowels may be formed.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1989Date of Patent: February 13, 1990Inventor: Larry Hackett
