  • Patent number: 4404723
Abstract: A band-removing apparatus for taking off a band wound about a paper sheet bundle. One end portion of a paper sheet bundle brought to a band-removing section by transport means is clamped in a vertical direction by a pair of clamping members, thereby causing the paper sheet bundle to be bent downward. Part of a band is stretched over the concave portion of the bent paper sheet bundle in the form of a chord. A hooking member catches said chord portion of the band. When the hooking member holding said chord portion of the band is rotated crosswise of the transport passage, then the band is pulled off from the paper sheet bundle. The removed band is let to fall into a receptacle disposed on one lateral side of the transport passage.

  • Patent number: 4399725
Abstract: A strip of plastic material is cut by clamping the strip and then moving a cutting blade from a retracted position to a first position in cutting engagement with the strip. Simultaneously a supporting blade in overlapping relation with the cutting blade is moved to the first position for lifting the strip. The movement of the supporting blade stops at the first position and the cutting blade movement is continued through the strip. The cutting surface of the cutting blade is recessed adjacent the cutting edge so that upon movement of the cutting blade the contact with the strip is minimized to prevent the formation of burrs on the severed ends of the strip. After the strip is severed the cutting blade is retracted to the first position. From the first position, the cutting blade and supporting blade are moved to a fully retracted position and the strip unclamped so that the severed portion of the strip can be removed and the remaining portion of the strip moved into position for the next cut.

  • Patent number: 4287749
Abstract: A sleeve having a tapered outer surface is shrink or interference fitted over the outer surface of a die blank in which is formed a central bore, a larger diameter bore and a transition bore therebetween. The diametrical interference between the sleeve and the die blank is effective in producing an elastic deformation of the smaller diameter bore causing it to assume a conical shape. The die blank and sleeve are restrained within a casing and the inner surface of the die is formed by electrical discharge machining, electrical chemical machining or by other known methods. The die casing and sleeve are removed from the die, allowing the release of the stored strain energy of deformation which causes the smaller bore of the die to assume a conical shape tapering radially outwardly from its inner extremity. The sharp corner that results at the innermost end of the smaller bore is removed by lapping a straight-sided tool through the central opening of the die.

  • Patent number: 4281546
Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting elastomeric material into volumetric elastomer samples is disclosed. These volumetric samples may be reproduced at identical mass for precision testing purposes. The volumetric samples are reproducible for such precision purposes by the use of a volumetric adjustment mechanism which determines the volume of the cavity into which elastomeric material is compressed before cutting. The apparatus also has a moving cutting mechanism with a contoured cutting area, which in combination with the volumetric adjustment apparatus, removes deleterious air bubbles and other deformities prior to cutting the elastomeric material. The volumetric adjustment apparatus is housed within a die apparatus, which has a damping mechanism to permit complete manipulation of the elastomer prior to cutting the elastomer into the volumetric plug. After the cutting of the plug has occurred, the ejection apparatus pushes the volumetric plug from the cavity whereupon another cycle is begun.

  • Patent number: 4063480
Abstract: Filter rod portions in the flutes of a rotating drum are severed by a rotary disk-shaped knife to yield shorter sections which are used for the making of filter cigarettes. During severing, the filter rod portions are flexed by stationary components to produce tensional stresses in those parts of filter rod portions which move into the range of the knife. This enables the knife to make a clean cut and to become immediately separated from the shorter sections. The stationary components may include annular members which urge the outer parts of successive filter rod portions against sloping portions of bottom surfaces of the respective flutes. If the depth of the flutes is constant, the components further include stationary cams which extend into circumferential grooves of the drum and lift the central parts of successive filter rod portions out of the adjacent portions of the flutes during travel past the knife.
